I have already started my build. I am build a 65 Mustang with a Inline 6 250 with a Turbo. It should make about 350-400HP and 400-450TQ. I already have a complete custom interior from TMI. I am in the middle of my paint and body. I have stripped the car to bare metal. Cut out the rust and welded in new metal. I am working on getting my fiber glass pieces from Mustangs to Fear fitted. I still have to install my complete front suspension from Street or Track.

Plans for the compete build.

Body: Fiberglass from Mustangs to Fear including 68 Shelby style hood, one piece upper nose, front valance, tight fit bumper, rear spoiler and end caps, tight fit rear bumper and rear valance. Blacked out trim, Ring Brother's door handles and hood pins, 68 Shelby tail lights, custom I6 gas cap.

Interior: Custom black and orange from TMI.

Suspension: tubular control arms and coilovers from Street and Track.

Engine/trans: Ford 250 inline 6 with Classic Inlines alum head, Yella Terra roller rockers, Clay Smith cam, DUI dist, FiTech EFI, Tanks Inc EFI tank, Turbo with custom Manifold, Alum drive shaft, 1969 Mustang radiator, T5 with billet steal flywheel.

Here is the first few steps of my engine build from a few years ago. The bottom end was not touched so my C/R was 8.5-1. I changed to a Weber 34/36 2bbl carb, DUI and headers. Finally got the money to buy and installed the Alum head and intake, 1.65 roller rockers from Yella Terra, Clay Smith 264/264 110 cam, Dual roller timing chain, performance balancer, Autolite 2bbl. Headers with dual 2" exhaust with a x pipe. I also switched from a C4 to a T5. Here is a link to the Mustang Monthly article in the build.http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/1310-how-to-upgrade-performance-in-vintage-mustang-six-cylinder-engines/ About a year later I rebuild the bottom end with flat top pistons and zero deck the block. That raised my C/R to 10.5-1. Sadly the machine work was bad and my rings never sealed and lots of blow by. The clearance should have been .0015 but it was .0045. I guess that is what I get for not double check the shops work. Even that it made 165 RWHP and 185 RWTQ. So I am guessing I could have gotten about 20 more to each if is was bored correct. Enjoy

The dyno numbers in that story are from Will's wife Falcon. Mike never got the engine running. When he passed it was still in storage. Last I talked to him about it he wanted to get it out and running. Sadly his cancer came quick and fast.

Well with a turbo and A/C in my future plus living in Florida I upgraded my radiator. I went from a 18" alum to a 24" from ACP for a big block Mustang. We cut the opening bigger and drilled new holes. Look for the full story to be in Mustang Monthly later this year.

Nice looking lower valance, it that something you made? Or who did you get it from?
Project looks great BTW.
Stopped being lazy and went back through your thread, Mustangs to Fear, I will check them out.
With a little work guys have been able to fit a Mustang GT350 valance on a Falcon and I need the room for the intercooler.

I LOVE this build!! I have a line on a 65 coupe with all the metal work done and in primer. Still a full on project, but the hard work is done. Seeing this really makes me want to go buy it.

I really like the looks of the TMI interior kit, my only issue is that they embroider their logo right on the sides of the seat like that. If I was spending all the money for their kit, it would drive me nuts to have their logo right there like a billboard. Not your doing obviously.

Can't wait to see more as it comes together!

It's been awhile since I did an update. I finally was able to do the second round of clear on the misc pieces. I did three coats wet sand then sprayed four more. I will wet sand them in a bit. I will be spraying the car starting on Sunday. It has been a long journey but will be worth it. I can write a book on what not to do.

Sealer and base are down. Clear tomorrow.

Yeah PVC and plastic. I still had problems with trash in paint. I tried positive pressure and negative pressure in the booth. Both where about the same. I also had a a lot of spray build up in booth. I tried mulit fans pushing and pulling with nothing seeming to work.

GT200
02-25-2018, 05:40 PM
I blocked my first two coats of base and sprayed two more. I waited overnight and sprayed four coats of clear. We got a couple of runs and the overspray in the booth settled down on the deck lid. Up next wet sand and buff. Slowly getting there and a big learning experience for me. The white area still needs to be sealed and then sprayed with a satin black.

Well I wet sanded the whole car with 600 to remove trash and to spray 3 or 4 more coats of clear. Hopefully reclear in the next day or two. I did start to get the other parts wet sanded for buffing. I did 1500, 2000, 3000 and 5000. They look really good and I am very happy with the results. I have pick of before wet sanding and after on the rear valance. I did use guide coat after the 1500 to help me know when to stop with the 2000.

Looks fantastic. I hope my planned DIY paint for my Mustang project comes out as good as yours is.

I could write a book on what did not work best. I did get more trash then I like in my clear but 90% is wet sanding out. I wish I went with a high end single stage paint instead of base clear. I would have sprayed two coats then wet sand. Spray two more and be done with it. I did two rounds of base with two coats each. I did wet sand between the rounds of base. Then three coats clear wet sand and three more. No matter which way I tried fan setup I got more trash then I wanted in paint. PLus could not get the over spray to evacuate fast enough.

I think I would have been better to do all body work and blocking my self then took it somewhere to seal, base and clear. But I did save a ton of money this way. My buddy had his GTO professionally paint about two years ago. He spent 12 or 14 thousands on it. It is not perfect deep scratches, pinholes and some trash. I think mine will be better just because I sanded between rounds.

I appreciate what you just posted but I want to add something to this. Every single stage I have used has very limited uv protection. If they are exposed to sunlight on a regular basis, they will fade. You will hear lots of people say I'm FOS but because you did it the best in the beginning, you don't have to find out if I know my stuff or I'm a loon. You did good. remember everything you learned and keep going. For most, every build is better than the one before. :)

I've tried to find somewhere local to just do the spraying on my car. No one is interested. I found one resto shop that offered to spray it for 5k + materials. That's nuts considering it's already been metal worked, body worked, filler primed, blocked and sealed... it literally needs a coat of urethane primer, a final blocking and color/clear. 2000-2500 + labor, sure, but at over 6000 dollars with materials, I figure I can screw up a lot of times and not come anywhere near the cost... I really wish I could just rent a booth, but again, no one is interested in letting me do so.

Hence the reason I really appreciate threads like this where people share the good/bad and things they've learned for DIY work like this. :)

The problem for the shops is that everyone will ask who painted the car. If the work you did is sub-par then it will reflect on them.

I have gotten more done. Wet sanded the car with 1500, 2000, 3000 and 5000. I should have spent more time with the 2000 and up with a DA. Buffing is taking a bit longer because of a few deeper scratches. But the car looks great after the first round of buffing with Menzerna 1000. Still have to go two more steps. I also repainted the dash and top of doors. With the help of Mark from Mustang Monthly we installed a new American auto wire harness. Also installed Dapper LED SEVEN head lights. The white halo will be daytime running light and switch to yellow for turn signals. Taillights are not installed all the way so that is why they are not lined up right. Still lots to do before Hot Rod Power Tour.

I bought the rear valance from Mustangs to Fear. I had the gas cap made from a guy on Ebay.

The ONLY thing I'm not 100% on is the door handles. I like the style of them, but in the pic, it looks like it was painted with bedliner. The rest of the trim looks much smoother. Is it just the pic? Love the car. I saw this same SPI orange on a Coronet over on For B Bodies Only and loved it there too.

They do look better in person.

Well I finally painted my Mustangs to Fear hood and installed it and hood pins. I will be installing the bumper this week also. Still have to buff it. Just over a week before I leave for the Hot Rod Power Tour.

Finally installed the front bumper and it looks very cool. The Mustang to Fear front valance, hood, upper nose and hood fit very well. Power Tour is less then a week away. Still have a few small odds and ends to finish.

How'd your trip go ?

It went really good and having A?C this time was amazing. My father in laws 69 Firebird ate the dist gear and the way home. We had to rent a u haul truck and trailer. Very glad to have done the long haul. Not sure I would do it again. Three or four days are enough for me.

Man I love what you did to that car! Such a high level build from the interior to the amazing body work. I love how the rear spoiler elongates and defines the rear, and the hood fits the character so nicely as well. Great job man, glad you got to enjoy it on the Power Tour, maybe I'll see you there in a few years(at the pace I'm going, lol).

I averaged 20 even with the A/C on. But with my 4cly trans and 3.40 rear gear hurt it. It is similer to me running a V8 T5 with 4.10 gear.

Well I changed my engine to a NA straight 6 250. I planned to turbo it but after adding up the cost. I did not think it was worth it for me. So here is my current build specs with the machine work done. I am hoping to get 250+HP and 300TQ at the crank.

250 block aline hone with ARP studs and girdle
deck milled to .080 to achieve a 10.5-1 C/R(the 250's have a .123 deck height from factory)
cylinders bored .20 over to use NOS TRW forged pistons
rods resized with ARP bolts
Balanced rotating assembly

Vintages Inlines alum head with 1.80" intake valves and 1.50" exhaust valves and intake.
Cam specs TBD
1.65 Yella Terra roller rockers
DUI dist(may change to a dizzy)
Dual out headers to x pipe.
High flow water pump from Flow Kooler
Sniper or FItech EFI
Dual electric fans
T5
Billet steel flywheel Zero balanced

Where did you come up with the girdle? I have a CI head, for a 200 I think I want to put in an MGBGT. Probably won't need a girdle w/ shorter stroke.

250 flywheel is same as a Windsor w/ different balance, correct?

I bought the girdle from Australia. They do not make one for the 200. 250 fly is the same with no weights on it.

Finally got to install the 250 to replace the 200. Had a few bumps but it is in. Hopefully break the cam in this week. Had to modify trans mount to slid engine back about an inch. Still have to install electric fans.

So glad you did something other than LS or Coyote. Both would have been good choices, but the 250 is an interesting alternative, and will have that great straightsix sound as it builds revs. Kudos for the vision and determination to do it your way.

More pics. Will be installing Sniper 2bbl tomorrow. Car runs so much better then before. Can't wait to dyno it. Also had a 68 GTO(PHS documented chrome bumper from factory) that we had to do some minor work to get the fenders and hood line back up. Another person did work to it and messed it up. They even chipped the paint and driver door and fender.
