View Full Version : '69 Camaro Steering Column/Quick Ratio Box Info

Hi,
Can anyone help me with this.
I am looking at buying the Classic Performance 500 Series 14:1 Quick Ratio Box from Summit.
However, as I recall the original steering column has a 3/4" 36 spline end shaft?
So i have to change the Rag joint. But what rag joint. The Cpp box has a 3/4" 30 Spline shaft. But when i started researching which rag joint or U-joint, there was a lot of talk about a DD shaft on the original steering column?
All i need to know really is what Rag joint i need to buy?
Summit recommendations: This steering box requires a 3/4 in. 30-spline steering coupler or rag joint.
But does that mean a rag joint with a 36 spline input and a 30 spline out put for the box?
Help appreciated in advance.

I got 1 of them boxes for sale. I know that doesn't help but if ur interested make me an offer car had about 1000 miles before it was wrecked. Buddy sold it to me but would rather rebuild my existing Chevy original quick ratio.

Does your car already have power steering? If so why don't you just have your rebuilt and converted to quick ratio? Lee Power Steering does the conversion on these boxes and they do a great job.

The rag joint splines are only relevant to the steering gear . the steering coupler on your original column You may need change coupler bolts. my new rag joint came with bolt options when I did this change on my 67

Does your car already have power steering? If so why don't you just have your rebuilt and converted to quick ratio? Lee Power Steering does the conversion on these boxes and they do a great job.

Personally, I would call Pro-Touring F-Body on this subject. Dave at the shop has some really well priced 12:1 steering boxes right now and he should be able to answer your questions fairly quickly. He specializes in '67-'81 Camaro and Firebird.

I would recommend a Jeep Grand Cherokee box.... same ratio and WAY cheap.

Quoting me and referring to a "junkyard" steering box, in no way, answers the questions on this thread or guides anyone to the answer the questions on this thread. The original poster could chase down an IROC Z28 or GTA Trans Am box as well. A used 78-81 Trans Am WS6 steering box can give you 14:1 constant ratio if that's desired too. I personally have 12:1 box from Turn One. While those may be considered some of the best steering boxes, they are very expensive.

No they are back now. I sent my "Iroc" box to them and the pump and the adjusted the box for the heavier road feel and then dyno'd the 2 and set the pressure level. There site is here- http://www.steertechgrp.com/
