What are you putting the tranny in and with what engine and do you intend to compete in autocross events?

I'll be picking up a jakesperformance 4l80e in a week or 2. I remember reading a while back on ls1tech about mad dog. If you look at his website his horsepower ratings are way over rated for the parts used in the trans. 1200hp capable 4l80e and no billet input shaft, yeah right.

The 700r4s are great trannies but, you have to be careful with the planetary gear sets in the 700r4 trannies. The pinion gear in the gear set is real small and will not stand up to a lot of torque. I would talk to a tranny shop that specializes in racing transmissions regarding a 700r4 and see if they have a planetary gear set these days that will take that kind of torque. B&M Hydro and Art Carr where the go-to guys many years ago. I'm not sure if Art Carr is still in business with California Performance Transmissions or not. I think B&M is still doing racing transmissions. Also, make sure that they do a torque converter for your setup. The torque converter is a critical factor in a performance transmissions.

My vote is also for the 4L80e with the amount of power your big block is making. The 700R4 is a good transmission, but from our experience, it falls off quick after 550lbs/ft of engine torque, and that's building it with all the bells and whistles. The 4L80e can easily withstand 650 lbs/ft of torque with minor upgrades. Yes, you will spend more for a 4L80e, but getting one and having the ability to fine tune shift points also makes it a much better option for anyone who is wanting to race with it.
