Since the 4l60e costs a ton to build correctly in order to hold up to higher HP levels I'm looking to go with a 4l80e for a 550 HP LS3. Question is what 4l80e should I be looking for as a rebuildable core, what should I get to improve performance & will a std rebuild hold for street use?

Locally I found a 2005 4l80e out of a 2007 2500 Silverado for $200.

I was going to then get the Transgo HD2 kit for it:

Should I upgrade frictions too? If so do I go Alto - Red Eagle (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GVA8W8), Borg Warner - High Energy or Raybestos (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=automotive&keywords=raybestos&linkCode=ur2) - Stage 1

Anything else I am missing?

Hi,
For a 550hp LS3 just a stock 4L80E is more than adequate. Even my stock 4L80E is holding up pretty well behind my 440ci LS. But for 200$ there must be something Very wrong. Clean takeouts go for 1100-1200$ (which i got mine for). Transgo is a nice kit which adds a good feel to shifts. Though will not help capacity wise.

The 4l80e for $200 worked in reverse but only about 25 ft in forward so if I get the tranny it would need a full rebuild or I can just use it for a core.
That being said it looks like one of the bigger tranny suppliers has a special for their 550hp 4l80e for $1375 w/o converter that I will prob just go with. They say it comes with:
PRECISION MASTER OVERHAUL KIT
FORWARD/DIRECT RED CLUTCH KIT
FACTORY CLUTCHES
HEAVY DUTY STEELS
HEAVY DUTY FRONT KEVLAR BAND
HEAVY DUTY REAR BAND
RECALIBRATED VALVEBODY
RECALIBRATED VALVE PLATE FOR SHIFT FIRMNESS
NEW ELECTRONICS
HEAVY DUTY 34 ELEMENT SPRAG
SUPERIOR REPROGRAMMING SHIFT PERFORMANCE KIT

Looks like a stout combo. You'll be using that tranny forever.
