View Full Version : 89 Mustang "Box Wine"

Here is my 89 Mustang, originally purchased new and AutoX'd by a good friend of mine through the early to mid 90's. I bought it in 2004, sold it in 2007 when in the Navy and just got it back in April of this year after flying out to coastal Georgia and driving it back to Texas. It's currently my daily driver but will semi-steadily get upgrades and repairs until my 66 is completed and I can focus on this one more. The plan is for a clean Saleen-ish clone that I can rip some cones with.

Since Ive gotten the car back I've focused on making it more reliable and comfortable to drive. I've replaced the carpet front and rear, put my Corbeau LG1's in it from my 66, built a custom catted X-pipe, new tint, rebuilt the complete AC system, LS Camaro fans, 6g alternator, cleaned up some wiring, and a few small things here and there.

The car has authentic Saleen wheels on the front and slightly wider 16x8 ARE wheels on the back, BAER 12" 4 wheel disks, subframe connectors, 3.55 gears, full tubular K member/A-arms, coil-overs, old school Herb Adams MASSIVE sway bars. The engine has some home-ported stock heads, B-303 cam, 1.73 Crane Cobra rocker arms, long tubes and various other bolt on.

I've started piecing together the Saleen ground effects and have them stashed for when it's time to paint it.

Heck yeah! I miss my black fox every now and then. I'm putting my notch back together right now so this is more motivation for me too!

I threw some cheap tubular lowers on Box Wine ($25 used), plans are in the works for a home made pan hard and torque arm. Also picked up some used Maximum Motorsports forward offset front control arms with delrin bushings. I'm going to put a stock K member back in it since the tubular one I have is for drag racing purposes. Also, I'll be putting a set of 10" 325lb coil-over springs in the front to replace the 12" 200's.

Also, I had to repair the cowl and hood from a fly up years ago, while doing that I decided to cut out the "gills" on the top of the hood. I've also been battling poor performance and random high idle. I threw a fresh set of upper intake gaskets at it and rerouted some vacuum lines after pulling the Nitrous kit off.

This is looking awesome! What K member is it? I ask because I have an AJE on my car. Ive run it pretty hard on rough surfaces with 315s in front with no issue yet. Seems like a lot of work to put the stock one back in for what seems like a step backwards?

Its an old "Ground Pounder" K, people say they're pretty weak and junky, I don't know. I may fabricate some bracing and run it still.

The Ground Pounder line was a Griggs copy. I believe it was revised a few times though.

I picked up some 2nd hand Schroth harnesses for the driver’s seat this weekend.

If you find out the areas that were weak maybe you can update just those areas and save a couple bucks? I have a soft spot for Fox bodies.

I got the A arms installed this past weekend. Being forward offset (3/4") I knew going that it might require some trimming of the fenders or even just a pulling but I believe my K has a built in fwd offset because it shifted the wheels forward pretty far. After lots of up down up down, mount the wheel remove the wheel, cycle the steering, puke power steering all over the fender and floor I was able to trim the fenders out to where it clears. Luckily the Saleen chin spoiler hides everything pretty well as I only took 1/2" off of it. I did order an MM bumpsteer kit, MM solid rack bushings, Hypercoil 10" 350lb springs (currently have like 12-14" 175-200lb "street" springs), and a couple interior/exterior trim pieces so those will be going on this weekend then it gets an alignment.
