Ok, little late starting this new build thread but here it goes.... Sold the '68 last fall and picked up a '71 roller. It was in project stage and looked smooth and straight. Long story short there was quit a bit of shoddy workmanship on this thing. So went into complete teardown mode. Project started mid Nov. 2016. Took down to bare shell, sandblasted and installed new floor, new trunk pan, new tail pan, new trunk drop offs and fixed several other misc areas. From there I got into some custom work...
Day I brought it home
https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/01/29/20160916_232413.jpg
Floor was originally covered with parts and dynamat, once uncovered it was clear someone had replaced majority of the floor from a donor car. They cut new piece too short and used 1" wide sheetmetal to connect them. Look at that nice straight tunnel...

Floor cut out...

After sandblast

Bottom of tail pan... 3/8" thick bondo. Completely removed tail pan

Uncovered several layers of patches over patches in trunk, completely removed trunk pan

Removed inner fender wells to prep for mini-tubs

And back to that previous shoddy workmanship... inner quarter panel on pass side was beat to crap from previous people attempting to install outer wheel well. I removed and replaced the inner quarter and outer wheel well prior to mini tub installation on this side.

While car was out of shop getting cage installed I refurbished the original tilt column. Washed out and repacked bearings, fresh paint and added NRG hub adapter and steering wheel quick release. Also replaced levers with new billet levers..... I don't ever want to pull one of these apart again

Underbody is now complete, took it to the local Line-X shop and had the underbody sprayed with bedliner spray. Did this with my old '68 as well and it turned out nice so did it again on this one.

Added some brackets in the trunk area to accommodate a spare... just trying to think ahead. The plan is to have a full size spare (not the donut in the photo) and have it strapped down to the brackets.

Buddy,
Do you paint the underside of the car to match the exterior or leave the bed liner surface? Just curious. Looks like you've got a heck of a start, I know it'll be great!

No I'll leave it as you see it. Thanks, yes pushing hard on this one

Yes looks great, but also extremely durable for a driver/track oriented car, seals up the underbody and acts as sound deadener. I will not use Dynamat on the interior (little bit of cost trade off)

Thanks... I guess we all learn from each other because I like the way you welded the frame in for your panel. When I pull my body off to paint, I'm going to weld mine in.

Thanks! Yes I did raise the tunnel a bit and it was needed. Go look at the very last photo on post #1 and you'll see what I did with the trans tunnel. A couple small issues I did run into while installing the motor was clearance at the upper drivers side bell housing area, I had to hammer in an area so motor would set down on the motor mounts. Also top side of tailshaft of trans barely kisses the floor crossbrace you see in the above photo. It would've been perfect if DSE mounts were about 1/2" further forward. I understand the reasoning for pushing motor back but in my scenario it was just a tad too far that caused some minor motor/tranny install clearance issues.

The hooker kit comes with steel plates that get placed on the interior side of the floor pan. I'll try and get a couple pics posted.

Thanks Buddy, My bad..... I see what you did to the tunnel to get the trans to fit under the car......hard to tell in the pic, but I can see where the tail shaft would hit the floor brace. Have you measured the driveline angle? I'm debating on fabbing my own trans x-member and mounting it to the frame.....but the Holley piece looks slick and easy to install. Just wondered what driveline angle you ended up with using the DSE frame, engine stands , and motor mounts.

I haven't even checked angle yet so not sure what it ended up being. Just ordered my driveshaft and will figure all that out once I install it.

Great build you have going on, I have gone the same route as you. Got a 70 camaro and put a 2013 LSA engine with 6L90e from a crashed ZL1 donor.
I did mye own motor brackets, and have 2mm clearance from the oil pan down to the crossmember on the subframe.
Just wondering how much clearance you have on your oil pan when you are using your stock hood ?

Ok, here are some updates. Lot of small misc items so doesn't look like much visually. Brake lines are complete, fuel line complete. Most coolant and PCV plumbing is done. Swapped out ZL1 lid for CTSV lid that now gives me about 1/2" hood clearance. Starting on wiring (which I hate doing). Have majority of rear and front lights wired along with fuel pump. Still have to tie in a lot under the dash. Also went with one piece DBA 4000 rotors due to good reviews. Heavier than 2-piece but about 1/3rd the price.
Forgeline wheels are ordered. Hope to see them by end of May/first of June. Hopefully will have majority of other items buttoned up by then.

Nothing too significant in the past couple weeks, just cleaning up some plumbing and wiring, mounted ecm under dash, ran pvc plumbing, etc. Gathering up all my parts and trim that need to go to powder coating. Hoping to finish wiring this coming weekend. Wheels should be close to being finished soon.
I did finally finish design on rear spoiler and had it laser cut. It will be powder coated satin black to match rest of trim on car. It fits better than it looks in photo.

Hey just saw your PM as well... I did a manual brake setup with Wilwood master cylinder. I'm not familiar enough with what you have to know if you can just get/make a shim for it or if there is something else causing it not to set flush with firewall.

Did my first headliner install over the weekend. Aside from a couple ripples in the rear due to access limitations with the cage, I'm happy with how it turned out. Now to just get package tray installed and can then have glass put it.
I had initially bought adhesive from a can (with brush on lid) from Summit but IMO was junk. It dried fast causing the adhesive to be dry on one end of application by the time you finished putting it on the other end of application. Adhesion wasn't good either. Ended up buy a can of Permatex headliner adhesive (spray can) from AutoZone and it worked great!

I have used the 3M spray adhesive with absolutely no luck! whether the good stuff or cheaper. What I did find to work very well is the Dap contact adhesive in the quart can. You have to buy your own brush but this stuff works great and holds good too. I mentioned the spray adhesive only to show that it was another avenue but for me didn't work worth anything..

The 3M 08088 general trim adhesive is the one, I was using the Super 90. My friend that does interiors turned me on to it and I've never had an issue. The 3M is contact adhesive too, so you have to spray both surfaces.

Now on for final assembly of parts, still trying to get car running and complete just enough to make it to Motorstate Challange in 2 weeks!

Hey Dave, the rotors are DBA (Disc Brake Austrailia) and are their 4000 series one piece. If you aren't running several track events a year and trying to get that extra little bit.... just buy the one piece and save yourself 2/3rd's the cost.

So the past year and a half has had it’s moments but have finally made it to completion (for the most part). Got car on the road a week and half ago. Really tried to have it ready for the MotorState Challenge track event but just couldn't quit do it. Got enough tune in it, the morning of, to run on the street and join in for the cruise and dinner for MotorState but not enough to run safely on the track (nothing like pushing it to the 11th hour). Aside from missing door locks and side windows it is up and running. Interior will follow through winter.
So many people to thank for their help through the process of this build over the past 1.5 years:
Tom Farrington @ TDS Kreations for many build parts including the Ricks tank, Racepak dash, C&R radiator and Forgeline wheels
Randy Johnson @ D&Z Customs for my driveshaft and awesome front spoiler
Paul VanNus @ Dutchboys for the DSE clip, suspension and sheetmetal parts
Jason Mitchall for wiring and cam/valvetrain components
Brent Malone @ MalCal for the last minute tuning help
It’s been a fun ride, and while curse words and hair loss may have pursued, the day of breaking a champagne bottle over the bow has finally arrived.

Hey Buddy..... the car turned out great!! You did an excellent job! Can I ask what lower pulley and what alternator / power steering bracket you used? My LSA has all of the original brackets and I know I will have to move the alternator when using the DSE frame.
Thanks in advance, Dave
BuddyP
12-04-2018, 06:36 AM
Thanks Dave! Stock lower pulley. If you are using the DSE mount adapters and DSE subframe you won't have room for larger bottom pulley without notching the frame. Also word of advice, pin your crank pulley! I'm pulling my motor in a couple weeks to resolve this issue, mine came loose twice even with loctite.
Alternator is Denso pt# 2116020 (C6 corvette type I believe). Alt/PS bracket GM pt# 12578067.
Hopefully that helps!

Those look like the Holley LS covers, the fasteners are built into the valve covers.

Thanks Buddy, My motor is an LSA with original lower pulley, which I believe is 7.8" in diameter. I saw your picture, and it would seem that you have a "little" room to spare, but not much. I was curious as to what lower pulley you used, was it an LSA piece or some other pulley (Vette...)?? Like you, I'm using the DSE engine mounts with my DSE frame. I was forewarned that there is little to no room at the crank pulley and the frame..... As far as pinning the pulley, great advice!! Is there a specifit kit / jig you can buy for this? Thanks, Dave

I don't think they came with the hardware but the bolts are 6mm... I just can't remember length. Either 20 or 25mm

Yes it is a stock 7.8 LSA pulley. Also there is a kit to pin the pulley...

Just ran across your build today. Your car is amazing.
I've been debating running the inner front fenders on my 1973 Firebird due to tire clearance, however I noticed how you cut yours to make them more open. I really like this solution, but wanted to ask if you get much dirt/mud/road-debris thrown around your engine compartment as a result of the modification?

Those are Sparco Chrono Road seats. They are slightly larger than their standard seats. I'm 6'-3 220lbs and am plenty comfortable in them.

I do get some random tiny pebbles but that is it. It's not bad at all.

Been awhile but back in May I finally got the Camaro on the track at Putnum Park Road Course for the Midwest Musclecar Challenge sponsored by Bowler Performance Transmissions. Took a little but to get comfortable since being out of the drivers seat for a couple years but slowly got my focus back and was able to put down a 1:20 lap and getting 2nd fastest "top speed shootout speed" down the front straight. Next event is Motorstate Challenge at Gingerman Raceway in a couple weeks

Car looks absolutely fantastic! Nice job!
What gear ratio did you go with and how do you like it now that you have some track time under your belt?
I'm about to do a 9" in my 71 and debating between 3.70 and 3.89 and saw Quick offers a 3.80 which might be a compromise between the two.
Mine is a bit more street focused, but also will see some autox and track time, motor is a bit less hp for now but will get up to the 600 range soon - but it's carburated 406 now and likely to go FiTech with a Rick's vapor tank when I bump the power by 75-100 as part of a cam / head swap.
You have that tank too right - how does it work on the road course so far?

Thanks! 3.50 gear, gearing works well with the 600+ rwhp. 3rd gear general sticks decent. Much lower gearing and it may start to be a handfull in 3rd. My opinion for you would be to stick with a 3.70 for your setup, especially if more street focused. Yes I have Ricks with Vaporworx. It's been down to 1/4 tank on the road course with zero fuel starvation issues. It's been great so far.

The problem I have is I need to keep RPM above 2500 or even 3000 better yet since I have a carb motor. It's not happy going WOT below about 3K. Rips from 3-6500. But it's very different from a LS motor. I have 3.73 in my 2016 with taller tires, so pretty similar to a 3.5 gear and that is just not enough gear even on the street most of the time. As a result I am still leaning towards a 3.89 gear. Good to hear on the tank. I wish Safe Racer made a bolt in fuel cell for early Camaro's like they do for early Mustangs. They only have a 3rd gen tank for Camaros. Pretty lame.

Finally getting around to posting some pics from motorstate challenge at Gingerman Raceway. It was extremely HOT out, miserably so... which made for an extremely loose car. After some tweeks through the day ended up with a 1.45 lap time but was still a messy one. Not how I wanted the day to go but will chalk it up for experience. Saturday mornings track-attack was 15 degrees cooler and changed the car from loose to slightly tight but manageable enough to get a respectable 104.2. I'll take it. Once again an absolutely great event put on by the Motorstate crew!
