hello all. I have a 67 camaro with an LQ4. It has LS6 intake, throttle (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/13/0/19/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=954&BEFID=96477&acode=938&code=938&aon=&crawler_id=455941&dealId=9Ho0TsozcBXs6tkKzbXuqQ%3D%3D&searchID=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.partsgeek.com%2F8c6tzgl-ford-focus-throttle-body.html%3Futm_source%3Dshoppingcom%26utm_medium% 3Dpf%26utm_content%3Ddcs%26utm_campaign%3DPartsGee k%2BShoppingCom%26fp%3Dpp%26utm_term%3DFord%2BThro ttle%2BBody&DealName=67-6005%20A1%20Cardone%20Throttle%20Body&MerchantID=455941&HasLink=yes&category=0&AR=-1&NG=1&GR=1&ND=1&PN=1&RR=-1&ST=&MN=msnFeed&FPT=SDCF&NDS=1&NMS=1&NDP=1&MRS=&PD=0&brnId=2455&lnkId=8070676&Issdt=170725051251&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&dlprc=117.33&SKU=67-6005) body and injectors. Mid length headers, stock 317 heads and just installed a Texas speed 224r cam package. Running through a 4l80e trans with stock converter to 9 inch ford with 3.89 gears. My tuner is telling me he is getting spark knock in the higher rpm range which is equating to 309 rwhp on a mustang dyno. Does this number seem low to you guys?? Also, the fuel system is more than adequate. What would cause the ecm to continue to pull spark out up top?? I had 91 octane and he is now replacing with 93. Any advice greatly appreciated for tuning this out.

The 4l80e requires more power (because of more rotating mass) to turn. You might get some better numbers with a converter with a higher stall. What cam are you running? swapping the 317s for some L92 heads will help also.

How much timing is he running? Cathedral port heads really don't need a lot of timing to make power. More timing isn't better.

Cam is Texas speed 224R. Not sure on the timing numbers. Does 309 rwhp seem low? I would have thought at least 350rwhp, but I am clearly not a tuning expert.

309 seems a little low, but a Mustang dyno always reads lower than a Dynojet...plus the 4L80e is a beast and takes more power to spin. I say run it at the drag strip and calculate HP based in MPH and weight. That method tends to be quite accurate.

Ditch the factory torque converter, they are garbage. A decent aftermarket will make it feel like you added 50hp to it in the seat of the pants dyno.
You really need to do something with those 317 heads also. I switched mine out to 799's with 10thous shaved off them for a little bit of a compression bump since the lq4 used the dished pistons. Ive heard of the l92 head swap but dont know all of the details on it.
How much run time do you have on the engine before this? Unless you are running a catch can setup on the pcv system they like to hold oil in the intake manifold which will cause pinging in upper rpms. This usaully goes away after a few wot passes though.
What spark plugs are you running?
How about knock sensors? If you didnt replace them they are probably all rusty and nasty and not reading as they should, i have seen this before replace the harness with them and silicone the boots that seal them in the valley cover.
What are you running for lifters and pushrods? Did you measure pushrod length with the new cam?

Thanks for the help guys. Torque converter would help tremendously, but not in the budget right now and neither are different heads. I do run a catch can.
My tuner is getting back on it this weekend so hopefully I will have an update Monday.

I ran that cam in a stock LS6 (243s, flat top pistons) with headers, 3.73's, 6 speed, and put down 389. The auto, 4l80E, and low compression all are affecting your power. I still think it should make 350ish. Small stall would really wake the car up, I agree. Hopefully you can find whats causing the knock. You should see the power come up with the correct timing.

Thanks guys. Converter and heads are on the wish list or possibly throw on a supercharger since the compression is set up for it.

I don't know that L92 heads will work any magic since the cam is cathedral based. So likely those heads will require a cam change along with an intake and rocket change.
I suggest finding a set of 243/799 heads since those are a straight swap. Later if you want they could be CNC ported for more power or move up to aftermarket is the dollars are available.

Had to adjust some settings in abuse mode and the gain on the sensors. 338hp and 349 torque.

Your 9in is hurting you also. 12bolt or Furd 8.8 is better/more efficient. Probably 10-12hp at wheels difference or so. Alum driveshaft helps too. Do a valve job and bowl port on the heads with a TBSS or LSXR intake and you will pick up. 243 heads with some port work are best bang for buck, stay cathedral for torque. FYI, need to upgrade intake before doing heads, it's the cork. Heads will flow more than any of the factory intakes currently.
