Will a 17x8.5" wheel fit on the front of a first gen f body if the backspace is set properly? Or, is the wheel too wide? Using stock upper and lower control arms and possibly 8.5" wide wheels. Thanks for any input.

17x8.5 should fit. I think the backspace should be around 4.75" or something.

You may have some slight rubbing, depending on what size tires you run (i.e 245, 255, or 265). With 245s, it shouldn't rub, but most only go 8" wide up front with the 245. With exact backspacing, I dont think you'll notice any rubbing though.
