View Full Version : DSE coilover installation: Is the engine being out enough??

Is having the motor out of the car adequate for the DSE coil over conversion setup to be installed? I'm unsure if there has to be more of an unassembly of the front section prior to their coil over setup.

The subframe really needs to be out of the car, and the entire subframe needs to be disassembled, as you're going to have to cut the old control arm mounts off, and weld new ones on. It will be much easier to do with the subframe out of the car, but you could probably pull it off with the fenders still on the car. The inner fenders, hood, radiator and core support would almost definitely have to be removed though otherwise it's going to be really tight to work.
I think the motor being out would be good enough. Of course it would be easier without that stuff around, but you are only modifiying the upper spring cup and control arm mount. I have no idea why the radiator support would need to be removed?? just hop in the engine bay!

I removed my motor, trans, and all the front sheet metal....basically strip it down to a bare frame from the firewall forward. I wouldn't try doing this job with the fenders in place...it's just not worth the hassel. Be sure to count how many fender shims go where when taking it all apart, this will be a huge help during reassembly!

I said they would almost definitely have to be removed. I'm sure you could do it with all that stuff on, but it's going to turn a semi simple task into a back breaking pain in the ass one. I would take the time to drop the subframe, or remove everything and work in comfort, but that's just me.

It could be, but after laying sideways and on my back welding my mini-tubs in the trunk, I avoid small work spaces at all costs. :lmao:
