Custom built Woodward power steering rack and in-line power steering servo.

I had this rack built for a hot rod street/race car project. It uses all standard Woodward parts. The only thing unusual about it is the custom pivot width of 25.5". If this fits your front suspension or you want to design a front suspension around it you could save a great deal of money as this rack and servo together would run $2100 new (plus lead time).

It uses a very easy to design and fabricate 2 bolt mounting system and uses mono-ball tie rod joints for minimum steering deflection and articulation.

Steering ratio is 2.09 (Rack moves 2" for every 360 rotation of the steering wheel) and has a rack travel of ~5.95". The servo is setup with a xxx torsion bar which is considered a medium lite setting as this hot rod was also a street car. This steering ratio and rack travel are pretty standard for this type of car (front engine, >3000lbs, big front tires).


A relatively inexpensive kit can be purchased from woodward to mount the servo directly to the rack, my chassis did not have room so the servo was installed as part of the steering shaft. Both the rack and servo use the standard woodward 3/4" 20 spline interface. Pressure hoses are included.

The car spent more time on jackstands being hot rodded than actually driven, so the rack is like new in terms of wear. The driver side boot has a tear and should be replaced, the more complex passenger side is fine. There is a minor amount of black overspray from painting the connector tube of the rack which inexplicably comes raw from Woodward. If you are concerned about beauty this could be easily scratched off. The ram can also be removed and the rack used for purely manual steering.
