View Full Version : What would your ideal 3" fog/driving light have?

Let me know if this is not allowed. I'm not trying to solicit any sales at all, I'm just looking for feedback for future products that can be sold through a number of retailers... my company doesn't sell directly. I'm only asking because I have a rare opportunity where my work can crossover into my hobby, and I can help the hotrod community out as well.

It's not as critical as suspension, wheels, or other things that are so pertinent to the pro-touring world, but that's pretty well covered here already. Moving towards the form... and maybe still function end of the spectrum of our cars, I'm curious if there is any interest in lighting. I'm a Program Manager for a leading company in LED light design, and I've been tasked with building a business case at this moment for ~3" driving/fog light. I know lighting gets brought up once in awhile here, so I figured I'd ask you folks directly. I've only been here a few months, but I've been kind of pushing for a less "rugged" looking 4x4 light, something that can work in our pro-touring cars. And now's my opportunity to prove there's a market outside of rugged offroad lights for us.

We're looking at what people want in a 3" light. It will be LED with an optimized beam pattern. We're thinking of a modular design that will allow for different configurations we sell, such as flood, spot, driving, and fog. We'd do something aesthetically pleasing, something like the Truck-lite but maybe brighter, but maybe a little nicer looking yet with no visible hardware like on the Truck-lite. Would there be interest in a halo? Or an integrated turn signal light? There are headlights with turn signals integrated, but no auxiliary lights that I know of. This would work well for say a 69 Camaro, you can have turn signals and foglights in the same location. And as mentioned above, it will look nice. I don't like the flat board of LED's look that I see so often, so I'm driving for something nice looking.

Let me know if you guys have any feedback. I'm one of the few hotrod guys in a 4x4 world, so help me get an idea of what people want! I know it's not a headlight like everyone asks for, but if this goes well, headlights can come next.

Yes on integrated turn signal. It would help me with my Falcon by using a single location for driving lights and turn signal. The more simple and clean the better, hidden mounting hardware would be great.

Would this be an "external" fog light? Or something that would be mounted into a bumper/valance?

I hear ya. That's what I'm going after on my 71 Firebird. I want to put lights like these where the factory turn signals are, so I've relayed to the design engineer how I'd like a turn signal option. Not a "city light" like so many cheap headlights have had, but a separate, distinct turn signal. Clean is my goal.

I'm shooting for something multi-purpose, but main goal is for something that will look right at home in an OEM application, and clean... primarily in the bumper or valance. No exposed allen bolts, or any hardware. Pretty much just a visible lens. I'd like to figure a way to be able to attach a bezel from the backside to allow a multitude of applications or mount solutions.

Sounds good, I'd like to run a set of tasteful fog lights on my Cutlass but with the rectangular turn signal as the only "clean" option, it will probably never happen.

I would suggest, if you do an integrated turn signal... the fog light should turn off when the signal is activated. Otherwise the turn signal will likely blend in with the light output from the fog and make it less visible. This is done on many new cars.

This would be something that can be done. Our products are getting a lot more complicated, and switching segments off for others is just a matter of programming. Lighting is growing at a rapid pace, we have a large engineering staff always working on the latest and greatest innovative technology. A lot of fun stuff on the horizon, I'd like to get hotrods into our company lineup if I can.
