I have the engine out of my 68 Camaro right now, so I thought it may be a good time to upgrade my power steering pump to something better. It's a Gen 1 350ci SBC with a long water pump, v-belt drive. It works fine on the street, but when I autoX or do an open track event it gets hot and pukes fluid. What system are you using with a long w/p and what are your thoughts about it. Remote tank would be fine for me, but I would like to stay with the v-belt if possible. Thanks for your input.

I've never had it puke and I use the original style myself when road racing. Just never top it off all the way. I run it on the lower side. Good luck sorry if I don't have an answer to your question just my personal experience.

I think you just need a cooler. The later style pumps are pretty much the same internally as yours. On Mary's Camaro with the 383, we bought a sweet pump, pulley, tank & bracket it from speedway. It's made for an external reservoir with - 10 AN inlet fitting. It works great with the long water pump pulley set. The sweet reservoir we got was awful, it made the fluid foam due to the return line fitting shape. The current reservoir looks different, might be ok. I can fix it for you if it isn't right. :-)

The KRC pump works well on a gen1. I think the low mount krc with a large remote reservoir is good option. As David mentioned you may need a cooler which is pretty simple to run.

I like the KRC with reservoir setup.

I do like sticking with a GM pump because if you have a failure you can pick up a replacement at a local parts house and get going again. At Scottsdale finals this year we had a pump failure on Mary's camaro and I bought a Cardone rebuilt pump at Napa for a 2006 Corvette, which matched our serpentine drive setup. Two hours work and we were going again. We carry a puller tool to press off and back on the pulley. There are two basic PS pump types for the late model remote reservoir. One is fourth gen Camaro and GTO with a bushing on the shaft, the other is a bearing type which is used on Corvettes. The bearing type will handle more belt loading. There are also cast iron and aluminum housing versions.

Larry, look for a PS cooler that is long enough to reach in front of your radiator, just a loop down and back up is all you need. Something close to 19" fits well.

Thanks Dave! I think I will start with the cooler first and see how that goes. The replacement units suggested look to be a good fit if the cooler doesn't work out. Thanks to all of your input.

Something like this is what I like. I placed it vertical on the left side of the radiator. If it's tall enough, then it's easier to mount top and bottom off the radiator support. This one is a bit short but is the style I like.
