If you know foxbodies then you know there were other Ford vehicles built on the same chassis as the fox mustang. The 1985 Ford LTD midsized station wagon I have is one of those "other" cars. I am in the process of building this wagon into an awesome daily driving, 351 windsor, fuel injected, tremec 3550 5 speed, independent rear suspension, wagon. That is the plan anyway. The wagon is on a couple of other forums already but I feel it really will fit into the pro-touring concept, so a build thread in here seems appropriate.

I'm going to try to nab a four door sedan (also an 85) this weekend for a Lemons rally put on by some local college kids. Three days touring the region hoping your junk males it! Once I'm done I'll kill it for some parts unless I like driving it.

You should keep it and turn it into a MEN IN BLACK car!

I bought it for $500 from a charitable donation used car lot back in 2010.

I call it the Daddywagon. I bought it for $500 on a charity used car lot. I had a mustang with a busted engine sitting at home. I was aware of the chassis compatibility when I purchased the station wagon. This was and is my plan from the beginning. I'm no pioneer. Many others have already done this conversion. This is just my take on it. It is pretty much a bolt on proposition. No fabrication necessary.

This was the busted engine mustang. A p-600-b supercharger snapped the crankshaft. The brakes on this car were upgraded to cobra brakes. It also had ford racing springs and caster/camber plates.

A 1986 mustang gt convertible would supply the engine which would be backed by a tremec 3550. The convertible had been hit in the past and was rusting away. Should I have saved it? Maybe.

The 1986 gt engine was the first year with sequential electronic fuel injection. The pistons are forged flat tops with NO valve reliefs. Not the most powerful mustang engine for sure, but I remember the noise, the torque, and the smell, and I love it.

In 1985 your largest engine option for the station wagon was the 3.8 liter v6. If you bought the sedan you could get the v8 in the LTD LX or the special service package for police vehicles.

Everything that preceded was done on 2 weeks of vacation time by one person...me. Yes. I'm tooting my own horn a little bit. The truth is a real garage doesn't have the time to dedicate to just my project. If they did it would cost so much it wouldn't be worth it.

I could imagine the conversation... "Can you take the suspension and brakes out of this car, then take the engine and transmission out of this car, then take both of those things out of this station wagon, and replace them with the parts you pulled from the 2 mustangs? That's all I want, and I don't have a lot of money and I need it done in 2 weeks."

I should mention there is 1 major difference between the foxbody mustang chassis and the foxbody LTD station wagon chassis...wheelbase. Meaning all that connects front to back has to be longer. Driveshaft, brake lines, wiring...all a little bit longer.

Well, that's how it sat for a year until the following summer when I found an independent rear suspension on craigslist. So I bought it and took a week of vacation to install that.

Once I got this far I had run out of steam and I didn't have that initial focus and vision. I still wanted to complete the wagon, but I hadn't planned it all the way through. I didn't like the look of all the old mustang wiring and I had to do plumbing, modify steering column, add cluth pedal, etc. The problem was I didn't have it all, Over the next couple of years progress slowed. I took apart the steering column but couldn't put it back without adding the clutch pedal, cobra brake booster and new instrument cluster out of a v8 car. I want a 351 under the hood, so there's that too! Basically the car sits while I buy parts for it.

About 2 weeks ago I bought a 1993 mustang lx, 5.0, 5 speed. Driving and shifting a 5.0 foxbody has inspired me to get the Daddywagon on the road. Much of what I bought was for a long rod 351 engine build. I decided to just get it rollin' with the 302 and have my 351 built while I enjoy it as is.

The wheel above is a deeply backspaced steel wheel from the 2006-2011 ford crown victoria. I plastidipped a couple white to see if I like it; and I do! I am gonna have a set of these common police wheels powder coated white.

Well, that pretty much sums up where I am. I have been working on it pretty steady the past couple of weekends. I have an optimistic goal of attending fords at carlisle which is the first week of June. Only minutes ago I ordered a new fuel tank to house my 255 lph walbro. I am gonna teach myself bodywork and replace a panel in the engine bay. Thanks for checking out my Daddywagon! More updates coming as I progress.

Love the wheels, btw. Totally nailed the look. Just a motor tip, as cool as it looks, that GT40 intake is slowing you down. The flow on them is crap, even ported. Find a used Holley Systemax II intake and run a 75mm tbody/75mm mass air and stock 5.0 air box that seals to fender. Will support about 450hp at crank, no problem.

Thanks! Maybe someday I'll have a garage. I probably should have moved on from here 10 years ago, but I really can't complain. I like the stability. I'm not struggling to get by and I get to play a little. I don't like credit. I tell my kids when you use credit you are spending tomorrow's money today. I don't owe anything on the wagon! Haha! I was planning on the controversial long rod 351 windsor. I have all the pieces and will probably put that in to motion once I have a running car. Even if it proves to be a load of bull I intend to have the motor built up in the near future.

The whole "long rod windsor" was hot stuff in the early 90's(i think i still have the Super Ford article on it), but is a non-point these days. The science behind the long rod concept was to help crutch a crappy flowing head(Ford) for more overall power(piston dwell). Fast forward to today, you have tons of cyl head choices and airflow is flat out king. Tell me the budget and I will try to help build you a topend for the 351. You can keep the long rods if you want, but will not make any real difference in the end either way.

That is a very generous offer! Thank you! Let me ask you this, I want a 100% street car / daily driver. I want normally aspirated, and quiet, idles like a camry, but pulls like a freight train. If I really want the noise I will do electric dumps. How would you build that motor? For me the obvious would be 351, but then what?

nelzturingwagin
05-20-2017, 12:46 PM
Yeah, I pretty much went with commonly available parts. Because I want a smooth street idle I picked stock cams. I have a speed density cam within the 1986 gt motor that is in the wagon right now. I also picked up a camshaft out of a 93-95 mustang cobra. I have gt40 iron heads from a ford lightning which have been upgraded with crane/cobra 1.7 : 1 ratio roller rockers. I've got an e-303 just sitting around but I am not gonna use it. I acquired an svo extender to help with initial tuning. Pro flow meter calibrated to the 24lb. injectors. Obviously gt40 lower in 302 & 351 variations. I have a supercharger box upper, the tubular, and the explorer.

Update! It is off the jackstands! It still has some issues, but it is a running and driving project for the time being!! I love the sound of the v8 with flowmasters coming from a station wagon. The wheels are sleeper and hide the cobra brakes nicely! There is some smoke I think it needs valve seals. It could use a tune but once it's warm it idles perfectly with a pushrod v8 rumble while you are sitting at a light! I have jumped on it and it pulls nicely and will spin both rear tires if I stay in it. The car tracks straight and feels pretty solid. Because it was a lowly 6 cylinder family car the chassis was never really stressed. I think that's why it's so solid. When I drive it there is a big grin on my face. I have my arm out the window, I rev it like an idiot at lights (stick shift) as if I'm on a motorcycle (why do we do that?), and I heel-toe every downshift like a wanna-be race car driver (I was, I am, and always will be a wanna-be race car driver)! It's not finished, but i got to drive it!144767

Thanks! Still a whole lot I wanna do, aside from the little things. The big things are 351w, t56, torsen t2 geared at 3.27:1, and cobra r (brembo) front brakes! I already have most of the parts for the 351w swap. The t56 is gonna take some doing or a sudden influx of cash. The torsen is within the realm of possibility, but I have yet to setup differential gears for wear pattern. The Brembo fronts are $1200-$1400! All of that adds up to quite a bit of overtime. There is also the lottery build with a coyote or voodoo engine

The IRS is relatively simple. There is no fabrication involved. You bolt the front subframe horns where the the solid axle control arms were and you swing the the back of it up. Then you mark the four holes you have to drill for the rear bracket. once you drill for the bracket you just have to cut access holes in the trunk floor so you can install nuts and washers. The worst of it is probably the brake lines. You have to split at rear junction into left and right hard lines that meet up with hoses to calipers. I used what I believe were stock springs and the wagon looks lowered.

I love your wagon build, as I feel these wagons should have been marketed far better by Fórd. I had the same wagon, just painted blue I purchased for $100.00 in 2001.

I drove it the following weekend from Lewes Delaware to Jacksonville, NC (almost an 8 hour trip) and met my g/f, soon to be fiance` then wife in 2003. It made the 8 hour trip back and forth 3 more times before the trans died due to almost 240,000 miles.

Wish I still had the car as I have a family now. (Wife and daughter also love musclecars as much as I do. ) I have an SSDI claim thats running for years that hasn't been approved yet. But when it does, i'll be looking for an LTD II or Mercury Marquis wagon again. Let me know if you ever like to sell yours.

I hope you find one someday. This one however is part of the family now and I would hope that my family treats it that way. It sounds like the one you had was instrumental in starting your family. The Daddywagon was just a plan in my head when I started my family. My daughter was fourteen when I finally found one and my son was two. Maybe one of them will enjoy it when I’m gone. That is my hope anyway. They have to learn how to drive stick shift first!

I took the gt40 heads off of the 351 lightning motor to inspect pistons, cylinders and such. The piston tops are caked with carbon buildup. The chambers themselves look pretty good. Valves look ok! I used a golf club cleaning brush and some soap and water to clean the pistons.

Water pump leaks and I have an exhaust leak between the passenger side header and the h-pipe. I made an attempt to correct both to no avail. So I ended up ordering a new h-pipe and Ford water pump instead of the local auto parts reman pump. I really want to drive the Daddywagon again soon. Haha!

I had thought about that and I have the spacers to drop the k-member 1/2 inch. I guess I am lazy and anxious. I got to drive it and can’t wait to drive it again. Haha! Plus lowering the k member leads to other things like fan touching shroud and engine touching sway bar etc. I can accomodate the changes with drop sway bar mounts etc. But I don’t want to take all that time right now. The hood was dented already anyway.

The fan never crossed my mind, I switched to electric on my foxes. SN95 swaybar mounts will drop it enough to clear also. I remember watching this build over on foureyedpride, you've come a long way. Keep up the good work.

I’ve been driving the Daddywagon all week. With every mile I get more comfortable driving it. I don’t baby the car at all. I am working on upgrading to video footage to share my experiences. Pro touring is definitely how I would label the Daddywagon. It’s a street car. It idles nice and smooth once it’s warmed up. The exhaust is loud but not ear splitting. The 351 pulls pretty hard. I still have so much to do and so much planned for the wagon. Stay tuned.

I can tell you what the attraction is... they’re awesome! I drive the Daddywagon just to drive it! It’s no sleeper thanks to the flowmasters, but it is a crowd-pleaser. A hot-rodded station wagon turns heads because it’s unexpected! Mustangs, camaros, challengers, vettes, full size pickups are all over the place with that v8 rumble, regardless of whether they’re fast or not. I am drawing a lot of attention with the Daddywagon. A big part of it is how I am driving the car. Let us just say you can hear me coming and going when I drive the Daddywagon. The cruising / car show season is just about here, and I just hope the Daddywagon keeps running strong. I am having fun!

Fun buildThanks Y’all! I have every intention of beautifying the car and going more towards a show car. I pulled a fox mustang dash and console and along with that I am going to convert to stock 1989 mustang wiring for the engine and chassis. I would love to do a track day. I heel-toe all the time. It would probably be pretty predictable right now because the front suspension is pretty stiff. However I am gonna install Terminator front springs and spacers for the rear springs. In other words... raise and soften. I already ordered 1/2” rear spacers and isolators for all 4 corners. I have the terminator front springs. Before you ask... I am using Ford “B” springs front and stock Cobra IRS springs back. The back is soft. I can bounce it really easily standing on the bumper. The front barely moves when I jump on the front bumper.

LMK if you need pics or would appreciate any insights on that conversion. My dad used the aero dash and wiring for his wagons. I do remember off the top of my head that he notched the a-pilar trim, extended the wiring to the rear, and carved another bulb holder into the LTD taillight to handle all the mustang bulbs.

Funny thing is it was a bit lower with Ford “B” springs up front. It looked good but it was harsh. It also scraped and dragged in certain situations. I think it’s good right now unless I make it a track only vehicle. I am not into the air suspension thing so that’s not an option right now. I do agree with you that a properly “stance’d” vehicle looks incredible but this one’s a driver.

This is a pretty rare T56 sold by Ford as an aftermarket transmission for the windsor pushrod v8 found in the fox mustangs. The bellhousing and midplate are unique to this application and weren't offered on any car. Strictly an aftermarket offering. I am hopeful that al is well with the transmission. It spins smooth in every gear right now but we'll see how it goes once it's bolted in.

As much as I would like to go over the trans completely I will probably just clean it up as best I can and throw it in there. It does make me wish I could step up my engine build.
