Hi everyone,

Strange inquiry here, but I'm looking for a 3D model of a 1968-1972 Nova to base some CAD'd bodywork ideas off of. I'm happy to pay for it or download for free.. from an individual or website or really any lead at all. I'm not going to go to the extent of having my car 3D scanned however.. at that rate I'd just start mocking things up with cardboard and plywood. I have thought of getting a 1:18 scale model and having that 3D scanned.

I'd also prefer to get something moderately realistic, so not just a blob that looks similar in shape to a Nova, however I would be open to a model that a rendering artist has developed for their use and is close to realistic.

Anybody able to point me in any direction at all?

Cheers!
Joe

Could try here, might take a while to look in different categories for it. http://www.3dcadbrowser.com/download.aspx?3dmodel=55141

Awesome, thanks NOT_A_TA! By the way.. awesome job on your writeup of all the aero stuff you've been experimented with! I'm 100% going to copy a lot of your process to figure out some vents for my Nova!

From my original Google search of "1972 Nova 3d model" I found this one on that website, but as you can tell the quality was sub-par:

Not until I clicked your link and did a full search on the website just for "Nova" did I find a much better quality 1969 3d model:

I like http://cgtrader.com as a buying site, a little pricy but sometimes I'm willing to pay for good quality models. Most sellers will discount from listed prices.

Holy ***.. Dannnn, that's the stuff I'm talking about. Was decently impressed by the 3dcadbrowser model but wasn't blown away.. the squir.com model is pretty mint looking. That cgtrader site is super impressive too.. just combing through it to see if I can find a Nova that has been incorrectly labelled or whatnot that didn't come up in my search.

Hum3D seems like a really good source.. all very high quality models with a good selection too. From my searching I think this model may be the best out of ones on other websites.. a lot of the different websites' models have decently accurate looking bodies but the bumpers and trim always appear whacky, but this model looks pretty damn close to real life..

Joe,

Curious what ideas you are thinking up. Anything you are willing to share?

Oh nothing too crazy.. I mainly want the model to conceptually design some different versions of a respectably-sized air dam & mini splitter.. nothing like some of the OUSCI cars, but something to help redirect air from going underneath the front of the car. I figure I could go thru more iterations, quicker, if I 3D model it vs continually draw up versions in Photoshop (not my strongest skill). Some other things I'm looking at doing to the car, that I don't necessarily need the model for, in order of need/want/interest:

1) air dam + splitter with 4" ground clearance (still 100% a street car) for better airflow management, with downforce being the cherry on top
2) belly pan from the splitter to the firewall
3) fabricate inner fenders that fit the 275's, at my low ride height, but also completely close out to the splitter-to-firewall belly pan
4) vents on the hood near the leading edge, towards the centerplane of the car.. need to vent underhood turbo heat plus pressure for more efficient cooling
5) block off the cowl vents (going to remove the heater from car)
6) tapered vents from the front bumper cutouts to the lower part of the radiator not covered by intercooler.. something like a 5-7* cross-sectional decreasing-area taper towards the radiator
7) partial belly pan under the floorpan encompassing around the dual exhaust (not enough room to tuck exhaust above pan, plus heat management)
8) ~2" tall side skirts to match the height of the floorpan belly pan.
9) 1-2" stealthy decklid wickerbill

I ended up purchasing the model in my last post (from Hum3D) as it was the most realistically-proportioned model.. in fact it's practically perfect, I'm really impressed. I'm just awaiting the company to convert it to a solid IGES file type instead of their usual a polygon rendering file type. I'll be using the PTC Creo (Pro-Engineer) at work, and just for the hell of it probably throw the solid model in the CFD module just to see what happens, and as a baseline for some of the aero things I'm contemplating.
