View Full Version : LSA ECU/harness and FEAD selection

I am building a 1973 Camaro and have put together a "homemade" LSA for it. My recipe includes a LS2 with forged internals, and adapter plates for the blower assembly. I have a BTR stage 3 supercharger cam and related valvetrain upgrades. I am using the t56 from the GTO that the engine came from. I think the LSA/ZL1 race drive set up from LSX concepts looks like the way to go for the FEAD with my stock subframe car. What I am struggling with despite a lot a research and phone calls is the best ecu/harness to use for this. I really like the Holley stuff and the displays, gauges, etc. that are available. I called their tech line and the gentleman told me they don't have a system for my engine. In his words he stated "we just can't control that engine". All the Dominator kits that come with huge injectors and even a Super Chevy article with a Holley ecu on LSA went through my mind but I chose to accept his answer because I know they don't have a canned LSA kit.
I think my 2 best options are:
1. Use the GMPP LSA controller kit which would require tuning and probably some complications because my LSA is just a LS2 with LSA blower. This means I have to find a tuner in the St. Louis area.
2. Use one of the Holley systems that are set up for boosted applications. I don't know if any of the self tuning features are going to get me even close with this choice. Tuning would still be required.
I know just enough about tuning to know I cannot do it.
I need to purchase my equipment from a vendor AND dealer who will help me with the selection and install concerns. I expect to pay for this, I am an equipment mechanic and don't apply my expertise for free. The Holley equipment and software looks like I could work with it a little and make some simple adjustments.
The more I learn, the more questions I have. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gearhead23,
In my opinion, Your best option is to go for the LSA pcm (E67). The car will start just with the basic tune of a regular LSA after You disable watts of course. You can just buy a used E67 from Ebay & a takeout factory harness. And Your good to go without forking out a large sum. BTW I am so happy with my HpTuners. It takes a while to learn how to tune but nothing beats the satisfaction of success.

Whoever you talked to at Holley is a moron. The Dominator is more than capable of running your engine without any issues. Even the HP can, but you would have to swap over to a cable TB. The Holley software is WAY easier to learn than HPTuners.

Another option is Megasquirt 3 Gold. The software is free, plus built in logging. I prefer the interface, and if you're going to run Speed Density anyways its a good choice, but will take a little work to make the harness.

I agree with your statement about the tech guy from Holley and his answer to me. I just don't want to say anything negative about a company on the forum. This gets at the heart of my problem though. Holley has become a very big company and the amount of tech inquiries they get is huge. I said that I just "accepted his answer" may make my post sound naive but I knew at that point he did not have the knowledge to help me. I should have asked for someone who is a Holley EFI expert to contact me. I sent an email to Holley a few days ago
and have not got a reply yet. If I can make contact there who I can deal with
I would buy a dominator ecu and with the help of the representative all the other components. The right dealer could be a solution also. Holley has efi classes that look like something I would like to do but the KY
ones are all sold out for now.

What about going with a gm ecu and either a gmpp or speartech harness and getting tuning by Shane Hinds. He is just about an hour north of me. Just another idea. Anybody have any insight on this option?

Not sure you can interchange Speartech and GMPP harnesses. They use different ECM’s if I remember right. Best give them a call.

Read this thread. You already have most of the recipe to make it work, no need to do anything fancy...not much different for your LS2...

Thank you, that is a great LSA related thread. I am headed to SEMA in a couple weeks. Maybe I can get some more insight from a few vendors there. The GM LSA controller kit might be the way to go, I am studying the differences it would have from my LS2 computer and harness.

What computer are you running on your LS2 currently?

The LS2 is still on the engine stand and has never been installed in the car. I bought it from a drag racer who removed it from his 1800 mile GTO he purchased new. I bought the engine, trans and entire computer(e40-24x)/harness and accel. pedal. The serious drag radial guys go really crazy these days. That's what I have so I am not converting a running car. The car is just about to come off the rotisserie and I am trying to stay out ahead of things and get a FEAD and engine management ready to go. Doing the LSA set up on it complicates my original plan but to guys like us it makes it more fun!

The GMPP LSA harness will use the E67 ECM and a T42 TCM. I believe that is 58X....really overkill, when you already have what you need to make this work...
A good tuner can do a few segment swaps and make it work just fine with your E40...
