Will Posey and talented team at Big Oak Garage took on the challenge of preparing Rocket Racing Wheels 1973 Camaro for the Good Guys Nationals Columbus. As shown from our pics and video, we are absolutely Autocrossing our 73 Rocket Camaro. All of our Wheels are tested for street performance, SAEJ2530 - Radial, Cornering and Impact with load rating of 2,000 lbs per Wheel. These test standards are applied to automotive aftermarket wheels and standards are more aggressive than OEM Wheels. With that said, technically yes auto cross is considered off-road or track use. It is also true that many parts that will become part of any build have not been tested for track use. We do believe our wheels have similar strength and weight characteristics of very expensive forged wheels. We have done well this season finishing 8th at Good Guys Columbus and 3rd @ NSRA Louisville. Having a blast!

Thanks! Nope. Tire didn’t go flat. However in on of our GoPro videos…the G Meter hit almost 2Gs while autocrossing. Haha

Thanks! We started down that road and decided to fit 12's and 335's. We are also setting the car up so that we can scale down and run 10's on 275's and 11's on 315's. Good Guys Autocross rule changes based on tire sizes swayed us to be able to run in any class.

Yes, last year car had DSE Quadralink and 10's squared up on 275's. We now have fitted an Art Morrison IRS and squaring up on 12's and 335s. We may switch out to smaller tires to run in Street Machine Class or Pros however. Can't wait to get it on the track soon.

Looks like 335 requires flaring front fenders and losing the inner fenders.

What about 315s? Were you able to make those work with stock inner / outer fenders in the front? I assume that is on a 11" with 6" bs?

I ended up installing a .25" spacer on my set up - Attack 18x10 6" bs w/ 275 only to clear the DSE control arm of all stupid things. On a factory frame. Maybe the DSE front frame locates it slightly differently. But I ended up rubbing the wheel to the upper ball joint area on the DSE arms at full lock on the drivers side only. Some minor grinding to the ball joint pocket would have fixed it - but the spacers give me a bit more clearance to the sway bar anyway and the slightly wider stance looks better, plus no issues with fender clearance or anything at 5.75" bs with 275's anyway.

Cool. Yeah, we had the same issue on the Drivers side rubbing with the DSE sub frame last year when running 18x10 on 275 tires. We were in the middle of the season and to get by added 1/4" spacers as well.
We had to modify the inner fenders as well last year. With the 335's this year on 18x12s, we'll make new inner fenders I suppose. Going forward, when we throw 18x10s and 275's, we'll have 4.50" backspacing and 18x12 with 6.00" backspacing. I suppose if we land on 18x11 set, would be 18x11 with 5.00". We just wanted ability to run any of the classes.

As a long time owner of a 70RS, I think you retained the beauty of the original body. That is one of, if not the best, fender work I have seen to date on any car. It looks low, wide and mean but still like the original car. Many hours well spent!
