I'm in the planing stage of a auto-crossing 89 or earlier s-10/sonoma with small block 4 speed combo or LS , my question is what the best wheelbase to start with short cab /short bed or extended cab or long bed. I'm looking at getting a truck in next few week to get the project started .I Autocross a Big block chevelle In CAM-T now and want to stay in the class Thanks any advice would be very much appreciated

I agree. I'm not familiar with all the class rules, but generally for autocross, the smaller the better. You'll get better front/rear weight distribution with a shorter truck too.

Short and light. Swap in an aluminum LS motor. The weight of an iron motor in the front will hurt your times. Move anything the rules allow from the front/engine compartment to the bed, or to the scrap pile.

What Bill said, as for short you might want to think about an S10 Blazer. Current plans include a new sbc with aluminum heads, tossing the back seat (only someone evil would subject someone to that back seat...) and moving the battery back where the back seat was.
