Does anyone know the weight of an iron head big block, an aluminum head small block and an all aluminum LSX engine.

Oh my god its heavy, put a bullet in my head.

Now this isnt too bad, but I can manage it.

...... and damn, there is a God and this is a good weight.

Hopefully someone will answer this before I actually look up the actual numbers !! :)

According to some research I did, an all iron big block weighed about 685 lb back in the day. I just shipped my iron LS-7 to a guy in FL and it weighed 850 in the crate I built, with aluminum flywheel, intake, carb, distirbutor, water pump, PS pump, starter, and alternator. I guessed the crating material at 50-75 lb. so I would guess the complete engine weighed 775-800.

My engine builder says the all aluminum LS2 I am buying weighs 375 lb. I have to guess that is without accessories or flywheel. I will research LSX weight more and post results.

If I keep giving you the answers, you'll never learn how to find them for yourself. :) Here's what I found when I googled aluminum small block chevy weight.

The fourth paragraph says that Bill Mitchell's Motown Lite aluminum block should give you an engine that weighs 435 lbs.

Dart says their aluminum block weighs 95 lbs which would be right on par with Motown's.

Either way, going from an iron big block to an aluminum small block or gen III will net you the same as throwing a fat guy like me out of the car. :seizure:

Oops. I meant an aluminum headed small block. I've looked at google until the screen gets blurry trying to find this info.

Here is what I'm after: lbs per hp. If a Lsx motor is the shizzel then the hp numbers and the weight savings had better be there to justify the cost. I was reading the Motor Trend (I think) comparison between the new Z06 and the Viper. The Z06 won because of, well basically the hp to weight ratio of a meager 6.2 lbs/hp and spanked the Viper out of the corners. Now if I take those numbers and attempt to fit them into my car of a currently 3700 lb and 350 hp I get a meager 10.6 but if I build a 550 hp 383 and shave off 300 lbs of motor and another 100 lbs of excess/pointless weight I get a bad arse handling 6.0 lb/hp. And I do realize the difference between my car and the Vipers/Vetts – but any bit of math will help.

A good LSX motor will do a hell of a HP to weight, but a well build SBC could probably do it as well or better. Probably 100lbs difference between them but you could build either to 600-700hp, the LS motor will just take more $$$ to do that.

Something to add.

It is my understanding that news SBC and older SBC blocks have a weight differance of around 50lbs. Not sure what years, but I would guess that the two piece main seal and the one piece would be a reasonable break point.

Someone with more information pipe in.
