Retractable lap or 5pt for now....

Didn't know how to accurately title this thread so here's the question:

I'm in need of new seat belts as mine were shot. I want to do a 5pt with a harness bar, but that won't be this year. Can I run the lap belts with ASM for now or do I need to use a retractable waist belt 3pt setup?

I'm not sure I completely understand exactly what you're asking. That said, take a look at the Schroth Racing Rally Cross belt. It is a DOT street legal harness belt that might work for you.

I'm not ready to install the harness bar as of yet. I was wonder if I could run the lap and ASM strap of the 5pt until next year?

I looked at the Schroth. I hate the way the strap comes across the rear window, but I will have to deal with it I guess.

If your head is not very expensive run just the lap. I would run a 3 point.

The Camaro has 6-point fixed and 3-point retractables. The 6-points stink for street driving since reaching the radio, heater controls, etc. is very hard.

I'd put in the 3-point retractables right away for safety along with a seat that has a headrest. Many aftermarket seats have this feature eliminated for looks, but your neck will thank you in case of an accident.

Steve, This looked pretty good to me, and I just talked with Brady about them for my Camaro. I really like them, just wish there was a "take up reel" (so to speak). Once your in these it's pretty hard to move around (like adjusting the radio, picking up dropped phones etc) unless you unbuckle the harness. Overall I'm considering these.

I'm going to go with 3pt retractables. My car came with headrests, but I'm running Recaro's now anyway so that doesn't matter.

I ran the 4 point Schroths with ASM for a couple years knowing I'd be putting in a full cage with harness bar etc. because I only had lap belts in the car prior to the Schroths. Cobreau makes a retractable 3pt harness that has 4-pt style straps. I'm not really sure how the safety performance compares with a conventional retractable 3 point shoulder/lap combo. https://corbeau.com/other/harness-belts/3-point-retractable-harness-belt.html

I had a 6 pt bar installed in my 71 442 convertible with removable door bars and cross bar. When the door bars are removed I have a 3 pt shoulder harness from a 2004 Nissan 350Z convertible that works perfectly for street driving. The 5 pt harness belts are still all connected - some to the removable crossbar and the rest under my stock strato bucket seats. For track days I remove the shoulder harness belts, add the cross bar and door bars and run the 5 pt belts:

at about 4:45 to 5:00 of the video you can see the shoulder belts. Note there is no crossbar or door bars and the 5 pt harness is no where to be seen. Also you can see the my wife's Nissan 350Z in the background that I copied the belts from. The cars sit about 3 feet away from each other in my garage. It was crazy how close the seat height and location of everything matched from car to car. I measured and had everything in the 442 to exactly match the 350Z and bought the belts from the local Nissan dealer but they weren't cheap. Really happy with how the belts turned out.
