Having trouble painting the roof on my Ford Torino. This car is real wide so I can’t go from one side to the center without resting on the roof a little. I also can’t go from the rear of roof to the front in 1 pass (again, roof is just too big).

When In primer I would just paint the roof into 4 sections and just thought to my self oh well, Im gonna sand it anyways.

Well the time has come for the basecoat and I want to do it right.

Any tips?

A 3 step ladder...

To give you easy mobility from front to rear, I'd buy six 8" cement blocks and two long boards that could carry your weight when supported by three cement blocks positioned on either side of the car. If you want to use 2 blocks per side you'll probably need to buy 2x dimension planks whereas with 3 blocks per side you could get by with 1x planks. The other option for walk boards is to rip 1/2" or 3/4" construction grade plywood lengthwise the width you want (Home Depot and Lowes will cut for you) and screw a 2x4 lengthwise under the plywood walk board for strength and it will not bow and will easily support you with blocks on either end, you won't need blocks for support in the middle with the 2x4 reinforcement. I made 2' wide walk boards to use with scaffolding. To paint my 2 story house years ago and they worked great. If you want more width for your walk boards then cut the plywood whatever width you want and stack more cement blocks with the long dimension of the blocks parallel to the floor for stability and you'll have a veritable platform to walk on. Cement blocks are cheap and so is construction grade plywood (I wouldn't use OSB board - not strong enough). No ladder to move and you'll be able to move about just like you are standing on the floor, just don't forget to step down when moving backward. Paint the top first and then it's easy to remove the planks/plywood and slide the blocks back to paint the sides of the car. When done, you can use the planks or plywood for shelves or some other project.

You could also try to hang something from the ceiling over the center of the roof that you can grab on to help support yourself. I was going to hang a 1/2" piece of pipe down the center of my garage for just that reason. Just make sure to dust the pipe before painting so you don't get debris in the paint from grabbing on it. Add that to some kind of platform and you should be good to go.

Break it up into 4 sections when you paint.
That how i did it when i did my chevelle,it just like when you spraying a qtr panel or do a blend just feather the paint into the coat you did last.
Theres a youtube video with kc's paint where hes showing a practice spray on a sq body c10 hood and you will get the idea.

Figured it out! I bought a nice little stand at Lowe’s. Worked great.
