I just joined here and decided to move my build thread to this forum because of the knowledge the members here have and also the willingness to help with ideas. So before I begin I am a bodyman by trade and have an insane love for anything with four wheels. I could use some thoughts on my build because this is the first massive build I have attempted and any ideas would be appreciated.
So here is my Blazer. I bought it with the plans to throw a LT4 and six speed in it but keep it reliable and as a daily driver. Since then many years later and a few engines later I was convinced she was cursed so she sat in the driveway where the towtruck left her for about a year. I bought a TBSS during this year as my daily and couldn't be happier, but looking at my Blazer sitting there sad dirty and lonely I tried to sell her. I had someone very interested and at a very good price but realized I love my Blazer a little to much to let her go, so decided to just go all out. I want to learn major fabrication and plan someday to do it for a living and the Blazer seemed like a good start.
The day I bought her second owner and all stock except lowered a little.

First engine. I swapped the LT1 to obd2 and retained ac and all comforts in a daily. :)

This was the day before the last engine gave out. I had just put on my front big brakes too. :(

When I decided to keep the Blazer got it right in the shop and started the tear down and got a solid game plan on sectioning it four inches to bring the center of gravity down among other benefits.

Mocking up my cage. I am still trying to figure out how to run my door bars. I just got the seats I am going to use so after my front end is done I can start messing around with placement again.

Got the engine in and was getting body mounts made and was going to start on the floor but had a major plan change. Had a front end fall in my lap.

Cut the hump out of the frame for more head clearance

Seats I am going to run. Love how I fit in them and excited to get them mounted so I can get the cage and floor done.

And here is where I am at now. Putting 2002 Z06 front supension in it. Also considering putting the rear end in also but still debating that one. There is a lot of pictures in between these during progress so if interested I can put more up. This is a project I am hoping to have out and racing by spring 2020. Before I got the front suspension I was trying for 2019 but now now need to wide body it which is going to take time. But good thing is it will give me time to build a LS engine for it. Not going to try to run the lt's anymore.

Seems like a solid start to me. I think we need to swap knowledge as I know fabrication pretty well, but can't do body work at all.
I'm jealous of your vette suspension find. I personally would do the rear too since you're already in there and have to modify the body. Seat and cage look pretty serious. What type of events are you planning on running in?
And we love pictures around here so share away!

Honestly building just to build it. Have always wanted to build something from the ground up. I have done the serious racing for points in the past and now just want something to go screw around in. But mainly I really want to do some track days and hill climbs. Safety is my main concern after some wrecks in the past. When I wrecked my formula 500 it broke my shoulder and some other nasty bruises. Thank goodness for my new helmet and other safety equipment.
I love to share knowledge of what I know. I have trained many kids in the collision industry and now growing bored of it, so really want to start fabricating. I have an idea for my next build. I have two lt4's that need rebuild and a six speed transmission that I want to build a hotrod with next.

Another Blazer build, sweet! Welcome Jaymzz!
Will definitely be following along on your build.
I'm sticking with the gen2 engine platform, just to be a weirdo. I'll take one of those LT4's off your hands if you need to get rid of one. ;)

I thought about staying with the lt series engines but power to money is so drastically different between ls and lt.

I was looking around the internet trying to get ideas for building my shock towers and upper control arm mounts and came across this setup. Anyone heard of them?

I've come across them before. Can't say that I've ever seen anyone with their stuff. Looks like it's overbuilt with nice machining, but we know it's not all about looks.
It's spendy, but could save a good bit of fabrication time. I love that diff adapter too, but wow that's a chunk of change compared to my Mark VIII rear end!

I am liking it because I wouldn't have to widen my Blazer five inches per side if I used these parts. Plus it would make everything easily serviceable if ever needed.

I didn't even think about you not having to do flares with this kit. Good point. Although we both know it would look mean as hell with big flares all around.
I do also love the ease of service that allows. I'm actually kind of jealous of that fact since I'm having to custom fab all my mounts.

Wasn't aware of his current stuff but I vividly remember his ProStreet J2000 from 1986 and his compound blown Nova. Guess that just proves I'm old.
The tucked-in Vette suspension would be very cool but I'm really hoping you wide body it. Flares ftw.

Didn't have time to call him today but am tomorrow to see there options. I want to see if they just sell the upper control mounts or if I would have to use the whole kit.

I could use some opinions and thoughts. I have been thinking about my Blazer all week and decided to use front and rear C5 suspension and also the C5 running gear. Problem being is that when done there will be about four feet of original frame, so thinking it would be better to just make a whole new frame and that way I build the frame wider so it runs along my rockers for complete open access to the running gear. I would think it would be cleaner and also more room for everything. Thoughts? If I do this will probably fab it up at work so I can use the frame rack and measuring system to make it perfect. I wouldn't think it should take more than a weekend or two to make a new frame out of 2x4 metal.
Older picture but here is the stock frame location. I would think running 2x4 metal down the inside of both rockers with some cross braces would be good. Learning here so would love to hear anyone's thoughts.

Solid question...I've been battling this thought myself. I would say do it since you have access to everything you need to do it right. That corvette drive train is so different in how it mounts that you'll probably end up saving yourself a ton of time beginning with a blank slate. I don't have enough space myself to build a perfectly straight frame so I'm not going that far.

That's what I was thinking also. Only drawback is already have 3/4 cage welded in to frame. But I can figure something out there.

Absolutely YES on the frame widening.
If I had to do mine over again the frame would be kicked out to the rockers.
More stable platform and eliminate a bunch of stuffing 10 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound size hole.

I am getting ready to order a bunch of metal for a new frame. Not sure when I will be able to build it yet though because of Christmas around the corner and super busy at work. When I do get started will update with lots of pictures. Been working 6 days a week and a lot of hours so still need to get out in the shop and measure and draw up plans for the frame.

Well the good news is I went and picked up my tube bender today. Was very cool that they are semi local to me only hour and a half away. Excited to get my chassis started soon, but bad news is blew the transmission in my tbss today on the way home from getting my tube bender. So long story short using the money I have saved up for a transmission instead of tubing. :( But stay tuned will be posting progress when I get my daily back on the road and some more money saved up.
Bought the Rogue fab tube bender. I did get the needs welded kit because that just sounds fun. :D Also got a 1" square die for floor bracing or whatever else I can use it on. Thinking about making new hand rails around the house to learn how to use the bender. lol

Yes! Glad to see others jumping on this bender too. I'm jealous that I can't run down the street to meet them like you. I had them weld mine for me since it was easier (I'm lazy sometimes), but the diy kit does look fun. Now that I'm having to order additional dies I should have gotten that tradesman set. I also need to build a cart for mine. Did you get the notcher too?
Jaymzz
01-02-2019, 03:19 AM
Already have a notcher so didn't get there's. Excited to start playing with the bender but going to be a bit. Now my tbss is down doing the while I am there I should do this and then that. Ordering a built transmission with a stall and thinking about doing headers and a cam while I am there.

Still no new updates on the Blazer unless you want pictures of the dust on it. :(
Good news is I have all the new parts for my TBSS and the transmission will be here next week hopefully. Ended up getting a fairly built one for it so it lasts longer and can have more fun driving it. Bad news is my TBSS cost more than I was expecting so really put a hold on my Blazer. Going to try to get it back on the road in a weekend once my transmission gets here. Coming from southern Florida so worried about weather holding up shipping in middle America.

Not my s10 but my other Blazer. Can't wait to get it back on the road and stop driving my crew cab land yacht every day.
Getting ready to put in a transmission, stall, trans cooler, oil pickup tube, and headers. After taking this picture found some front diff parts that need replaced also. My tbss is starting to be a pretty good money pit but hopefully good after all this. Have a tune scheduled in a couple weeks also.

This is what nightmares are made of. I thought my s10 was compact and it has nothing on this Blazer. Shocked me that it is so tight that GM ran the front diff through the oil pan.

This is how you know you have a car problem...even the daily driver gets mods and broken from time to time. It's the best problem! Haha.

Right! I am curios to see how it drives with a good transmission. For the last year been babying it trying to get it to last until the spring. Didn't make it lol
They made them in rwd and awd. After yesterday I see why people convert them to rwd but need to keep mine awd.

I was looking for a Blue 2wd back in like 10, and the prices were still reasonable. I hadn't realized they came AWD until a couple years ago.

So My TBSS is hopefully done after today and now starting to save again for my s10 metal and parts. Have a tone of s10 and Corvette goodies to sell soon to hopefully get the Blazer in to go mode again.
Here is my tune from today from my TBSS and couldn't be happier especially for a daily driver. Sure missed my heated seats.

So talked with a friend that owns the wrecking yard I get a lot of stuff from today. I was telling him about my dilemma that I can't decide if I want to run a triangulated three link nine inch rear end with massive deep dish wheels on the rear or still save up and run the C5 rear end. He has seen every one of my builds over the years and wants to see something completely different from me this time. I am now the proud owner of a complete 2002 Zo6 rear end with the 6 speed transmission. It still needs pulled or I would have got some pictures. :D
Where does everyone get there 1 3/4 .120 wall DOM tubing from? I need a lot of it and the cheapest I found in my area is just under $10 a foot which puts me at around $1900 for tubing. :(
Sbeck09
03-02-2019, 04:49 PM
Sweet! I need a friend like that! Are you going to actually use the transaxle setup from the vette too?
Jaymzz
03-02-2019, 05:22 PM
Yes going to use it all and cut the torque tube down to length. That should put some more weight in the rear for better distribution. The selling point was first the price he offered it to me but that I will be able to run all factory parts so no more trying to find or make custom parts if something breaks. That was one of the major problems I had when I was trying to drive it as a daily was to many custom parts and stuff kept breaking and I kept improving to where it was starting to get expensive. Never did find the reason I was burning clutches up, but the whole setup was *******ized so bad to make the ZF six speed work in something it wasn't supposed to be in. lol I had it down to swapping a new clutch disc in about 35 minutes.

03-02-2019, 05:29 PM
Holy crap! Well I'm kinda jealous as my project would be sooooo balanced if the trans was in the rear, but Ford never made a vette competitor.
I'll be watching this closely. Get to work!

Would love to get to work but still need a lot of metal and some other parts to get started. My TBSS put me back a lot of money so it is going to take a few months to get everything to get back to work on the Blazer.

Trying to keep my build thread updated so you all don't think it has been abandoned. I was supposed to pick up the Z06 rear end last weekend but had a stomach bug that was harsh so hopefully picking it up this Saturday if I can. I have been trying to sell anything and everything I have laying around from my car projects to buy the tube chassis materials and parts needed to get started back on my Blazer.
Anyone know what a full black/grey Blazer interior would go for? lol It seems everyone else has different taste in parts as me so being a little difficult selling all my LT series engines and transmission. :(

Be patient. Its the one thing I struggle with, I sold plenty of bicycles online for was less than they are worth because I don't have any patience. Keep them advertisements updated and someone somewhere will grab the stuff.
And cut and grind something daily dont get focused on the things that are not happening, focus on the things that are.

After picking up my rear end last weekend I started looking into tube chassis vs building a 2x4 frame. I do think the frame would be quicker and easier but I am building this Blazer to learn the ins and outs of building tube chassis. A friend wants me to build him a cage for his drag Honda and we started talking about tube vs frame and first off tube would be completely bad ass, but it also would be a good challenge and help me learn more than 2x4. So I started looking into full RR tube setups and put the 2x4 out of my mind. In turn when I was doing some reading I am considering doing https://rick486.wixsite.com/dobbertinperformance again. He sells a kit for tube chassis and it would take all the guess work out of my suspension and make it completely bolt in and easier to maintenance. I am slowly learning about suspension and all the angels beyond just collision at work but it is starting to confuse me a little. Worried I would get it all welded in and be off just enough to handle horribly or pre mature wear on parts.
Jaymzz
04-06-2019, 04:37 PM
So I was cleaning the garage today and once I could see my whole Blazer again got sidetracked. lol
While waiting on funds for tube decided to start planning the bodywork I am going to need to do for everything to fit.
Started by putting my rear wheels on the front since they will be my new front wheels. They are 18x10 and right now have 275/35 18 tires on them but plan on running a 285 or 295 on the front. Then I decided to see how wide I am going to have to widen the fenders.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/32609720267_10b5977b2e_c-1.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/RFBkJk)
Wheels barely clear the brakes but they will work thankfully.

Now that is going to be wide! I am going to have to re arch the front and rear because I want it 2-3 inches lower.

Are you going to keep the irs the stock width? I had looked into the dobbertin setup at one point. To be honest after looking through your build I think that you can handle the the placement of the irs. As long as you get the cradle square the suspension geometry is already done. I built my truck for the sole purpose of autocross and some road course use. You can do it!
Jaymzz
04-11-2019, 01:34 PM
I plan on keeping stock c5 width and widen the body. Since I am waiting on money for tube going to start widening the front fenders this weekend. The Dobbertin parts will take most of the guess work out of my build. I did talk to him about narrowing the front about two inches but changed my mind so I can have extra Underhood space for future upgrades.

There was a very inspirational post I saw the other day on a forum I go to everyday. I have psoriatic arthritis and have some ok days and some very bad days. I call it a work yourself to death disease because while I am working and staying very active my body doesn't hurt as bad. The problem is when you work on cars at work for 12-14 hours a day it is hard to come home and do the same thing at night and weekends mentally. This post I read really lifted my spirits and got me thinking....ALOT I have been a little down lately because of the pain and also having spent all my extra money on my TBSS so couldn't buy what I wanted to for my s10. I am not the one to announce my health to people because I hate sympathy but that one comment on a thread just lifted my spirits big time. So from that I have a middle of the week update. :D
I put the front end together tonight to get an accurate measurement of how wide I need to go with the fenders. So after getting the front end together and getting the front suspension lined up where it will be the survey says I need to widen it 5 inches. The question is that I am thinking about bringing the front suspension forward a couple inches to gain a little more wheelbase. I am already cutting the fenders up to widen them so moving the wheel arch forward a little wont be much more work and also it won't be enough to make it look any different than a stock s10 length wise. In my head it is telling me that I will have a little better high speed stability but not entirely sure.

Just remember that the shorter wheelbase vehicles have an advantage on smaller, tighter courses. That being said, I don't think it's a bad idea to add a couple inches since this thing is so short already.
On the struggle with doing fun vs job projects..I've been there mentally, but without the legit pain you live with. It's why I got out of doing service work. I HATED working on my car after fixing other people junk all day. Now that it's on my terms, my projects are closer to therapy than a job. I always made sure to just take a fun drive to remind me why I wanted to work on my stuff. Your TBSS is a great example of what the reward is for your efforts.
Keep pushing. We all wanna see this happen! And I need more competition when I bring mine to your part of the country. ;)

Thanks dude. If my wife can get time off we are trying to go to Phoenix this summer to see if we can deal with the heat. Doctors say moving out of Oregon would be good for me joint wise. That's why I have that other thread asking about Arizona.
Out doing a major stretch job on my Blazer this weekend. Finally have it planned where to start cutting. :D

Started on my fenders today for the widebody. Also went and picked up the rear diff for the C5 running gear and that was spendy. :(
Also took off the rest of the mouldings and stainless this morning. I have been putting that off because I really worried about rust underneath the stainless. Great news is no rust at all!!!
It took a couple hours of thinking, measuring and a pot of coffee this morning but I finally got a game plan on how I want my widebody. (I thought)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/32660759117_8b09c59c57_c-1.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/RL7VNv)
Once I got it figured out it was time to get to work! I can now say anywhere you look in my shop there are notes about some part of my Blazer. lol
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/47550264742_fc3665d28d_c-1.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2frRx5J)
After cutting the fenders up I needed to brace them up and got to finally play with my new tube bender. (There are now notes starting in my new fab room on tube bender don't do's also) Glad I started learning on something hidden. They did turn out good though once I learned how to use the bender correctly. lol
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/32660763547_9ab0a5fe2b_c-1.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/RL7X7T)
Made the braces so they welded the whole length of the fender from the front core support mount to the rear upper and lower fender to a pillar bolts. I did put a bend in the middle incase I ever wreck so the fender will bend in the middle instead of turning into a pike headed my way.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/33726115058_346c352ea3_c-1.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Toga1o)
So now my dilemma. Originally I wanted to keep the bodyline that goes around the body and that's why I cut it the way I did. But after lowering it down to my desired ride height the widebody in the front needs to be a lot higher. As it sits in this picture the highest part of the Blazer is 56 inches and the lowest is 5 inches of ground clearance. Thinking about raising it back up to 7 inches so I can continue on with my original plans of a widebody. I thought maybe I could make a bulge for tire clearance in the front but then my ocd would kick in and I would have to do it on the back also which I don't like. Also the front suspension has been moved 1 3/4 forward for a little more wheelbase. Anymore than that would look out of place to me.

You should definitely try to keep the body line if possible. It needs to be there or the side of thew truck is just so plain.
When I was in high school a few guys shaved the body line and it just didn't look right.
I kinda have a pic in my head, but I think you'd need some donor fenders to do it.
I'll have to see if I can sketch it out so it makes sense.
While you have the fender off, can you take a couple pics of the firewall/lower A-pillar area? I'm starting to reconstruct mine
and can't remember exactly where stuff went.
Thanks!

I can't take off the fender until I get it welded back up. Right now have a bunch of temporary braces everywhere holding my fender skins, but as soon as I can I will get a picture for you.
After doing a bunch of reading this morning and looking at Dobbertin's website I raised the Blazer up to the "stock" Corvette ride height and it brought my Blazer up one inch and gave me plenty of clearance and can now keep the body line. I guess a little sleep sometimes helps. lol

Yeah, sometimes. lol
I appreciate it. IIRC there's a bracket on the bottom of the firewall, and I cut through it removing rust from the inside. Also, on
the replacement floor pans, the flange goes up, instead of down so I kinda want an idea how much to come past it.

Jay I cut my floor out already but in a week or two can get you pictures of whats left of the A pillars. Might be better to go junk yarding and if all of them are rotted out in your area I can run down to one here and get some pictures.
Worked on my fenders most of the day. It is taking some time though because I want them to have the same curves and lines as the body with a modern touch.
It took a long time to get to this point because wanted it to line up perfectly. I did some reading this morning on Dobbertin's website to determine the best ride height for my suspension and ended up lifting my Blazer an inch. That one inch corrected all my clearance issues I was having last night because I think I was way over thinking it.

Starting to fit all together!!! I welded up some of the top to get a visual and also to start measuring and planning the rest of the fenders and doors. So far this is going a lot smoother than the last wide body I did on a Subaru years ago. I have learned a lot and loving doing fab work in my shop again. I did learn today that the back of the s10 fender sticks out a little more that the front, so ended up tapering it a half an inch in the rear.

Did you cut the sectioned piece down? Seems like if you didn't then the flares would be flat or the body lines won't match.

Not sure if I am going to be able to go out in the shop tomorrow so here is what I got done today. Doing both fenders at the same time so progress feels slow but visually it is starting to transform. :D
So I plan for this to be under 3000 lbs and have a target of 2500 lbs. I have a couple people telling me instead of using 1 3/4 0.120 wall to use 1 3/4 0.095 instead. The 0.095 will save some money on tube but want to be safe. Can anyone chime in what would be best?
Wife wanted a selfie. I don't put my face on the internet much so here was a selfie at 5 am this morning for her. lol

Still a very long ways to go but the design of the front of the fenders has been bothering me all week. I did a ton of different designs this morning trying to figure out how I wanted them to look. My original plan was to have it curved in the front the same angle as the wheel lip but it didn't go with the body style once I had it all mocked up. I still have a lot of metal to weld in and then a lot of metal shaping before mud but it gives somewhat of a visual what it is going to look like. I know what it will look like when done in my head.

We built a roll bar for Sandhills Open Road Challenge. They require 1-3/4 X 0.090" wall DOM. Big Bend Open Road Challenge requires 1-3/4 X 0.120". This is for cars over 2700 pounds.
This is from SORC rules:
Under 1500 lbs. ERW, CREW 1.50” O.D. X .120 wall or DOM 1.50” O.D. X .090 wall
1500 to 2700 lbs. ERW, CREW 1.75” O.D. X .120 wall or DOM 1.50” O.D. X .090 wall
2700 lbs. & over ERW, CREW 1.75” O.D. X .120 wall or DOM 1.75” O.D. X .090 wall
SCCA General Competition rules are similar to SORC.
If I would feel safe with 1-3/4" X 0.095" as long as it is DOM tubing, not cold rolled and welded. We never tested our roll bar. I don't plan on it. But based on the various sanctioning body rules, we were compliant, which I would consider safe.

This really is a cool project, I've thought often about a really wide body S10 project but haven't had the guts to chop one up.
Considering my background in drag racing I used 1 3/4 .120 wall DOM on Pumkinator, mostly because smaller dia. tubing looked too small visually, but I'm a designer sort and visuals are as important as engineering to me. Looking back I didn't consider the extra weight though. With some chassis bracing and a boxed frame, although the engine bay was stripped of any extras, the car still weighed 3550 while a complete factory stock wagon usually weighs around 3400 ish. Smaller tubing would've dropped some weight.
My son and I are both building S10s now to go along with our G-bodies, his is a pickup and mine a Blazer getting converted to a Jimmy look. We've found that decent S10 info is hard to find on the internet or often tough to feel the resources are reliable but I've seen a couple seemingly reliable resources say a typical V8 S10 weighs in around 3100 ish. Since you have such a light weight goal in mind why not use the many race groups legal smaller tube chromoly to have the strength and lighter weight?
Lemme know if you decide to shop around for a rendering to see the design on paper over just in your head, I'd love to give you a bid sometime.
Here's a couple pics of our projects for inspiration-

Thank you. I think 120 wall would be heavier and a little more expensive but then wouldn't have to worry about bending any rules in case it is heavier than planned. I did think about chromoly but still learning and want to start on something a little easier first. It was a little tough cutting up a rust free 2wd 2 door Blazer at first and have gotten a little slack about it but I already had it and I like to work with what I have, that and also have a very strong addiction to Blazers especially s10's. lol
Nice renderings! I have thought about having one drawn up for me but kind of like the surprises I will add as times go on. If there was a rendering I feel I would have to build it to match. lol

Ordered my Corvette suspension adapters yesterday from Dobbertin! Very excited to get them in a week or two because that is one step closer to starting on my chassis.
Today worked on the fenders some more. After a bunch of measuring I either need to move my door hinges out or buy some aftermarket hinges so I have the correct door to fender clearance when opening the door. I knew I was going to have to do something but kind of been putting it off and working on the front of the fender all the while sneaking peaks at the back trying to get ideas. After posting this I am going to start looking into hotrod hinges and either get an idea or order them. Years ago I started working at night and weekends at a custom hotrod shop to learn fabrication and get out of the collision industry. I was there about three weeks and couldn't go in one night because other plans. The next day showed up to go to work about five in the afternoon and a bunch of cops were there. The guy teaching me that I had know for a couple years got shot and killed while working and the owner of the shop also was shot and killed. Ended up being the wife of the owners boyfriend and my friend was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were shot when I was supposed to be there the night before. Ever since then been kind of shy of going into hotrod shops and learning from them. I am learning as I go, so if anyone see's something that could be done easier or better please let me know.
Here is what I did today. Still a lot of work to go but the shape is coming together! Where that circle is I am thinking about putting a three inch tube there for brake cooling. Thoughts? I was thinking the air would be coming off of the filler and that would be a good location. But not sure....

So didn't have a bunch of time to work on the Blazer today, but do think I figured out a new door hinge idea. I looked into hotrod hinges last night and would rather spend $450 on tube or something else needed. After doing some house chores I started looking at a K5 Blazer I have for parts and decided to use the hinges from it and extend my A pillar out about six inches. This will give me bolt on hinges and be free just some time.
While you have the fender off, can you take a couple pics of the firewall/lower A-pillar area? I'm starting to reconstruct mine
and can't remember exactly where stuff went.
Thanks!

Wow, crazy story!
Suicide hinges would keep the door away from hitting the fender. ;)
Food for thought- design wise you don't want to butt a circle up against hard lines like that, it makes a funky transition the eye/ brain subconsiously has a hard time looking at and interpreting and tends to not visually flow so well. Even moving it 1/2" back and upward would give it better visual dynamics. Better yet, since the S10 naturally has hard blocky lines, why not do a scoop that plays off those body lines and internally transitions from square-ish opening to the round ducting?
Here's a visual of something like that to get your thought gears turning....

Not getting any actual work done this weekend. Was supposed to help a friend move so didn't bring any tools home to work on the Blazer. He has the stomach flu and in turn I got my old laptop out and started learning Bend-tech and trying to figure out how to design my chassis on it. They say it is easy to learn! I beg do differ!!! After about 9 hours of messing with it and realizing that I have to start over is frustrating but I will get it. Could have had most if not all of it drawn up on paper by now but trying to get into modern times. So hopefully sometime in the near future I will have some plans for my chassis in the digital age hopefully. If not paper it will be and a lot of cardboard or conduit.

Been a week! My health took a very bad turn for the worse this week or rather has been but caught up with me this week. :( Seems my spine doesn't like me anymore from my arthritis and is collapsing. Over the last eight years I have lost six inches in height and now at an even six foot tall. Was wondering why I wasn't hitting my head on stuff as much. lol So the company I work for is looking for a different position for me and will either end up in training or repair support and loose way over half my pay but gets me off the floor banging on cars. I am very sad about this because my passion in life is cars. My Blazer financially is going to slow down but do plan on working on it when I can with what I have and it will get done.
From my health declining I have decided to build a 2x4 1/8 wall frame at work before I am transferred. Going to order the metal next week and plan on in the next few weeks having my Blazer a roller again. :D
I got my Dobbertin adapters Tuesday and have been excited to bolt the front together to see if my math was correct on the width of the fenders. It was!!!

Thanks for the pics. I got the parts together, but they don't fit quite right. I put new door bushings in (after I welded everything up  ) and the front part (that you took the pic of) seems to tilt out, or the rocker panel sticks out about a quarter inch at the front of the door. Now, the thing is that the door that's on it seems to have been tweaked at some point, so I don't know if that has something to do with it. When things slow down at work a little, I plan to swap one of my other doors on and see if it fits better. If not, I think I'll have to cut a "v" shape in it to push the rocker in at the front. It's right up against the body mount, so it can't go in anymore. I'll get it tho.
Sorry to hear about your health. My gf's dad is one of those "work through the pain" guys, and worked for GM for 30+ years, 84 hrs a week. When he finally retired, he needed knee replacement, shoulder replacement and his spine had also compressed and he had nerve problems because of it. And he "only" lost about 2" of height. It's cool that your company is willing to work with you to find you a position. Not all would.
Hope things work out, and enjoying the build!

Here is what I got done this weekend. I did learn a lot about hinge locations and still need to do the other side and then a huge amount of sheetmetal work.
My first attempt and was so proud of it until this morning when I checked the door clearance to the fender and realized I was way off. Part of learning and won't do that again. lol

Moved the hinges forward about 4 inches and now everything clears and reinforced the hell out of the door and pillar. Plan is to sheetmetal the A pillar and that will lock everything in for strength and longevity hopefully.

Sorry to hear about the health issues. I've been fighting psoriatic arthritis for about 10 years now and found that a healthy lifestyle helps a lot with pain management. For starters I've noticed that dairy, heavy starches like white potatoes, and many normal cooking oils make my joints swell and hurt. So does sugar and a lot of processed foods. So, pretty much anything that tastes good makes my body freak out, lol. The Doc has me on a Mediterranean diet, which really isn't that bad. My wife keeps telling me I'll get used to it... Anyways, healthy living and positive thinking really helps deal with ailments and pain management. Good luck with your future and your career change.

Good luck with everything. We moved at the beginning of April and it really sucked, but that included having to move out on short notice because the Landlord sold the place and putting all our stuff in storage and living in a motel for a week while waiting for the new place to open up. Once we got moved and are somewhat settled it's been nice, the new place is bigger suiting our family of 7 better and is in a better location. The good thing about moving is it's an opportunity to learn new things and move forward in life.
Better yet might be a decent new job in the same place. I'd love to teach design classes and almost got on board as a part time professor in a small local college but in the end it fell through because although I have two Bachelor's degrees I don't have a Master's degree. Hope you have better luck if that's the path you choose, teaching others and passing on the skills keeps the industry alive and I think is very satisfying.

I bought the metal for the frame this morning and started to draw plans for it and ran into a huge oh crap moment. According to Dobbertin's plans for the adapters I need to have the frame come up 12.5 inches for the front and rear suspension and don't have the room length wise in the front mounting points to have the rails come down into the main torquebox. Everything I try leaves me no room for pedals and I even put the seat all the way back into the B pillar and felt way awkward and wouldn't be able to see out the side and still legs were all bet up. I could use any help with ideas here. I also thought about stretching the front end to make more room but think that would look odd also. If I can't figure out something I might just start building my 78 K5 with my suspension and scrap the s10. I would rather build the s10 though. :(

Can you post some more pictures or a diagram as to why it needs to be that high up, or a semi finish picture of how it is assembled?

Do the angle parts from the sub-frame you are installing have to be installed straight line down to the blazer frame? Would it be possible to weld a tube going from the right to left sides of the truck that attach to the subframe and then the angle part come down off to the sides?

I was thinking something similar. I stepped back and re thought a lot today and been researching different styles of frames from what I was originally planning. Ultimately I decided to start in the back and work my way forward. Thinking once I get all the vette stuff bolted together with a good visual should be able to come up with a good gameplan. I am trying to sit as low as can but thinking by moving the floor up a few inches I can gain a lot of foot room for pedals. If I could figure out how to post pictures from Flickr from my phone I would show you what I mean.

Best I can see looking at pic on last page of adapters near your cut out firewall, it looks like 2 x 4 frame rail would be right where pedals should be . So wonder how Rick D. got the front to fit on his examples. Don't see any front end details on any of his s-10 stuff.
Some projects involve fudging a little here & there. I have seen wheel openings moved forwards about 3" on small trucks without extending entire front, but that would make the front of the widebody part more difficult. Would be a positive on weight distribution though , so could be a consideration?
Could drop portion of frame behind adapter possibly be a reinforced 2 x 3" for 1" more room? Could you do a straight 90 degree drop down to under cab tube?
Maybe move only the floor portion in front of the seat higher?
Just trying to help you think.

I see what your dilemma is now, that puts the engine almost right where your seats should be. I thought it was just going to be the frame work that was going to be in the way.
Jaymzz
07-09-2019, 04:23 PM
Engine will sit forward and I should have enough room on that end, but the frame rails are in my way. I have some ideas for work around's for the frames but need to get the back done first. I am thinking I might be able to stretch the front end a little and then won't need to cut the torque tube down and also have more foot room for pedals. Still up in the air though...

Sorry to say that this is on hold until I buy another house and figure out my finances. My wife decided she is tired of being married to me after 22 years and we are getting divorced. This came out of the blue and was a complete surprise for me and not taking it to well. I don't understand how someone can be so nice and my best friend one day and then wake up the next day and say she is done with me. That literally is what happened.
Since some of you are watching my build thought I would let you know I have no way to work on it right now. Been cleaning the house and shop getting it ready to sell. I am looking at storage units to put my Blazer and shop stuff in for a while.

Sorry I haven't posted anything for a while. Life has been rather tough for me lately but starting to get better. My Blazer is under a huge pile of home remodel stuff right now so haven't been able to work on it, but the good news is that I am keeping my house so once the dust settles from my divorce I can work uninterrupted on my Blazer.
I did buy myself a divorce present though and have wanted another one since 1994. I have been fixing little stuff on the truck here and there but overall it is a great truck and so excited to finally have a good tow rig.

I bought the rest of my 2x4 metal to finish the frame this morning along with ordering a bunch of 1.75 DOM tubing so I can also start on my cage again. Now that things are getting better in life for me it is time to start working on my Blazer when I have a chance.
But I have ran in to an issue and need some input. I ran down to the junkyard and picked up a shifter so I could figure out a good seat location. I don't mind the seat sitting back where it is but trying to figure out if I want my legs straight out in front of me like my formula cars were or should they be bent some. Bent would make my life a lot easier for making the front frame rails but I also want comfort and what would be best. I have enough room for either or and that's why I am asking. Thanks in advance!

This is an interesting question. Personally, I'd vote for slightly bent. Just feels more natural to me. At the same time, it probably matters more on how long you plan to drive in a given outing. Try to mimic the seating position of a car that feels comfy to you on a longer drive.
Jaymzz
12-03-2019, 06:06 PM
I can agree with you but with my formula cars sometimes I sat in them for hours at the races and was comfortable. But like most other cars you sit in them with bent knees and they are comfortable also. That is what has me conflicted.
Jaymzz
12-06-2019, 08:46 AM
The problem solved itself and going to have bent knees so if anyone else wants to drive it they will be able to reach the pedals. I just got some engine mounts yesterday and after getting them all in this morning I am going to have to stretch the front end about four inches and thinking about moving the rear wheel arch back about an inch. The whole idea on this build was to have all factory bolt in parts just encase I ever need to replace anything. I have had a tough time finding someone locally to shorten the torque tube so might as well work with what I have. Overall it will give me some more high speed stability with the added wheelbase anyways so no complaints.
Here is after everything is bolted together. needed a visual.

I tried to make my front down bars yesterday and wasted a little more tube so decided to order some more angle finders from Rogue fab. I also ordered a couple more blocks to make it easier to bend easier. Learning as I go but it is really great to learn something new and can't wait to master making roll cages. Problem I have is there isn't anyone local that makes cages so can't go ask questions and learn from a pro.

The company I worked for years was called Kadel's then bought out by Abra and now Caliber. Caliber is a horrible company to work for IMO. I am now starting for Gerber hopefully next Wednesday as long as this virus crap doesn't shut them down also.
I got in the trade to do custom bodywork but found out really quick that it doesn't pay the bills so stuck with collision. I absolutely love taking something normal looking and put my vision to it for something unique and that's why I am excited to start on the body again. :)

Since widebodies are hot right now, I've seen a lot of people trying a lot of different things. Some work, some don't.
Then I had an idea...I wonder about using Envoy front fenders as a base. Seems like a quick and easy way to get a uniform
shape and make sure the top doesn't have a bunch of funky angles. It seems like the tops of the "flare" is where most people go wrong.
Can't wait to see how these turn out.

I have a 91 Sonoma that I've been drawing up wide body designs for and surprisingly this is the only wide body mod for a S10/blazer/sonoma i have found that is as exaggerated as what I am going for, and it has definitely reinforced my desire to go with a wide body. Its looking great, and i cant wait to see your progress.

Thank you!
So quick update. I started my new job last week and it is really slow so they told me to bring in my Blazer to have something to do in between jobs coming in. I have been working on it a little here and there but not much worth pictures but did realize something today. I now have all my good tools and a spot welder I can use if needed!
Got some odd looks towing it to work lol

And the Blazer's new home for a while. :)

"I don't always listen to my music loud, but when I do, so do my co-workers." lol
Good deal. One of the best jobs I ever had was as a detailer at a body shop. When I used to go to weekly car meets, they'd let me stay late by myself to wash my car before I went. Even tho I'd only been there like a week. lol

Been getting a lot of little stuff done on the Blazer the last couple of weeks. I am learning as I go and it seems to be taking a lot longer than I would like making parts but it is fun.
I started on the rear sheet metal and have the rear quarter panels almost done but need to get the inner metal done before I finish them up.

Needed a break from sheet metal so started back on the cage and chassis. I have a few more bars to add in and finish the front frame horns but the chassis and cage are almost done. :)

Just realized I have not updated my thread. Work is starting to pick up again so only been able to work on the Blazer here and there but that's a good thing!
Low and wide! Not anytime soon but trying to figure out something for the back besides the usual rollpan.

Cage is almost done and starting on the floor supports. I do have a few more bars to add to the cage still but getting close to done!

People are still having their cars fixed. Definitely slow but some money in the bank is better than none. :)

For sure. Everything is so weird right now. Apparently the post office is close to insolvency because they said people weren't sending as many packages, but since everyone is supposed to be staying home it would seem like they'd be buying online and shipping stuff. I have been. And I've had packages getting backed up or misplaced for like a week.

Sorry it has been so long for an update. Work has picked up some and now that I am done remodeling my bedroom I can start working on the Blazer more hopefully.
Front hoop done. Goal is to be able to drop all the running gear out of the bottom for easier maintenance.

Back is almost done. Excited on how it is turning out.

Taking a break from chassis and starting on the rear sheetmetal. I did get the gussets welded in and the rear end completely bolted in a couple weeks ago. :)

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, life has been a little rough again....
I have done a few little things to my Blazer the last month but nothing worth pictures. I have been trying to keep on it a little here and there but it has been tough. I learned today I am being layed off at the end of the week and that's a good thing because I haven't made a paycheck in almost three months. So here she is on the trailer again on her way home and boy did I get some funny looks on the way home. lol My shop is full of work stuff and no room to work but hoping to get it sorted out and start working on it again by next week in between looking for a job.

Been a while since I have been here. The Blazer is sitting in the shop waiting on a rendering of what it's going to look like before I continue. Due to the local forest fires I have a friends project in my shop so absolutely no room to work until he finds somewhere to put his car and that might be a while because his car and some clothes are all he has left. :(
But that doesn't mean I haven't been busy! I have been back at work for a few weeks now and it is beautiful! Besides work Here are a couple Blazers I picked up. (Yes I have an addiction!) lol
1998 2wd Blazer. It is super clean and getting ready to throw all my old suspension and big brakes on it from my 89. I picked up a LQ9 for it and a couple hair dryers now trying to figure out if I want to run a six speed or turbo 400 but leaning towards the 400 for the drag strip. :)

And a 1993 GMC Typhoon! I have wanted another one since 1993 after I rolled my last one being a stupid kid. This one has 71,000 miles on it and super clean and even still has the owners manual and back cargo net. I am try to resist the mod bug and leave this one mostly stock with some wheels, better brakes and maybe coilovers in the next couple years. :D:D:D
When I went to look at it and buy it.

Picked it up yesterday and couldn't get a good picture because of all the smoke and ash.

I'm jelly. I've wanted one of those for years. Someday.
Another jealous one here haha. Been a huge fan of Sy/Ty since they came off the assembly line.
That 2dr 2wd Blazer is nice too, always liked them too and you don't see them very often if ever. I like your plans for it.
Be safe out there.

Sorry for not replying to this sooner. The Blazer died because of a nasty divorce unfortunately.
Here are two of my own projects but I am moving so progress has grinded to a stop getting my house ready to sell.
My tow truck
https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/138822-1932-Ford-model-bb-tow-rig-for-pro-touring-cars
And the chassis from the Blazer being re purposed into a pro touring hotrod. But as my skills expand from collision to fab work and I get more equipment I am thinking of changing the body a little. Need a new shop first though because it is the background as I am finishing a couple customers cars before I move also.

I have so many questions. I am doing a similar build with an 85 s10 Blazer. I have 94 Corvette Lt1 with the ZFR manual. I just have some stuff i need to know if youd be willing to answer some questions
