Theres leather paint and dye. I can say I had some luck and took the time to do some prep. With my 69 Gto ragtop I cringed at the thought of going from parchment to black because it gets so hot. I have a 1971 Lincoln triple black. Although the black seats were more plentiful, I searched around and found some gray seats, did some homework and shot them parchment metallic

I don't understand the vs part or whether you sprayed them with paint or dye? Using one or the other depends on what you're coloring and what it will be used for. Looks like they turned out well either way.

There is a lot of myth & confusion on what's a paint and what's a dye when it comes to leather. It's almost like if you ask 6 people you'll get 6 different answers. Here's a good site for the correct definition

I used OER interior paint. It's a solvent base. And I bought a "touch up gun" from eBay for about $20. Worked great. I bought it in the paint by the quart. Oer. spec exact sheen and finish for many muscle cars. Of course the trick is prep. OER also sells a 4 ounce prep, but what's nice is you mix it with water so it actually makes closer to a gallon. With leather I did a little wet sanding. Advance auto sells very fine sanding sponges (800 grit) and I also got some 600 grit. Acetone is used by many bit a quick wipe only, or you'll melt the material. Here's the paint. It's a very natural looking product. My wife thought I had the seats recovered. She didn't believe I painted them. Here's some of the products. I'm sure you can fine black there http://www.oerparts.com/shop/parts/outlet/paint-chemicals/interior-paints/vinyl-plastic-paints/
Colorbond and SEM are also solvent based and sold by the quart. I heard the water base is ok, but I went with the good stuff.
