SD vs MAF

I have a new crate LS3 525. The air intake system I'd like to use is a split intake (2 into 1) and the manufacturer recommends a SD tune with it. Is a SD tune ok, or am I leaving anything on the table by not using MAF?

If you have a LS3 525 and a matching GMPP harness and ECU, why on earth would you mess with the tune? Don't sacrifice drivability for vanity. Do a single inlet intake and mount the MAF per the GMPP instructions. That's my 2 cents.

I don't have a harness or ecu yet. To be honest the reason I'm considering this intake is because I like the symmetry in the engine compartment. I don't want to sacrifice any performance or reliability, but also don't mind doing a little extra work to be able to make the intake work. This company makes a complete system with core support, radiator, condenser, the air intake, etc.

I have done a dual filter like that with 4" aluminum, build one side that actually works and has the MAF in it and then Y the other side in as a dummy. No one knows, looks symmetrical, no retune required.

Stock GMPP tunes leave room for improvement. There is nothing wrong with a proper SD tune and you will pickup power across the board. You will however need to spend the money for a retune for this. Lots of other people have had issues with air intake setups and had to ditch the MAF or use a screen before the MAF to help it read correctly.

If you like your air inlet and are OK with spending money on that and a additional tune to properly calibrate the motor/car then I don't see any additional risk involved.

The tubes are stainless and the air boxes are mild steel, I think. It looks like it is 3" tubing to me, and then where they meet is 4". I could call the manufacturer to find out for sure.

Thanks for the info. From my understanding some new cars still use SD, I think I read that the new Dodges do. I don't have any wiring or ecu yet, so I can buy what will work best for me. I keep researching MAF or SD tune, I see good arguments for both. I have also heard that the SD tune works better with the ASA cam. But again, I just want it to run properly and not sacrifice anything to use that air intake.

If the ECM/PCM goes into "limp home mode" (for whatever reason) does it not rely on the MAF for that? If true and you are SD only what happens then?
