Funny how this industry is. Where else can you start a project, decide to go a different direction, then come across another guy that wants a project like yours and takes it on to be his own, promising to take really good care of it. It's like a win win big warm and fuzzy family, right?
Such is the case with this new Speedtech ExtReme Camaro build. Some time ago we started a 69 Camaro project for a client. With big changes at work and being clear back on the east coast he decided a different route was more suited to him, but was stuck with the dilemma of selling his partially built '69 Camaro to the right person. Just so happens a local fellow had a '68 Camaro he was building but had a bad itch for a '69 instead, and heard about the car here for sale. Low and behold, the car stayed in our build shop and is now under way again. BTW the '68 is for sale now :D.
Here's the car when it came to us some time ago. As a clone it looked pretty nice but that was on the surface and reality check showed it was a little ugly according to disassembly media blasting.

Ouch. That is a lot of cancer.
Feeling pretty good about my own fabrication skills after looking at that... Jesus... I don't even understand how they could hide that patch at the body line. Maybe that's the purpose of that white stripe.

The body was so messed up on this car that we considered doing an entire new aftermarket body. In the end it turned out more cost conscious to replace what was needed and salvage what we could. It's really surprising what was under the paint and what appeared to be a fairly straight body, the previous "Bondo Sculptor" did a great job hiding it all. Here's a list of the new sheetmetal we put on:
Both rear 1/4s
Both rockers
Both doors
Both fenders
Top of the dash
Firewall
Complete floor
Complete deep rear wheel tubs
In the process this car is also receiving a few body upgrades:
Tucked rear bumper
Shaved drip rails
Bullet mirrors
Razor hood
Custom front valance
Custom sheetmetal dash
ExtReme frame connectors
Something a little different for the rear seat area
Bolt-in custom roll cage
Here are a few pics to get started with...

Back to the body work. Along with the new sheet metal we're doing a couple subtle upgrades like shaving the drip rails. This is one of those design cues that really smooths the visual flow of the car.

As we roll through the visual design plans on this car it's going to be a great blend of subtly bold, if there is such a thing. The exterior colors will be charcoal gray metallic, black, an accent of silver and maybe just a tiny splash of red. Nothing new right? But between the unique exterior stripe design and the interior layout we're anticipating this car will still jump out in a crowd and even with low key colors will create a decent level of boldness.
Here's a copy of the interior rendering I put together. Karl's always had a dream of driving a Camaro in the Silver State Classic as well as doing some Pro Touring events so we're setting up the interior to be able to easily exchange a proper race seat for the normal street driver seat. This OMP seat we'll be using has a cool design sewn in so we've decided to play the rest of the interior off that.
With an SSC legal cage Karl doesn't see any folks climbing into the back so we're making the rear seat functional in a different way. The back rests will be opened to expose the 12" woofers, having the speaker grille follow the upholstery pattern. The lower seat portion will open up via seat belt type straps to reveal storage compartments. The package tray will sport a contoured layout for the speakers and the trunk will have fairly simple and smooth upholstery matched panels.

We've been distracted a bit with prepping for the Good Guys show in Scottsdale this weekend, but I wanted to share this shot too until we get back on the car full throttle. Jerem'ys building some inserts for the hood, and notice he's using a hexagon mesh. The same mesh will replace the factory grill and you'll see that pattern throughout the car. More coming soon!

Karl's Camaro is now in the body shop area getting the sheet metal worked out. For those not so familiar with what it takes to achieve a high end finish on a car this photo does a great job of illustrating the hours that potentially go into it. Even with brand new 1/4 panels it's almost surprising how ripply the metal can be. You can see some slight manufacturing impressions in the sanded areas and some more prominent areas got a little hammer and dolly and a skim coat of filler to be worked to get that show perfect laser straight finish. More coming soon!

All that prep work really pays off. Karls' car now wears a fresh new hue, the same charcoal gray metallic his Ford Raptor wears. Next up- cut and buff for the smooth as glass show car punch!
For those of you near Nevada, we're doing a vendor booth at the big Mesquite motor mania car show this weekend, Jan 12-14th. We'll be doing demonstrations on how we cut and buff on this car right at the show. Stop by and check it out!

Now on to wet sanding... and wet sanding... and wet sanding... ;) Bob's moving right along on the cut and buff and it looks incredible! For other outer visuals here's also a pic of the front Forgeline wheel with a black chrome finish. Ben@SpeedTech
02-19-2018, 08:06 AM
That's a great question Ken. We haven't run it in the shop yet and it's not visible in the dyno video. They're controlled by a Holley Dominator system, and we'll be a little more familiar with how it's set up once we get it fired up in the car.
This is where we're at right now, engine bay is wired and now working on the interior...

Moving right along, the Camaro is now back on it's own legs, and Bob took the opportunity to give it a final back rub. It looks great at this ride height but to optimize the ExtReme suspension geometry the car will drop another slightly over another 1" for a killer slammed look. Karl really digs the Black Chrome and the modern offset look on wheels so he went with these Forgeline beauties to wrap the 335s around. Also check out the LED taillights, man these things are nice!

More progress on the engine bay and interior. A good portion of that wiring goes to this custom dash Jeremy did a great job with. Speedhut gauges mount along with lighting controls Vintage HVAC controls and some totally trick billet honeycomb vents that match that design element that's throughout the car. Lots of fluid cooling was necessary since this car is meant to maintain high speeds for long distances. That dry sump oiling looks right at home too.

With the engine bay mostly complete exhaust routing was next on the check list. We always use a universal fit stainless kit and custom fab everything so it's tight to the car, looks good and maintains flow velocity better than a crimp and go muffler shop system. Kar'ls Camaro uses 3" tubing with slip fit collectors and exits right below the valance.

I like the painted bumpers, did you start with chrome and have them dechromed or is there a source for plain first gen bumpers, I'm thinking a modified set would make an improvement on my S10 Blazer.
The car is just too cool... Joe
Ben@SpeedTech
05-01-2018, 08:17 AM
Thanks Joe! They're actually fiberglass front and rear bumpers, and we narrowed them a bit so they fit better. '69 bumpers on a Dime would be interesting to see. My son and I are putting together a V8 swap short bed S10 for him and have discussed playing with the front visuals but haven't had any real inspiration yet. The Camaros are very pointed in the front compared to an S10, using the fiberglass bumpers would likely be easiest to modify and match the truck's contour.

More pics! The engine bay is just about wrapped up, as the engine soon will be at race events too. ;) We made the custom air intake that goes down to the air filter housing which is mounted down where it will pick up air from below the car. We also machined the coil caps with the same rough cut texture that's on the billet intake manifold. The larger tank on the right side is for the dry sump oil reservoir, while the one on the left is power steering.

The hexagon motif that's on the race seat is now throughout the car, including the hood and deck lid and the door panels.

The continuing theme with the hexagons is alright, but man, that twin intake piping straight down sure looks awesome. No same ole s**t there.

Thanks for your input, I think your right fiberglass just might be the way to go, (doesn't hurt that I'm good with glass.) to clarify what I have in mind, up front I'm planning on modifying a first gen lower valance to fill the void below the bumper, (also gives me some options for a font air dam.) in the rear I have a roll pan for the back but think it makes the rear look funny. that was where I first thought of the first gen bumper, I'd like to get a rendering done, but I'm sure it will make the truck a stand out...

Ben, do you have any pics of how you guys handle the fuel lines along the subframe?
Ben@SpeedTech
05-08-2018, 11:51 AM
I don't but the car will be back on the lift next week and I'll snap some. This car has our subframe connectors which include channels for running fuel lines and E brake cables. Basically from the tank it follows the rear frame rail, heads forward through the channel, crosses over at the trans crossmember and follows the trans up to the back of the engine where it Y's into the two fuel rails.

Here's a shot of that fuel line. Notice how our frame connector's channel allows the PTFE nitrous and fuel lines to be tucked up above the floor pan level. Up front it goes up along side the transmission and behind it follows the rear frame rail up and then the Panhard bar crossmember over to the tank. If you need a specific photo let me know and I can snap it for you.

Here's a look at the bottom side of that cool custom air intake, a trick air filter box that's fed from underneath away from engine heat. Also seen is the remote oil filter location, part of the set up with our road race and dry sump LS oil pans. Next up is a custom air dam and splitter that will help guide air to the filters and provide the necessary down force at higher speeds.

That intake looks like it's begging to suck in water. Is there some sort of cover with baffling to prevent this?
Ben@SpeedTech
05-14-2018, 07:50 AM
@ Skylark- The intake is designed to have a ram air without interfering with over the hood aero, and the splitter we're building will be the bottom of a box that will seal the air filters off to the front mesh in the valance. The splitter will also keep any low riding road debris, cats, Mustangs and so forth from bouncing up in there. The photo is a little deceiving how low the filters are, just behind the mesh in the valance is the radiator support so any water that may be from a rainy day would collect on that (while the air would flow underneath) then drip down to the splitter and roll off the back. Any mist that may enter the filters would likely be far less than say a water/meth injection system. I suppose if Karl tried to pull a Jeep safari through a stream over about a foot deep there might be some concern though, ;) lol!
This particular car will pretty much never see a wet day outside anyway. One of the main reasons Karl wanted to build this car is to run top end races like the Texas mile and Silver State classic. Outside of that an occasional clear day cars and coffee may be it's other main use.
@ James- The Fesler mounts were hard to get so we opted for a kit from Morris Classic Concepts that included mounts that we painted black.

No Problem! We're all about everyone building top quality cars, even the DIY guys, so for the most part we're happy to share what we do here. When we design parts like the frame connectors, we try to think of what little things would make life easier, the fuel line channels are a great example of those type things built into many of our products. Good luck with your build!!

No problemo.
Here's some more pics to show what we've got going on...
The radiator support is in line behind the valance grills, airflow will go up through the radiator and down underneath to the air filters.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/sBQ3x2Q-1.jpg
The air filters are in front of the sway bar and will be sealed off, guiding the air flow and keeping debris and such from the tires getting up in there.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/EtZTwWe-1.jpg
The splitter will create down force at speed, seal the air box on the bottom side and help direct airflow under the car.

The interior's that coming together while the air dam is being fabricated. The back seat is kinda useless with the cage in the way so we made it a little more useful with the speakers taking up the back portion and functional storage compartments on both bottom sides.

Ben,
Any chance you guys might be offering that front spoiler/splitter as a bolt on accessory? I really like the design and would be interested in one that would bolt on the stock lower valance of the 68. Just sayin!

Sorry Steve, it's all one-off custom made per vehicle and chassis.
Wrapping up the trunk (no pun intended) custom leather covered and magnetically attached .090 aluminum finish panels really enhance the sleek look. One hides the battery and one the amps. Don't forget the go-go juice mounts too!

Thanks man!
Here's a couple pics of the hand made splitter. The flat bottom carbon fiber is a piece we bought, while and .090 sheet aluminum fabbed up makes the air dam. Inner walls direct air flow and keep debris from the front tires entering.Once it was all done we painted it to match the car.

Where did you source the grill mesh from?
Ben@SpeedTech

That mesh came direct from McNichol's. We bought a large sheet, I think you can buy smaller sections from different distributors through ebay and such.

It's done!!! Karl's car is wrapped up and I took a few pics out back before we send it off to him. I have the photo gallery for this car updated on our website so rather than post a whole bunch of pics here simply click the link for the gallery. Go there and take a look, and then feel free to comment your thoughts about the car here. Enjoy and thanks for watching!
