Hey guys, new to this site and hoping to learn a few tricks to help with my build. Do's and Don'ts.

I have wanted a 70 fastback for most of my life. This year I bought a 70 Boss 302, (Clone) from a company in Tenessee. It came with a 351c and c-4 and it was pretty worn out. After exploring rebuilding it I decided to go all in and coyote swap it. I had already started modding it with 6 Piston wilwood up fron and 4 in the rear, lowered it, QA1 adjustable shocks, tires and wheels, etc. Most of it I couldn't use with the coyote swap.

i went with Mustangs to fear IFS system up front with Wilwoods. Tanks Efi fuel tank, in tank pump, fuel labs regulator and filters, and a hist of other stuff. As I started tearing into it I found plenty of rust from the PO "repair" so O am slowly taking care of that.

Lookimg forward to putting stuff on vs. taking it off.

Finally some good news. Got the passenger side floor pans out and the passenger side torque boxes are a little pitted but ok. Spent a few hours test fitting the toe boards and passenger side floor pan. Almost ready to weld it all in,

Finally pulled the doors off to start the process of replacing the Lower A pillars once they ship. Wifes bday to orrow so no work then but The rest of the week I should get some stuff done.

The passenger side is nearly rusted through. https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/Deranged_Racing/media/2851E950-815C-4049-8E39-02506364324A_zpsnouvkj7e.jpg.html)

I didn't expect that much rust below the cowl. Glad you opened it up and found it, that would be a safety hazzard. Nice build!

Toe board looks like it fits nice. In my experience the welding is the "easy" part as all the work is in the replacement part fitment.

Keep it up, it will turn out great!

Back from vacation so I spent the afternoon working on the car. Prepped a bunch today getting ready to epoxy prime the frame rails beforw I put the floor pans in. Shouldmget it primed tomorrow and on with the rest. Had a few rust holes in the top plate of the torque box. Cut it out, flanged 4 sides and patched it in. The rest is solid but pitted. The epoxy primer should take care of its future. The rust is from getting it cleaned. Sprayed a little Ospho on it tonight so it will be ready tomorrow. It looks much better in person than in the pic.

Epoxied the frame rails and torque box. Made my way over to the drivers side and finally got the drivers side full floor pan and seat pan on. Made some headway on the inner side cowls too. Brace it all up tomorrow and get to cutting.

Did you replace the torque boxes??

Dalpilot
10-19-2016, 05:00 PM
I didn't on the drives side, it was in good shape. The passenger side was pitted and had one small area that had rusted through. I made a patch and epoxied it but I am not sure I feel ok with it. I am thinking about replacing it before putting in the toe panel.

Today I braced up to get started on the A Pillars.

Thanks, I fly planes for a living so this is pretty new stuff to me. I have built a few cars, (trucks) in the past, even made it in to a few magazines, but all this sheet metal rust repair is new to me. Luckily I have many great sites and friends who help out when I hit a wall of knowledge.

Back to reality today. Had a few hours so I started on the toe board and passenger side floor pan. If I had it to do over I would do a complete floor. It would be so much easier. Still have plenty to do to finish this side.

Looks like the right rear trunk floor will be replaced after the cowl area is finished. The good news is I can see everything else from the inside and it looks like it is very solid everywhere else. Once the sheet metal work is done it is getting media blasted and we will see if I am right.

Cowl is officially on. With all the new metal I decided the rear engine panels and the radiator core support looked horrible. Off with the old and ordered some new sheet metal.

By tomorrow night it will have a front suspension and be able to roll again.

Now the fun starts.

Stuck the doors on today to make sure everything fit. Fit Pretty good for just sticking them on. They will adjust iut nicely with tight gaps.

I epoxied the inside of the outer cowl panels and got the drivers side fitted up. Plenty of clean up left to do. My grinder is going to be busy soon.

Cowl is officially on. With all the new metal I decided the rear engine panels and the radiator core support looked horrible. Off with the old and ordered some new sheet metal.

By tomorrow night it will have a front suspension and be able to roll again.

Now the fun starts.

Question ? Did you use a panel adhesive on the outer cowl pieces inside flange? That sounds like a tongue twister, but, I've seen some separate the cowl to gain access to the flange, and I've seen a restoration shop use a 3M two part adhesive to bond these. Was just curious to your method. They posted a video on YouTube how they did it, and some other repairs to the same 70 Sportsroof, and it looked to be a place that did quality work. I've got to do this repair to one of my 70 models, I've got the cowl removed but it's been sitting for a while. Seeing your project has inspired me to get back to work on my project, if I ever get my son's car finished.:banghead:

Since I didn't hqve the outer panels on, I could access the flange from the outside, welding upside down and a few of the spots I could access by going through access holes. When the outer cowl panel is off you have comolete access to the flange. If the outer is on its nearly impossible. I will snap some pics of the other side before I close it up today.

I love 70's, I am one of the few and proud, that like them over a 69, I'm doing a 70 Camaro now but I absolutely love the styling of a 69 and 70 Mustang, by far the prettiest mustang ever made. IMHO, nice work

Finished the Passenger side and officially done with the rust repair in that area.

Started putting the front suspension on then found out Willwood now makes a 6 piston caliper for the front. The 4 pistons are going back and waiting on the new ones.

Needed to move it out to get the media blasting done. Turns out the dolly works great. LOL

The rear fender aprons were all that were left after putting in the MTF ifs system. They looked pretty beat up. I figured since I had changed out so much what was a couple other pieces.

I ordered both rear aprons and the Radiator core support. The passenger side came in, I had some time before dinner so I went ahead and put it in. It looks mich nicer. The drivers side and core support is on backorder.

Rebuilding parts out of filler, that should have been replaced is just wrong. I've seen a lot worse but you are going about it correctly. At least this area is much "easier" than the cowl repair.

You could sell the bondo on fleebay as a composite trunk patch kit lol.

Nice work

Tha ks Mike. There is a small fabric/bondo patch right on the tail light cutout that I found from the inside right behind the bumper support bracket. I REALLY don't want to replace the entire panel but I guess I will see how bad it really is when it gets media blasted.

The good news is e car is about 500#'s lighter getting all the bondo out. Should be a screamer.

The rest of the sheet metal came in today to finish the car as far as sheet metal work goes. The Mustangs to fear radiator support is a damned nice piece and fits like a glove. I literally just have it sitting there with nothing supporting it. Much more sturdy then the original. Thanks a ton to Rich and everyone up there at MTF. The T shirt was the perfect addition to my collection too.

I had to take a little break today from Mustang stuff to attend to aomething far more important. And to buy the Mrs. new SUV. My wife and I started a charity to benefit the Gary Sinise Foundation. Today we were in ited to the ground breaking ceremony for a special adapted home for a seriously wounded hero, Cpl Alan Babin. He was a medic in the Army, 82nd Airborne, and was shot in the gut while running towards gunfire to care for a wounded soldier in Iraq. 70 surgeries later, with 90% of his stomach gone, 2 years in a coma, meningitis, a massive stroke he comes out the other side a motivational speaker. It was an honor to shake his hand. Anyway, thought I would share. You can read about his story and his bronze star with a V for valor online.

Oh yeah, and here is the Mrs. New ride.

I'm glad to see someone else using the mustang to fear products. I live an hour from them and going to pick up my suspension in a few weeks. Great people to deal with.
Your car is looking great and glad to see all the detailed pics of your work. I think my coupe is in the same shape.

Suspension is a good thing. Hopefully I can get the brakes on in the morning before we leave.

I noticed that when replacing the trunk panel, you separated the connection from the frame rail to the rear valance? With the weight of the car on the leafs/frame? I was under the impression that you couldn't do that without the frame shifting? Is that not the case? My cougar needs the same repair and I didn't know how to go about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.

My car now has frame connectors which pretty much make it a one piece frame. Also the rear trunk brace was so badly rusted on that side that it had not been a co pkete piece for lord knows how long. Also if you look closely I have nit yet removed the entire section of trunk floor.

Thanks Mark, MTF has been awesome to work with.

I have bought 90% of my sheet metal from CJponyparts. I bought anything I could from Dynacorn and the fot has been 95% perfect on anything they have made. Its been a pain getting the rust out but everything has gone in pretty straight. The weld trough primer is nice also.

Got the rear support in today and the trunk floor fitted. I decided not to remove the entire passenger side trunk floor and cut the patch panel to fit and put a flange on it. To get the whole side out would require removing most of that side seat support. No thanks,

Woo freakin hoo. The last of the sheet metal has been welded in and the car is rust free......as far as I know, LOL. The trunk floor panel turned out great. It was a bunch of work but it is done and fit great. Tomorrow the media blast will be done on everything on the interior and in the engine compartment and frame rails. That will allow me to get it epoxied up. The oainter will take care of the rest including smoothingnthe firewall.

Got the car media blasted on the interior and from the firewall forward. Found a few new surprises, nothing major. Doors apparently had speakers in them at one point. I knew of the rust on the tailight panel on the passenger side. The "Bondo Ninja" struck again on the drivers side. How can a hole that big be full of Bondo.

Interior and all exposed metal from media blasting is Epoxy primed. It has been a little chilly but Sat. It hit 78 before dropping to 21 so I took the time to get it done. I coated the trunk with 3m undercoating and filled in a few areas I didn't like with All Metal. Started laying down some sound deadening material and got the tank ready with the pump and sending unit installed.

I also spoke to Michelle at MTF on Friday about an adaptor to go from power brakes booster to their Manual master. She told me there isn't one for the 70 but Rich was going to make one, "Rich always plans to make stuff" she said. Lol
I looked and couldn't find anyone who made one so I did it myself using a 3" by 18"x 1/4" piece of weld stock from Lowes. It turned out pretty well for doing it in my garage with only hand tools.

Yeah, for some reason when I moved them into a different album they dissapeared.

The album is set to public. You should be able to click on the picture and view the whole album. Here is the first pic. You should be able to go from here.

I noticed you moved the master cylinder up. Did you end up modifying the pedal ratio in doing so? Something to consider is if the pedal ratio is too high you may feel like you have spongy brakes because you have too much leverage on the master assuming everything else is the same prior to the master cylinder change.

Its been a productive couple of days. The fuel regulator, filter, and most of the lines are in, waiting on the UPS guy for the rest of the fittings. Quite a bit of cushion clamps left to get everything out of the way. I want as few wires under the hood as possible. I am going ro fab a piece of aluminum to cover the ECM. Brake proportioning valve is in along with the clutch master cylinder resevoir, (until I find a nicer one). Interesting enough I bought the only 2015, Manual, engine wiring harness available on the planet. Sometimes you poke around enough and get lucky. Started the painless wiring kit too. No wires under the carpets, all 100% hidden.

Took the family on a quick 5 day vacation to Pinta Cana so I haven't had much time. Was supposed to go to work today but wound up with a pretty nasty sinus infection whic doesn't go very well with flying so I used some sick time. Can't fly but I can work on Kate. I was worried about debris so I fabbed up an aluminum cover for the ECM.

And finally got my engine cover. It really cleans it up. Ordering everything ro finish to get it going (T-56, MTF headers and X pipe, MTF cold air intake, brake lines, etc.....), on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Hopefully I will get it together and ready for paint by the end of March and on the road in April.....hopefully of this year.

ARP pressure plate bolts don't like 50#'s even though that is what it calls for.

Hopefully tomorrow this will go in for the last time. Would have gotten it in tonight but I was missing a few starter bolts and really wanted to put the starter in before it gets crammed into the engine bay. Once it gets in I can order the drive shaft and then its down to plumbing and finishing the wiring. A punch out list will also be done tomorrow.

I had the power steering lines fabbed up yesterday and much of the plumbing is done. Tomorrow when the box from Summit gets here the plumbing will be done sans Heater and AC. The trans Support is in and it wen't fairly smoothly. Had to remove the Ebrake bracket but other than that it was an hour deal. Bought the trans slip yoke today and should have a driveshaft soon. Ready to add fluids and then wire up under the dash. Still need to settle on my exhaust. I guess its time to figure it out. I want as little drone as possible but with an old school muscle sound.

Exhaust went in so danged easy. Less than 45 minutes, by myself, with cutting 2 of the pipes to length. Still need to adjust and tighten it up. Going to clamp it till I can get it to a shop to put either a flange or vbands on it. I would definitely recommend this exhaust to anyone, incredible look and fit.

Engine ran fine but would not rev above idle. Sent the PCM to FRPP and they said it was bad. Sent out another no questions asked. Great customer service. Hopefully I will drive it, with goggles on, (LOL), this week.

https://youtu.be/EOezQ_UV6Gk New PCM came in but it still wouldn't rev above idle. Checked several things and the pedal was good, TPS was good but it was like it had no signal. Tracked down two wires, (both blue), to the pedal that were acting opposite of the way they should. A few calls to Ford Racing tech and they sent out a diagram. Sure enough pin 5 and 6 were backwards wired. Swapped the wires out, viola!

It sure felt good even without any glass in the car, dash or interior. This thing is a beast and I barely got on it.

Finished welding up the trans tunnel and the hushmat, (everywhere but under the drivers seat but its coming out to out carpet in). Then put the bulbs in the brake lights and suddenly realized I am finished with things I can do until it gets back from paint. Sooooo, next weekend it goes to my painter. Woo hoo.

I also ordered fold down rear seats and some new exterior stuff last night. Its amazing how fast it came together. At the end of last July I pulled the engine and trans to get started.

Let her outside to work on her tan after driving it around the neighborhood a few miles. The T-56 was a great move. Smooth as silk.

The original plan was a HOK candy Brandywine with ghost Boss 302 stripes but I have toned it down and am just going back to the original paint like it is now. The PO did a pretty rough job of the paint that is on it. Its going to look awesome when it is done.

Its been a busy week at work but I managed to get all the AC duct installed and most of the electrical hooked up. Stockpiling parts right now prepping for paint. My fold down seats came in today.

Unfortunately not much has happened recently. I have driven it around the neighborhood a few times. One smokey burnout. :)

I have been trying to find a paint and body shop with time but its been tough. Decided to go ahead and do the remaining sheetmetal work myself and get the body ready for paint. I can do most of it but there is no way I am gonna spray it. I took it to a buddies shop who does collision work to get some tips on what needs to be done first.

For the last several weeks I have been wracking my brain trying to find out what I did wrong putting this thing back together. The drivers side fender to door gap was perfect but the fender extension to hood was about 3/4" short on that side. Everything I did measured perfect but it didn't fit.

The. It hits you. I guess the previous owner had some alignment issues as well after the hood got dented on that side. How did he handle it. Cut out 3/4" of the drivers side fender, reshape it and bang it back on that side. Of course, cover it all in body filler and then paint. Smdh.

Didn't waste any time getting some metal removed.

That color will definitely be an eye-catcher. With that paint, the stock B-302 stripes will not do it justice, but the '70 style hockey stick theme will need to be incorporated, with a twist. I'm sure you'll design something very tasteful.

Looking great!!

Did a t56 from modern driveline. I bought the complete kit. With my MTF front suspension and cross member it sits the engine lower than most which allowed me to fit the t56 in with very little trimming of the tunnel. Basically I only had to trim out part of the tunnel brace and the shifter opening.

Hey Wayne, his Mustang is starting to look like your Camaro from a few years ago!

Great project and skills! I live just down the road from you in Steiner Ranch!

By the way, if you're still in need of a painter with a great reputation, good prices, and won't keep your car in paint jail for years, I've been introduced to one here in the Hill Country. Let me know if you need their contact information.

Got the full deivers side off. There was some pretty good rust to the skeletal section that will get replaced.

Melted out the lead and drilled out the spot welds. Also decided to go ahead and replace both outer wheel wells. The inners are in great shape. I was thinking to do the MTF mini tubs but after looking, I have a 295 on it now and it didn't rub. I still have a full inch on the inside before I would have an issue. Not sure the extra work is justified.

Had to leave for work last night but got a little progress done on the rocker. Not even close to having it off and it sucked. A bunch of media from the media blast was in the rocker. It was everywhere. I will have to do some repair on the b pillar, (rusted at the bottom outside, shocking, I know), but not too bad. Need to figure out how to get the front portion under the A pillar out now that I replaced all that already.

Gonna keep it Aztec Aqua? The car looks pretty solid. Lots of potential there. That color is the oem color of my 69. I'm not a fan myself, changing mine to a dark red much like my 11 mustang. I was following your previous effort, looking forward to this one now.

Yip, staying Aztec Aqua. I hated it at first but did it now.

Nice looking project! The color probably wouldn't be most peoples first choice but I kinda like it too and it's definitely different. I've painted way too many of them red so it's nice to see something besides that. My personal car was originally light Ivy yellow and although different I couldn't go that route again.

Its getting real. New Dart block bired 4.125 and stroked to 4.00 with Hbeam rods and all forged internals. TEA 240 Highports and Air gap intake. Figured I would stay old school this time.

I spend most of my time on VMF and just found your build thread here. So sorry to see the destruction from the fire and the loss of Kate. You were just about done and then you hit that fork in the road. I thought all the surprises left you by the PO were enough, then Mother Nature had to get involved.

I will make use of all that you did on Kate as I am putting a 2nd Gen Coyote in a 70 Mach 1. Your documentation on the wiring layout confirms what I was thinking regarding placement of the PCM.

I will follow your progress on Tiffany, looks like you are starting to have fun again.
