View Full Version : T56 Magnum VR VSS sensor - Are there any hall effect sensor options? Viper?

I have a T56 Magnum which came with a VR-type Vehicle Speed Sensor [VSS]. In order to get this as a reasonable input into my ECU, I would have to condition that AC signal to digital.

Are there any factory T56 VSS sensors that will go into my Magnum and be a Hall Effect type? I believe the Viper sensor is a hall effect, but I do not know if it will bolt into the Magnum.

Word has it that the Viper T56 VSS sensor is Hall Effect, but I have not confirmed this first hand.

Further digging has shown it is a 3-wire sensor [5v, Gnd, Signal], making it a hall effect. I am now just trying to confirm if it will fit in a Magnum Trans [it should]

Please post your findings and maybe a PN for the sensor. Lots of people that have the Holley HP ECU would love this solution.

2001 Viper on any parts store look up shows the sensor, $120 at Rock Auto. Hopefully I can dig up more detail.

A friend of mine measured a Viper sensor and sent me the numbers. They align nearly dead-on with this $16 sensor from Mouser...however, it is not a direct fit for the T56 Magnum. I think it could be easily adapted with a 3D printed shim/bushing. The Viper sensor is a hair long and the diameter is smaller. Printing a part to go over the sensor shaft and space the sensor away from the outputshaft slightly would allow it to work.

I think this is a very viable option to retrofit the T56 Magnum with a Hall Effect sensor. However, I think that is where my research will stop. My MegaSquirt dealer informed me that my ECU should be the newly released version, which will accept an additional 2 more VR sensors without a conditioner...I may be good to go already.

NOOOO, I thought I was about to come across my answer :(

I have a T56 magnum and Holley HP EFI, I am trying to figure out how to get a Hall Effect sensor to fit.

Nope. No answer, sorry! I would probably try the viper and whip up some spacers to make it fit in there. Or try to hog out the vr and epoxy in a Hall effect pickup into the vr case.

I see no reason not to try the sensor from mouser that was posted earlier. Here is the link again:

To make up the diameter difference, I would see if getting some o-rings and building up the O.D. would work. Spacing it away from the reluctor should be easy enough with a shim stack.

Yes, I remember posting that now, it was pretty close. I ended up running my 2step off of the front wheel speed sensor, so idle noise on the VR sensor is no longer a problem for me.
