LOL, good advice... the voice of experience!
if you making it out custom, make it to fit your preference. try sitting in the floor and visualize a console.

Measure the space along the wall in your closet and cut it as big as you can for the main piece and slide it along the wall inside . This way it is as big as you can have one piece and the other pieces will fit in along with it taped to each other. This puts it totally out of the way and she will never even know where you put it if you do it when she isn't around.

LOL... you know i still dont have my answer but at least you guys reply and make me laugh. i posted on the elcamino forum, you would think someone over there would reply considering center consoles are a hot topic over there. all i got told was wait till i have seats in the car, after i already explained i know what will work even without the seats, 4 days later and STILL no reply. oh well.

I have a 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix as a driver. It has buckets and a console. Let me know where you want the measurement taken if this model works for you.

When doing custom work on your car and trying to figure out what size is going to work for something, remember that it is all up to the imagination. Try to visualize what it is you want ,not what someone else has. Get your tape measure out and go to the car and size it up.
I can tell you that most consoles are not much longer than 48" and most have sides that are 6" to 8" and about 8" to 10 " across if it helps. You have more than enough material in a 4 x 8 piece of plastic to do it twice or maybe 3 times if the pieces are put together intead of doing it in one piece.
When I made the floorpans for my car I just started with the big pieces of cardboard to get simple shapes and then tranfered them to the steel when I found what I liked.
Most of all it is up to you as to what it will look like and the hardest thing for some of us is to know what it is you are expecting for it to look like so we hesitate to give info that will not work, not that we are trying to not help but more that we are looking for something to come from you that is original to you and us. Keep an open mind and don't let the final details stop the progress of getting started. I run things through my mind so many times before I start that sometimes I just have to commit to an idea and screw it up just to feel like I am making progress.
Goodluck with finding the space for it but the closet idea is what I know to be the best for hiding stuff like that.

jim, thanks for the general info. i actually got lucky and was able to cut the 4x8 down to 2 2x8 pieces and roll em up nice and tight so they fit under the futon. i have a console already that was in the car the first time i did it. so i know my lengths and widths. but it didnt have an armrest, well now i want one, so all i need is the height and im golden. ill figure it out. you see the other thing is the car is on the other side of the state at my parents house so until i get there on christmas the whole visualizin thing just dont work.
