View Full Version : What about tires?

It seems that 90% of the posts in this section are about wheels or wheel/tire fitment, not much on the actual tires. While a good number of people go with tires that are more track than road oriented, do any of you have certain road tires that you like? Probably meaning higher performance summer or all-season models that aren't really the hot autocross tire.
I'm looking to buy new 17" tires but have no intention of autocrossing, and my car is a 3-season ride, with most miles put on in the summer months. I also avoid rain like the plague but I got caught twice this year while at shows... would never drive 30+ miles in the rain with autocross tires lol.

Continental Extreme Contact Sport
I drive in the rain all the time on my autox tires. I even autocross in the rain on my autocross tires.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports are pretty nice as well, in addition to the Continental ExtremeContact DW or Sport like Donnie said.

What's your tire budget? Sizes needed? I went with Nitto NT555 G2's on my car. Michelin Pilot Sports were my preferred choice but for the way I drive my car, I couldn't justify the 50% higher cost.

Size wise... I'm needing 245/45-17 for the front, 275/40-17 for the rears. I've been thinking maybe the Conti's are the compromise between the Michelins and the Nittos? I have Conti's on my A3 S-Line and they are very decent tires.

Another vote for Conti or Michelin. I have the Conti Extremecontact DW on the Cutlass, and Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ on my daily driver Pontiac G8, both excellent tires.
I'm done trying to save a few bucks on cheaper tires, never been happy with them.

I've read a couple of good reviews on these tires, one review said it's serious competition to the perennial top dog the Michelin Pilot Sport, and priced better. Also made in Japan, not China or Korea.

Yep those Contis. It's hard to spend the Michelin money when the EC Sports exist.
The Indy 500 is very similar to an RE11 which was a pretty good tire.......and soooooocheap.

I am leaning towards those 500s. I need to replace my tires and i plan to start autocrossing more. But still mostly street. i dont have michelin money. I figure it might be a good learning tire and i'll upgrade as i learn more.

I'm also leaning towards the 500's. If you start reading reviews of top summer tires, then start reading actual owner reviews, it's extremely positive and I think Firestone (Bridgestone) are sweetening the pot with a Fall rebate of $60-$100 if you buy a set of Firestones. Going to hit a couple tire outlets locally to see if I can see a tire up close.

I am a fan of starting out with less optimum tires. I started out road racing with cheap street tires. I worked my way up from dead last to mid-pack finishes with those tires. I switched to a good tire and set pole at the next 3 races.

Finally got the Budniks and Firehawks on the car yesterday. Rear rims were lost by UPS for 10 days! Much bigger footprint front and rear with these tires and rims. Like before... DS rear tire hits exhaust pipe in close quarters if I make a sharp right turn up into my driveway which is pretty steep. I'll have to fix that, bc right now I have to do a 3-point turn and come at it straight on LOL.
