Looking for some guide lines for sizing transmission coolers. Will be a 4L80E with a 2500 stall billet convertor, 505 cu in 640 hp, 3800 lbs, "spirited" street driven with some cone chasing from time to time.
Also looking for opinions on whether to run a cooler in conjunction with the cooler in the radiator. Personally I like the concept of this for bringing the trans fluid up to operating temp.

We have a couple options available that will get you taken care of. Typically for a set up like yours we would run just this external cooler http://https://www.bowlertransmissions.com/shop/accessories/coolers/tru-cool-transmission-cooler-oc-m7b/ or we have this cooler https://www.bowlertransmissions.com/shop/accessories/coolers/xtreme-dual-cool-cooler-xtreme-dual-slim/ for the more extreme end. Either of those two will be just fine on their own, but can be run in series with an in-radiator cooler, just be sure that the cooler in your radiator is in perfect condition or it can become a bottleneck point for fluid flow and cause problems. The other main thing to keep in mind is making sure you get plenty of air flow to the cooler. I've seen many instances where a guy will mount an external cooler under the car where it cannot get the air flow needed to actually cool the fluid. I would also recommend running a trans temp gauge if you haven't already decided to. Overheating is the number one cause of failure in these newer transmissions, especially when you are pushing big power and doing any kind of racing.

i decided to run through the radiator first as it keeps my engine at a cool 205 during 100 deg weather here then runs through an external oil cooler to assist even more so before routing back into trans.
cant be too safe when it comes to pushing trans temp during track days, doesnt appear to be bottleneck at this point in my specific application.
best of luck.
