I'm installing a 427 SBC that's around 550hp in a 70 Chevelle, doing the fuel system and exhaust at the same time. I currently have a 700R4 built by Phoenix transmissions 15+ years but only 5-10k miles ago that's supposed to be built for "500ftlbs".

Question:
- If I'm on street tires, mostly street driving, what are the chances this transmission will survive 5-10k miles?
- Any brand recommendations for torque converters? Thinking lockup ~2800 stall. Transmission specialties and ATI were rec'd by a friend.
- Big question: if I'm planning to swap a T56 down the road, how much work am I saving by doing it now vs. cruising the 700R4 for a couple of years? Looks like it'd add $5k+ to the already over budget...

Thanks all!

If your transmission was built correctly to handle 500ftlbs then I don't see why it wouldn't hold up if all you're doing is cruising around. Unless the TV cable wasn't set properly before or if the unit ever got really hot, those things greatly affect the life of any 700R4 regardless of how it was built. If the fluid looks nice and clean and doesn't smell burnt then I'd say its fine to use. I would suggest using an external trans fluid cooler for that level of HP to keep the transmission well within operating temps. If you need a good converter l would contact The converter shop in AZ or let me know and we can get one for you as well.

what he said, ha ha.
but as far as converter i really like "YANK 3200-3400"stall converter in my built 4l60e, I have 460 hp to the wheels from an ls 2 and it will do stop and go traffic, cruise and free way with zero issues. Fluid looks nice and fresh even after 100 plus summer weather. external oil cooler right up front in the path of fresh air to ensure she stays cool.
