View Full Version : Rosie 2 my try at a PT chevelle

Hello , my name is Kris , I've drag raced for 30 years, but I got tired of NHRA crap and hung it up years ago. To do something with my time I decided to try and build a PT car. I bought a 67 chevelle ss that had most of the body work done. My plans are to build a 416 LS motor with whipple supercharge and a 4l80e transmission. I will be building and doing most of the body work myself. The first picture is of Rosie 1, I hope this PT car comes out half as good as Rosie did. Sorry about some of pics, I havent figured out how to turn them or make all same size.

oh boy ....welcome, looks like this could be a fun build.

here is some pics of the frame work, boxed and rewelded complete frame, I did not realize when I bought the fab 9 that the upper control arm mounts would be 3 inches higher than stock, which totally messed up rear geometry , so to fix it I ended up making it a 4 link, the lowest hole location is the factory hole

Due to the amount of money that it takes to build one of these cars, on the rear mini tub instead of buy a kit I just made my own, the piece that was cut off the left outside was reinstalled on the right inside, they actually fit very good. Where I a added the extra 2x2 to make a double frame rail I also made it possible to run wiring and fuel lines to keep it out of sight. Because I made the upper control arm mounts adjustable the stiffeners that I had bought from UMI would not work, so I made my own stiffener out of 2x2 but I had to curve it to fit under the floor.

excellent chassis fab. looks almost as nice as a Chassis Works or Schwartz complete system. i imagine this saved some $ even if you count all your time. should handle and accelerate very well. when do you expect to complete? if these projects take several years to complete, many give up and sell incomplete, losing a lot of $.

Thanks for the compliment, I've been working on it for a year. I don't know when I willl be done everything is so expensive and my kid is in sports year round. I will Get it to start and run this year sometime. But I still have a lot of mods to go.

Will your power steering pump clear the steering box in that configuration?

Looks great so far!

02-21-2018, 06:48 PM
Here is the start of my exhaust. It's 3.5 stainless oval pipe. It's done to the mufflers , now I have to figure out how to get tailpipes done due to no clearance anywhere.

634chevelle
02-21-2018, 06:59 PM
Paraman 1, yes it does clear but not by much, about an half inch of clearance . Here's a pic that kind of shows what it looks like.

634chevelle
02-22-2018, 06:08 AM
Paraman 1 , I forgot to say that the motor has adjustable mount set all the way back. Also I set the lower mount back 1 to 1 1/2 inches back to get motor as close to firewall as possible. It was dumb luck that it cleared but when I got kit from Wegner he said I may have to put on pump with remote reservoir. I can run what I got but I wil have to move return to back side of pump reservoir .

pittpens24
02-23-2018, 03:42 AM
I had the same issue with my exhaust and decided to do turnouts in front of the rear tire. Man I could not be happier with the look and the sound is insane. Since you already have ovals - check out Spintech for mufflers unless that is where you bought the oval pipe from already lol. I have a set on mine and like I said - it sounds insane.

03-04-2018, 07:19 PM
Here's some pics of the firewall

634chevelle
03-04-2018, 07:24 PM
After I slid motor back to firewall, trans tunnel had to be altered to clear 4l80e.

634chevelle
03-25-2018, 06:26 PM
Well I think I lost my mind, this is my solution to my tailpipe issue that I came up with. The height of the floor will not be higher than the original center part of the floor unless there is an unforeseen problem that I didn't think of. The tip thru the sides are not done yet. I haven't decided how to finish yet.

Here's some pics of what I've been doing lately. I put engine oil cooler in left front wheel well, still waiting on oil filter adapter with built in oil primer from Peterson. I also mount a 2017 camaro steering column and wheel. I'm not excited about camaro part but really like the wheel. It's got tilt and telescope, all the switches necessary to run everything and paddle shifters. Best part is that it was only $250 for everything .

Thanks pittpens24, looking back it's going pretty fast but at the time of doing it, it seems to take forever. Here's a pick if dash all cleaned up and a little primer to keep from rusting till I get time to do body work.

Hello everyone, it’s been a while since last post, been doing a lot of sporting events with family. What I have been doing to car is kind of boring stuff. Fixing problem areas in body work that was started by someone else. Here are some pics of what I got done. Also I built a water tank that goes in the rear for the supercharger intercooler. I also did have car running before I totally disassembled it to do body work.

Got tired of body work and went back to some fab work, making some bbc valve covers fit my ls.

634chevelle
08-25-2019, 04:08 PM
I’m having a hard time finding a place for the coil packs, I ended up mounting them on the firewall, I don’t want to see them so I had to build a cover for them, between the cover and my valve covers I should be able to hide all of my wiring to keep motor looking real clean. My only concern is if emi will be a problem.

634chevelle
10-06-2019, 06:35 PM
Redid exhaust tips and made covers which need cleaned and polished. I started making cold air intake with 5” pipe and covers for engine oil cooler and power steering cooler. Also installed new style hood latch out of a 2018 Silverado and striker out of 2018 traverse.

More updates finally, been doing body work (struggle), finally going to get painted in about a month, finished making close out panels for front, installed new style hood latch , latch out of 2018 Silverado, striker out of 2018 traverse, had to weld bottom to trunk lid to make straight, bought new calipers from z06, painted bottom of car with rapture, I did not like passenger door, did some digging and found some rust that previous guy had covered up when this project was started, had to replace most of bottom of door and installed new door skin, cleaned frame up and sent off to powder coat

I’m finally getting to put some stuff together for the last time hopefully. Put almost all of the drivetrain together except for trans, waiting on torque converter and have to finish painting trans. I milled the trans pan to get rid of logo and to make it so I can sand ribs after base coat to give it color contrast . All the suspension is UMI stage 5 kit and brakes are Kore 3 ZO6. Motor is my own 416 with Wegner supercharger, cam and drive kit. Trans will be 4l80e with parts from Jakes performance. Torque converter is from Protorque. Rear end is a regular 9 inch with trutrac and 35 spline axles from Moser. The body should be off anytime now to get painted. I ordered wheels from Boze, they said 6-8 weeks. With any luck I should be able to at least take it for a cruise later this fall. (Fingers crossed)

It’s been a little while since last post, got tired of body work so I sent body off to get finished and painted. I got a little more done on chassis, ran some ac lines and all brake lines on the frame. Painted inside the body to make all one color before it went away. My emblems showed up for grille, tail panel and front fenders. I think the came out awesome thanks billet badges !! Also my rims got done and mounted some rubber. On the back I just put some used tires I had because as soon as I can drive this thing I’m pretty sure the tires will be melted off!! Thanks to Boze for the rims they look awesome!! 20x12 rears and 18x10 fronts. I rolled all cars out because I did a massive garage cleaning, way overdue.

What an awesome build 634! You have done an amazing job with it and I personally love the attention to detail you give.

I have a couple of questions:
- When you did your firewall did you skin over the old or cut it all out and weld in new steel?
- When working on your frame did you weld it to a frame table to keep it true? If not any tips? I will be mini tubbing my GS and adding support throughout like you did.

634chevelle
02-02-2021, 08:32 PM
BBskylark thanks for compliments. The firewall is just skinned with I want to say 16 gauge metal. When I did the frame I did not tie to table, I know that’s not the correct way but I didn’t have a table. When I welded I did short sections to not get to hot to keep warping to a minimum. I took measurements before and after to make sure everything was ok.

Little update, got the dash all done except for a couple dust nibs that need taken care of. I know I should have have done it first but I got a little excited to see all the together. I also moved the glove box latch release to underneath . I also had my cluster updated by switching the tach and speedo. I think the cluster looks much better like this. Thanks to Dakota Digital for helping me out. I’m mad at myself for not telling them to take mph out of speedo and having it say Rosie. I think that would have been a nice touch. I also have 3 sets of exhaust trim rings cut out, trying to decide which design to go with. I think for now I’m going to use the scalloped ones and when I get the middle ones completed I will see what I think. The top ones need polished and are probably my last choice for now.

634chevelle
06-06-2021, 04:31 PM
Making a little headway, got the body back from paint and set on frame. I noticed after I got all bolted down that the trans dipstick tube is hitting floor😔. I must have made tube when body was out for paint, I must have thought I knew where it needed to be but was wrong. Started doing all the wiring for everything, was going ok but running into some issues with everything on the steering column because of how the new car are wired. I got headlights figured out but need to do some more thinking on how to make wipers work . I also just put the taillights together and on. Had to do some grinding on bezel chrome to make fit around my wing mounts. Also found out that I messed up my back rim backspace. I cannot believe I screwed that’s up! That will cost me! Put down all the sound deadner on floor, firewall and trunk.

It’s been a while since I posted any updates. I ran across a deal I couldn’t pass up. I bought 4 chevelles, 3 66ss and a 67 body. I sold 3 cars and kept one 66ss for my kid. By the pics you will see why it took a little bit. So now as I try to finish my car I’m starting to work on another car for a frame off resto. The cars came with tons of parts, some are nos, enough chrome to do 3-5 cars.

This is what I’ve gotten done lately. All of the exterior of car is done except for wing (waiting on paint). I’m trying to drive car before the weather turns crappie. I tried going for drive last weekend but trans wouldn’t shift and had no vss. Took trans back apart and found that it was missing reluctor ring for output speed sensor. I converted trans from 4wd to 2wd and thought it used parking paw lugs for speed sensor (NOT). Parts are supposed to be here tomorrow so I can put together Saturday and hopefully for a drive!! It’s been a long 6 years. Thanks for all the nice comments, I really appreciate it!!

Beautiful!

Just a suggestion, but I would paint the "grill" areas around the headlights to match the way the grill itself is painted.

Bt again, absolutely beautiful!

Finally got to go for a drive. Put on around 75 miles, everything went pretty good, have to make adjustment to rear end , I didn’t notice rear end isn't quite centered . Should be easy fix. It’s also a little loud inside due to interior not done yet and because of how exhaust is done.

Finally got the last pieces of the puzzle for the outside of the car. I know not many people like wings on the back of these cars but this wing is different than most , I love it!! Let me know what you think, I can take it. I was also wanting to kind of copy the wing on my race car because this is supposed to be the street version.

Finally some more updates, my attempt at making a center console, fixed steering wheel air bag and wrapped it, installed custom emblem and ring, made sub box and installed radio system. Also got some different front seats from Braum. I love how they feel sitting in them. Now I just have to make a new rear seat to match.

Hate making this suggestion after all that center console work but, if you like the new front seats, how about a second set for the back? Make it a 2+2 instead of a 5 seater, and extend the center console down the length of the car. No idea if that would even be possible without major metal work on the floor though, it might require cutting the floor pan out and lowering it a few inches.

I'm late to the party, but wow! Awesome build! If you don't mind, what engine management system did you use, and do the paddle shifters actually work to control the 4l80e?

The seats are too tall and the exhaust tunnels would be in the way. Thanks for the compliments and ideas!

Using Holley dominator Efi and yes paddles work.

Vimes

42 percent to the rear, 56 percent to the front, +-2%, and 3900lbs total, of course. What else could it have been? :twothumbs

Thanks mowtown 454, andrewb70, and steveracer33 for the nice words. I finally got my car done. I finished the trunk area and back seat area. I decided to do a rear seat delete and put in a roll bar that has detachable front bars to take out when just cruising and put in when racing. I also got to take to an indoor invite only car show last. The car got a lot of interest and it just missed peoples choice by 5 votes. Pretty good considering it went up against professional built cars that are not drove and I put on 3k last summer. I’m very pleased with the final results. Now it’s time for fun and racing!!

Thanks Rucumn for the kind words. Let me know how the cooler works for you. I basically have my car done, I’ve been waiting for a new valve body for my transmission for my paddle shifts so I have engine braking on downshifts from Jakes performance, it should be a blast to drive when I get it. I’ve also started on my kids car. We sold his old car which was a 66 with 5.3 and 4l60e. It was a great driver car but needed body work. I ran across a good deal on a 66 SS so the build starts. Here are some pics of what has been done so far.

I couldn’t believe that my real street tires would hold but at least I was running on low boost and 3:25 rear gear helps a lot . I loaded a couple pics but I couldn’t get any videos to load.
