I'm really surprised to hear that some of you guys had not seen Gumball Rally and also that many don't already own it on VHS (I don't know if it's on DVD yet), so I put together a list...

Must have car movies:
The Gumball Rally
Cannonball Run
Gone in 60 Seconds (original and new one)
American Graffiti
More American Graffiti (part 2)
Hollywood Knights
Two Lane Blacktop
All the Mad Max movies
Greased Lightning

Ones I still want:
Bullit
Le Mans
King of the Mountain (can't find this anywhere)
Smokey & the Bandit (the original)
Hooper
I'm sure there's more...

Tony~

Oh man you can't find King of the Mountain, Tony did you check Hemmings???
I love Hard Driver I remember see that one when I was a kid, Nice hydraulic ram!!

"Lawarance, Lawarance of Arabia he came to fight the Turkish"

Does anybody remember a movie where a bunch of punks were harassing a family, they drove hot rods, I remember one was a yellow 55 Chevy, might have a wagon, the guy punches the headlight out of the chevy I think I saw this movie almost 30 years ago, so I was about 7/8 , movies are cool

Your crazy, My favirote movie is Days of Thunder. It has some good stock car action. And I love that kind of racing where they can beat and bang each other and not get a lecture from NASCAR.

Am I :screwy:

"Go high . . . Cole ALWAYS goes high!!" HAH!! Days of Thunder was the NASCAR version of Top Gun but at least Tom Cruise didn't have to wear that chicken suit like Burt Reynolds did in Stroker Ace. Now THAT'S a classic.

The book, Stroker Ace, is a great read, much better than the movie, but very hard to find. Allegedly, it's true stuff from all types of racing with the books title being the main "character." And Bullitt was on last weekend. Dave and I counted hubcaps in the chase scenes but didn't see five as has been reported.

The original Gone in 60 Seconds had some very hokey acting (Parnelli's a much better driver than actor) but the Eleanor chase is the best ever for car movies. I grew up in the area where the filming was done and recognized lots of the scenes. The Moran Cadillac dealership scene went a bit awry as Halicki "involved" a few more cars than the single car that was planned and budgeted for. I guess the shock and expression on the Service Manager's face was real . . .

Two more . . . Death Race 2000 and The Great Race (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood). One movie is good; the other is not.

Not really the cars as the action of them in "RACE WITH THE DEVIL". I think it still holds the record for most flips (rolls) by a single car.

Andrew The car stuff in days of thunder was good but the rest of the tom cruise nonsense killed it for me.Some of the scenes the cars looked like they were doing about fifty mph, kind of hokey.

Sorry to bust on your movie, I actually went to see it in the theater!

By myself!

I think Mad max is awesome and i know a lot of people hated it.

Ronin has great car chases.

And, how about Blues Brothers 2000 for some interesting parallel parking and cop car crashes :)

Ronin- yes great car chases

I can't believe that noboby hasn't said "Rondeveouz" (SP?) yet!

It's only about 12 minutes in length and its a video of a 250 GTO bombing through the streets of Paris on a Sunday morning. Just engine noise, tires squealing and high speeds (well over 100). It's rumored that a F1 driver was doing the driving. So cool. So very cool. It's something you can watch about a dozen times in a row with the surround sound turned up to full volume!

Might as well include The Wraith, nice headlights on I think Sherlyn Fenn. And "The Car", which I feel was Chrysler's inspiration for the 300C....Love that movie

Although the actual movie was lacking, the end credits in "Starsky & Hutch" are great. They throw the Torino around all over the place. You even get to see a stunt man screw up when he tries a high speed "Rockford" and whacks the front clip of the car off. You get to see the reaction of the stuntman after he wrecks the car. As Homer would say........."Doh!!!!!!!"

Other cool car/chase movies:

To Live & Die in L.A. (great Impala carnage)
Magnum Force (Dirty Harry - 72 LTD driven to death)
The Transporter (The bridge jump was a little far fetched, but the rest is quite good)
King of the Mountain (The final race between Hamlin and Hopper was awesome)
Gumball Ralley (The scene where the Ferrari & Cobra come out of the water way and accelerate across the over pass, major power)
Original Gone in 60 Seconds (The opening scene where Haliki is doing like 130 MPH in a swaying 72 Cadillac is scary)
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (The jump over the draw bridge in the Caprice......he just barely misses the people and cars on the other side)
Above the Law (another Impala beat down)
Terminator 3 (pretty good agressive driving with the cop cars and Tundra)

I think "Hot Rods to Hell" was a movie made in the 60's the punks were harassing the family driving down the road, they were driving roadster's and I think it was in black and white, this was in the 70's maybe the same title, Dirk, did you see it??

No one mentioned the original "Blues Brothers" unless I missed it in previous posts. Way fun movie and I guess you can use "We're on a mission from GOD" as your defense in court. The chase thru the shopping mall was a 10!!

And what about "Christine." I know it didn't have chase scenes but it rocked on the scare meter. And "Duel" started using cars to give us nightmares back in 1972 if I remember correctly. If you haven't seen "Duel", locate the VHS and watch it.

Steve , I dont think I saw that one (!)

The driver in rondosvous (sic) is said to be f1 driver jacques laffite.

Live and die in la is great 'cuz of the guy whimpering in the back seat. And the guy going the wrong way on the freeway yelling "get out of the way!"

Was Lelouch really arrested when it was first shown?
Who drove the car?
Was it Lelouch or a hired Formula One driver?
What was the car?
Was it really a Ferrari 275 GTB?
How did he do it?
A composite version of the rumours/myths (garnered verbally and from the web) would read something like this;

Lelouch had made enough money from his classic “Un Homme et une Femme” to buy himself a Ferrari, which he proceeded to drive with “enthusiasm” in his native Paris.

Whilst shooting another film, a new bit of equipment was being used – a gyro stabilised camera mount. Lelouch then came up with the idea for “C’était un Rendezvous”. The camera used only had a ten minute film magazine – hence the mad dash to the steps of the Basilique du Sacre Couér in Montmatre.

On first showing, Lelouch was supposedly arrested. In his defence, he proclaimed he had taken all possible precautions. This included convincing a Formula One driver to helm the car (he refused to name him).

Subsequently the film went underground - occasionally shown in front of a Lelouch full-length feature on theatrical release. Outside of this, only poor quality pirate copies on VHS or a badly worn print were available. These would be played at car club meetings and slowly the film attained its mythical status with the arrival of the internet helping to spread the word.

What we do know is that there are no special effects or speeding up the film - Lelouch simply mounted the camera on the front of the car and shot it.

This is what separates “C’était un Rendezvous” from all other films - it’s “verité”.

Today, the audience walks into a movie, safe in the knowledge of computer-generated special effects or a production where there’s enough money to block off streets and control the traffic. Lelouch had none of this.

Richard Symons, a documentary film maker, with more than a passing interest in fast cars came to hear of it and managed to acquire a very poor 2nd generation VHS copy. He wasn’t disappointed…

“I’d never seen anything like it, 9 minutes of adrenalin that simply leaves your jaw on the floor. To cut a long story short, we got in touch with the director, dusted down the 35mm negative, restored and re-mastered it for re-release – we’ve brought out all the details and colours and it looks stunning.”

“C’était un Rendezvous” has come to represent something more than an adrenalin rush. It uniquely captures a time and a spirit that seems a long way away from today. Lelouchs’ brilliant ending only adds to this – making a beautiful sense out of the preceding nine minutes.

There ya go

I can't believe no one's mentioned the movie Hot Rod yet.

It came out in 1979. Starred Grant Goodeve from Eight Is Enough. It might have been a made-for-TV deal.

A classic.

Hey 69RS,

You're right . . . Stroker Ace was the pen name for William Neely (I think??) and the book was Stand On It. Bill writes/wrote for Sports Illustrated and finally 'fessed up to being the author of the book a few years after he authored it. I haven't seen the book in print in years and heard it's pretty collectible.

Greased Lightning? I thought that was a chick flick?

mpozzi
12-07-2005, 07:19 PM
Greased Lightning was the T-Bird's car and a song in
'Grease" so I guess "Grease" could be a car movie. At least the flick has the same name as stuff that gets put in suspension and steering parts of a car so that may add to the thought (I know . . . it's a stretch).

TonyHuntimer
12-07-2005, 11:42 PM
Greased Lightning was a movie about Wendell Scott. An early NASCAR driver with hardly any money, but he was still able to hang with the big boys and even won a few times.

Anyone ever see a movie about running moonshine in the south? The car was a red Challenger or Cuda...That's all I remember. And I'm not talking about the Dukes of Hazzard.

THX 1138,
A strange futuristic movie, the first by George Lucas, it's kinda wierd, but a chase scene featuring futuristic cars (actually Lola T-70 coupes) that blast through tunnel freeways at speed, a neat spill by a motorcycle cop. George Lucas used to road race at Sears Point shortly after Star Wars became a success...

I don't think that this one has been mentioned "The Killers" (1964).....but it is a decnet movie with good car scenes too.

Directed by Donald Siegel. Starring: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickenson, and John Cassavetes. Co-Starring: Ronald Reagan, Clu Gulager.

"The Killers" is a melodramatic thriller based on an Ernest Hemingway story. Two professional assassins (Lee Marvin and Clu Gulager) become curious that their victim, Johnny North (John Cassavetes) refuses to run from inevitable death. They know that North has been involved in a million-dollar mail robbery. Supposedly he has double-crossed his accomplices and fled with the money. The assassins decide to track down the man who hired them to kill North hoping that he will lead them to the million dollars. Their curiousity unravels the mail holdup plot which involves North's alleged girlfriend, Sheila Farr (Angie Dickenson) who is being kept by Browning (Ronald Reagan), a wealthy, unscrupulous underworld character. There is 289 Cobra racing action at a western U.S. race track where, unfortunately, the Cobra driven by North meets a fiery end.

THX 1138,
A strange futuristic movie, the first by George Lucas..

Whoa! "THX 138" is the license plate on Milner's Ford in Lucas' great car film - "American Graffiti!" Coincidence, I think not!

And, I'm surpised no one has mentioned the BMW Films? The stunts with the M5 in "Star" are absolutely killer.
