My old Craftsman was broken...of course no one admitting fault, so time to buy a new one. Definitely need one I can also use in the car. I have no experience with butane powered ones, but solder so rarely, not sure if it's the way to go. What do you guys use?

I have tried a multitude of them. The ones with the pointed tips (the true soldering iron), to me, are useless. In saying that, the tips always wind up disintegrating after a short while. I thought I'd buy one from Harbor Freight, and after a while the tip went away, went back to buy extra tips and was told they don't sell parts like that. Their take was just buy a new one. I've had the best luck with the Weller soldering gun. A lot more money but to me is really worth it in the long run. I've got one I've had for I know 25 years. It's been dropped, broken and it still works. I even have the case taped together.
I use an old school weller 100W iron still the best

When I am working on a car I like to use my Weller D550 soldering gun. Instant heat so I don't have to leave it powered on and starting a fire or worse yet leaning on it. LOL...
For delicate soldering I have a Weller solder station with various size tips.

I rarely have to solder, but when I do the Harbor Freight iron works great for me.
