69 Camaro rear seat delete

Thinking about not putting a rear seat in the car. I'm thinking about some type of flat shelf where the seat would have been but with a couple of hinged storage boxes.
Just hoping someone has done something like this so I can get some ideas :help:

Looking for a way to make the rear seat delete light weight & also look almost factory or at least period correct. I see lots for other cars, but nothing for the 1st gen F body.

I made it out of 1/2" MDF. I built the main base first then the wheel tub covers which bolt to the base. The top of the base has a slot cut into it that the back rest piece fits into. The top of the back rest is built up such that it slides over the original seat hooks just like the original seat would have. I used the original seat mounting points to hold it in place in case I ever wanted to go back to using the original seat.

How did you attach the wood?

I started with a base that I built up for the "seat" area and got that level. From there I started with a piece of plywood screwed to the seat back and built off of that. Every compartment with a speaker had to be a minimum of cubic inches to allow the speakers to drive correctly. It is built like a studded wall glued solid and with each section sealed with silicone to stop air leakage. The top layer is actually 2 layers of 3/8" wiggle wood glued together. To get that tight top radius, I still had to soak it in water and put under a heat lamp to get more flex. The center section console throughout is totally removable for servicing. Attaching some pics. Hope that helps.....

I was thinking about a simpler approach by removing the small seat brackets & just running carpet all the way to the rear where the floor pan meets the trunk. The carpet is already 2 piece, so just a bigger piece of the same carpet should work. Not sure how well it would "mold" over the tunnel, etc. For the rear area where the seat back originally was maybe just a sheet of aluminum wrapped in the DEI leather look sound deadening material. Same for the wheel tubs. Looking for light weight & simplicity. Adding a roll bar so no real use for the rear seat at all.

If you just did carpet, that would leave an awful lot of real estate back there - like a chopped station wagon. just my 2 cents

Not a ton of room behind the rear seats, maybe 2' or so. Plus with the roll bar accessibility is pretty limited.

I'm thinking carpet because light, simple, clean, cheap. I've yet to see an example and the carpet will need to be "custom", but why put extra weight in with the rear seats?

The way I see it, I trade the weight of the rear seats for a roll bar.

Mikes Custom Cars has a fiberglass rear seat that will work with tubs and a roll bar. That may be an option for you vs all the (awesome) fab work on some of the above posts. Shouldn’t weigh much. Just a thought.
