aluminum fuel tank (not cell) for the street?

Are there drawbacks with a fabricated tank that's aluminum rather than steel/stainless? Totally street car. All weather.

My car's stock steel tank is about 18 lbs empty. If there was an 18-lb barbell strapped to the undercarriage and it needed replacing, it seems reasonable to spend a few extra bucks to get a 10-lb one.

It's likely a bit more prone to cracking in the event of an accident, but that may be the least of your worries if you wreck a classic car.

I've used aluminum for custom tanks several times. It's actually less prone to cracking than stainless steel, so the real issue is proper design to deal with its lower strength.

On balance, though, I prefer aluminum.

For limited use dont forget to pour in Stabil. Daily driven I have actually seen corrosion in alu tanks!
