The time has come to start a project that I have been dreaming about since I was a little kid... Why is that? Because this truck has been in the family since I can remember, and it goes beyond that! This 1965 Ford F-100 was owned by my Grandfather when he worked for Walco way back when I was around 5 or 6 years old. I remember riding down the long driveway to the mailbox with my grandpa as he drove this truck. As luck would have it, I got the truck as my very first vehicle around 1992 or so... I drove the truck all through High School, and dated my lovely wife, and went to many dances and would later marry her. We have been together since! As we approach our 20 year anniversary, I decided it was time to dig the truck out of hibernation and start a project.
The truck had a rough life. I took extremely good care of it while I drove it throughout High School, but as I entered the Marines, the truck was put back into service on the farm. It was neglected, ran hard, abused, and ultimately parked as the brakes stopped working. I removed the truck from our family farm a few years back, and it sat at work in the back lot since.

Pulled the dip stick, oil looks great!! And it's full!!!
I plan to drive the truck home, "Roadkill" style, just because. It's a 30 mile drive from where the truck sits, but I want to drive it.

I did some fast renderings of the truck.
Full up,
ride/rake
And full down
I plan to use an Accuair setup on it.

I got the bottom half of the project.
SUPER clean California P-71 detective car. I will only be using the frame and suspension, the engine and trans will go.
Drove it around for a couple weeks, then busted out the Sawzall!!!

I am slowly formulating a build direction.
I am going to inboard the shocks and upper arms (Possibly all) to gain some room at the frame. Coilovers in the back, and a Watts link based on the factory 9" in the truck.
Engine will be a 9.5 Comp Aluminator 5.0 with a D1 Procharger.
T-56 Magnum 6 speed as well.
Front will be interesting, The room is very little for tires going in, and the width makes it hard to get a wide tire.
I might be limited to about a 275 on the front, but I think I can get a 305 in the back.

Ok, I think I have found the perfect rim for this build. I am looking at a 63mm offset rim that fits the factory Vic almost perfect.
It's an 18x9 and with a 275/40-R18 tire I should be 1/2 from the closest parts of the suspension at all points, and only .46" wider to the outside.
It will make it so it's a square setup, and that is what I am looking for. I have decided to give the bronze look a try, as the red on the truck should go well with it.

Wheels and tires ordered.
I got the rims above, but in Matte gun Metal as I figured the style of the bronze might be short lived. I spent a good chunk on rims, so wen't more budget on the tires for now. Firehawk Indy 500's in 275/40r18
Will post when it comes in.
I think I have decided to keep the 8.8 and build it up instead of a 9" but that could change as I dive into the frame some more.

Hmmm, care to elaborate on why not "just" do a frame swap?
I don't know if the CVs frame would fit under this particular F-series truck but i think you could "just" swap like Hot Rod Garage did?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX1mjS7Gjys

Because I want more power, bigger brakes, better suspension, larger tires, and longer range. : )
In the end, this should be for the most part an "Ultimate CV Frame swap for F-100's"
Looking at the rear axle, It needs beefed. The front will need custom brackets made for the brakes, but I think I have a combo of hats and rotors that should work on the front CV with the custom brackets. Fronts will be 14" Wilwood, rears will be 12.19" if all goes well with wheel placement.
Honestly this is an exercise in engineering for me, and I enjoy building stuff, or making it better.

Some measurements for the rear to keep the information flowing
Full rest on the Crown Vic (Stock bumpstops) is right at around 7 1/4" from spring pad on axle, to under-shelf retainer on frame.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Max up (as retained by the shock) is 13 1/4" from those same measuring points. This should put ride on an air spring at 10" for center of travel.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
With that in mind, I hopped on Ridetechs website and ordered these air springs.

Parts!
Ford Racing 8.8 Trak-Loc, Install kit, 3:55 rear gears, Drake Cover/girdle and a lube locker gasket.
TSW Rims came in. They are 18x9 Nurburgring wheels. These are Light! I am amazed at how light they are!
Also got the tires. 275/40r18 Firehawk Indy 500's at all 4 corners.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Ridetech air springs for the rear.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Mocked into position at full bump. I will have to make some plates for these. I have some ideas to strengthen, and add some aesthetics to the frame and plates!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Now for the awesome part here.
These rims fit PERFECT on the vic setup! I am .75" from the shock body. The 63mm offset puts them about .44" more to the outside from a stock rim.
If you want a bolt on 18x9 rim that takes up the maximum amount of space in the rear of a vic, this is the one.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I am very very happy with these rims so far!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Tire sat in place just to see.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I also ordered some Ridetech Q-Series shocks for the rear. At this point, I can pull the rear axle, and start on the cleanup, welding of tubes, and install of the diff components.
I will order a Strange Pro-Touring floater kit here real soon to round out the axles in the rear.

I designed a reinforcement plate in Solidworks for the back of the Crown Vic frame. The stamping is nasty, and I needed a good place to mount the bags.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Stamped frame as it sits.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Plate as it should look installed over the top. The plate is perimeter welded, and will be made out of .120 Steel.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Plate at 70% transparency to give an idea of where things line up. This is just a quick mock up, so not everything is perfect obviously.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This should make things look much better in the back of the truck. It will also make it very easy for the bags to bolt up in place.

Used the Hypertherm Plasma to cut the high portions from the rear of the frame. I used a large socket as a template for the spring guide cutting.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here are the sections that were cut out. I have the air bag under it to see where else I need to remove material. I modeled up a lower plate to go with the top plate and both are at the shop getting cut on the Plasma table.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Ridetech shocks came in!! I got the 8.35" stroke PN: 22199845 for the rears. These are used in GM truck applications, and look to work perfect for the VIC/F-100. At full bump, there is about 1.5" of shaft showing. I figure this is a great spot as I still have some compression for weight of the body and such, and the truck can be dumped without damage to the shock. I will most likely have to use some limit straps for up travel in order to keep the air bags happy.
Or I could go to a lesser travel shock, and move the mounts up. I will wait and see how this all turns out first.

CAUTION!!!!
GEEK ZONE AHEAD!
Alright, so if anyone (Probably not) has followed my Charger build over at dodgecharger.com then you know I love messing with tech. I junkyard fuel injected that car three years ago, and there is so much you can do to these new cars with little money. Looking at the Vic parts i have, I just must mess with them!
Enter Fords EVO/VAPS steering rack system. EVO (Electronic Variable Orifice) is a system that is on the old Crown Vic racks that varies the pump flow based on speed. The ECU sends a pulse width to the EVO solenoid based on speed. So at low speeds like in a parking lot, you have full pump pressure for ease of steering. As speed increases, the EVO closes and reduces pressure to tighten up the steering.
This is awesome!
But all I have is the rack with EVO solinoid.....
And 4 unused ABS VR sensors! :naughty:
So, I am going to try and feed a VR AC Signal into a generator to DC Pulsewidth and into the EVO valve. If it works, as the truck increases speed, the steering should tighten up. If I want to take it one step further, I plan to use an Arduino to command an offset via push button on the dash.
TLDR: I want to have a push button variable steering resistance control that is speed self governing.
Here is a look at sorta the idea I am working with from my Charger project.
VR Signal being fed into an MS3X and spun with hand drill.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Analog signal of toothed wheel.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Digital signal being processed by MS3X
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Awesome. I like your approach. It's nice to have knowledge of analog/digital electronics.

Was out of town for a while, but back on the project!!!
Front shockwaves came in. They look awesome! I am very interested in where full bump is set on these.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I pushed the chassis out to do some cleaning in the bay. This is at full bump. Wheels and tires installed. I love how it looks! Lots of Negative Camber at full bump on this setup. It squares up very fast as you lift it off the stops.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Mocked up the fuel cell out of cardboard. I am going to kick the back edge down to break up the 90deg to give it some more style. right now it's 17.5 gallons.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I am trying to keep the sloshing fuel between the wheels and not out behind them. So far, I think it's going to work well.
Duel Jakefab fuel pucks will run two pumps to feed the engine.

Did a little work on the back deck. I had to cut some small plates to fill the lowered body mounts at the corners. Welded it up, and started the metal shaping. This will give me a nice flat area to weld the plate to!

Also got the first article for the lower control arms off the machine!
These things are massive!
I will post more about them when I get the full run.

Are you still doing things between jobs at work, or did you come up with some other solution? I read in your Charger MS3 thread that the adapters you made for the Jeep CPS were basically the property of the place you worked. Or at least the design. YEARS ago when I worked at Radio Shack as a kid I had to sign something that basically said anything I designed that used RS's parts to make became theirs.

I designed that CPS Adapter when I was working for the company I founded called 2A-Armament. At the time we were going through ISO/AS Cert, and everything was on lockdown. I sent the original and ONLY CPS adapter to Rick Ehrenberg at Mopar Action so he could "Check it out." What they did was use it to publish a spread in a magazine about converting to EFI. They used my adapter, but gave no credit as to where they got it.... I was a little pissed!
The next month, they continued the article, and gave credit to myself and 2A to cover butt.
I never got the Adapter back. It's still running around in one of there projects. My car was down for a month. I fired up the lathe and had to make another one.
Crazy!
Right now I am working 100% for myself at Jakefab, however I still do contract work and consulting in the firearms industry, and real soon I will be in the semiconductor industry doing the same.

Oh, I didn't realize you had founded it. Cool.
Right now I am working 100% for myself at Jakefab, however I still do contract work and consulting in the firearms industry, and real soon I will be in the semiconductor industry doing the same.
Ryan
Congrats for working for yourself! lol. And thanks for answering my questions. Seemed silly to join a Forum I wouldn't be on just to ask questions over there. lol
Following for sure.
I seem to remember you mentioning a Jeep. Any links to it's build?

There use to be a thread on Pirate4x4 called "Project RuBACON" however all the pictures were un-linked and mostly lost.
It was a sweet jeep!

Nice tight little package coming together here so far!
It's hard to believe this was a Crown Victoria at one point. Fuel cell is almost done. I have a nice billet fuel filler coming, and I am about ready to sink the two Jakefab "fuel pucks" in with dual Aeromotive pumps.

I got the cell all finish welded.
I decided to change up the flange in the front, so it got cut off. I need to order a couple dimple dies. This fuel cell was a bear! I am still trying to learn some of the ways aluminum works as it expands and contracts, but so far so good.

Mocking up the brakes, and testing for fitment. I think these are going to end up being a bolt on deal for the front of the Crown Vics!
14" Rotors with hats.
Calipers Are Aero6 with the large displacement area option.
I will need to make a bracket to go from the stock location mounting points, to the radial mounts on the calipers.

Been a good while since I updated.
I mocked up the Ridetech Shockwaves so I could move the project to the large bay.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Safety wired the rotors and hats on the Wilwood SPEC 37 14" rotors.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Made some down and dirty lower bag mounts for the rear axle.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Almost finished with the upper control arms to go with the lowers. Still have to add zerk fittings.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Designed a part to adapt the Wilwood Aero6 radial mount calipers to the factory Vic knuckles. I might do a decent run of these of there is interest. These will accommodate a 14" rotor under an 18" wheel.

Also got the 9.5 Comp Aluminator Coyote in. Man this thing is amazing! Ford has done a great job with these engines. Great performance, and the time they have put into making them look great is awesome.

I assume the 3d printed adapters are "proof of concept," and you'll make them out of something else later, right?
The more I see, the more I want a 3d Printer. lol
What did you print them out of?

Correct.
It was printed out of ABS. Will go to 6061 when the time comes. I used the printer at work to print it, and it took 22 hours... Sheesh!

Milled down the stock frame tie ins for the Crown Vic. I was going to fabricate some sheet metal ones, but decided to put the "Little Big Mill" to use.
Had to make a clearance pocket on the one side.
Ended up working great! Looks cool as well.

Cool Build! I have 6 1966 Trucks in various stages. Would love to have a new 10 spd behind a Coyote in one of them.
