Guys,

I have searched high and low and can not for the life of me figure this out. I am looking to do a manual rack and pinion conversion on my 67 mustang coupe. I was bidding on a Steeroids manual rack on ebay but lost to a sniper.

I did some research and found plenty of threads on vintage-mustang on DIY rack and pinion but when I go to order a rack from a J-car they all are power. I read on a mopar forum that pontiac had the manual racks but I cant find any. Ive looked at cavillars, sunbirds, sunfires, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a manual rack and pinion from a J-car ?

Thanks guys!

Manual racks suck, unless you're getting one for a 1500-pound car. The steering ratio will be super slow; even if you add electric power steering, the ratio will still be lame, so then you need a quickener, and it's a never-ending thing. I've done every step, so you can learn from my blind mistake-making. There is no advantage in a rack setup that steers slowly or too stiffly. Invest in a new quick-ratio power box. The market has improved over the years . . .

Ive looked at a new borgeson quick ratio 16:1 box. Is that a good thing to look for then?

I haven't heard about the manual rack having a problem with the ratio yet. The ratio seems very well for them. Ive only heard of a bump steer problem.

I use the TCP manual rack kit in my 67 Cougar. The ratio is good, but the steering effort is pretty high. I am going to add electronic steering at some point.

Andrew isn't the TCP based off a J-car rack? How is the turning radius?
