Looking good! What are the specs?
Travis Rankin
11-10-2005, 02:35 PM
Thanks!
The car is a '73 Toyota Celica, the suspension font and rear came from a 89 toyota supra turbo.. the motor is an 18rg 2 litre 4cyl.(Japan only) ported and polished with bigger valves dual Dellorto 40mm side draft carbs. hoping for 180 hp with a redline of 7500 rpm.

A friend of mine built one of those, didn't think it was anything special. Then he took me for a ride :3gears: OMG he put a very modified Grand National drivetrain in it. the car is scary fast and handles like a go-kart. ran a 11.20 at 125mph with street tires.

Looking good. I would be a little concerned about frame rigidity with those thin frame rails and no bracing. Are you doing multiple point tie-in's on the frame with a cage? If not a double frame rail may be a good idea...
Would hate for you to get out and have a ton of body flex after all that work.
Just trying to help out.
Travis Rankin
11-11-2005, 12:27 PM
Yah you bet.. It will be very rigid when it is done.
its just at its minimal, in order to get it all positioned and mocked up.
I've got about 1500 feet of 1.5" round tube in stock, a hydraulic tube bender and a tig welder just waiting to stick her all together.

I dont want it to look like added flares, but all the work will be done in the fender area outside of the top crease

And started the header...
Here I cut the original manifold down to use as a template on my pantagraph, to make an official template.
I cut out the holes in the thin guage material, then shaped the outside and the ports to be used in the pantagraph....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Then put the template in and cut out the header plate..

I always liked those body styles. I just had (about a year ago) a set of the TRD fender extentions for that body style. Looked like they would have worked perfectly for this. Hoshino racing wheels just look natural on these cars.

I was looking at the front suspension. Looks like you used a 87-88 Supra? I had thought about doing the same thing to my 73 Nova. But the front crossmember relationship to the wheel centerline was just to far off. You will never hurt that rear suspension. Those things are tough.

180 HP? MKIII turbo cars were 230+ right out of the box. I ran one with a 7M at 630+ at race tracks with no problems. Just put a gear driven diff in it and delrin bushings. The only real problem is they need to have the lower locating track arms replaced because they bend.

Oh you mean with your engine. Yeah you won't have any problems there. The front steering shock can be left off. Toyota ditched it from 89 on as it did not really do anything.

Nice fab work and cool project. I seen a few of these cars at the 28th st. cruse in Grand Rapids MI. nice cars but nothing like yours will be. I like the fact that you made the muffler I am planing on making Nascar style mufflers for my car that exit in front of the rear wheels.

Travis - Sorry, Im just a guest on this one, but I love the Pantograph you made (or I assume you made it). Could you post some pictures of it and maybe some details on its design? It appears that you've come up with a system to trace the item with a ?nail? above the cutting surface so that its easier for you to manipulate. I'd love to see more about it.
Thanks -
This little car is going to wicked when it's done. I'm loving it.

Stripping the paint and getting things positioned to get the look I want...
cutting the roof down a bit here...

I am using stock glass.. except I am eliminating the trim and rubber seal.. the edge of the body will be reworked a little bit to bring the finished painted edge to a 3/16" gap to the glass.. and then the glass edge is polished, the first inch of glass will get black matrix paint on the inside so you can't see the glue, and then the glass is urethaned in.. the glass is then flush and smooth with the body.. just like how new cars are done... the one that comes to mind off hand is the back quarter glass on the new mustangs.. if you start looking at new cars you'll see what I mean..
The roof is cut 1/2" down and moved a 1/4" back in the back to give the right distance from top to bottom for the glass... and the front it dropped 1 1/2" roughly in the front and it went back with the arc and the fact that it was moved back as well.. this gives me the lay back and the proper gaps top and bottom for the front glass.. the arc of the glass and the stock opening don't quite stay paralell in the front though, so it will be made to fit with sheet metal. and the sides filled in.. in addition I have to build up a ledge for the glass to get glued to, at the proper height to make it flush.
The back quarter glass will work it just won't have to wind all the way up in order to meet the rubber.. the door glass will have to be ground down to fit... VERY carefully mind you, as it is tempered... I found the best way it with a flap wheel grinding disk on a grinder.. takes a long time but it works without shattering it..
Anyone have a better method??

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to shaping sheet metal (in a constructive manner), but it appears to me that you widened the original sheet metal. Can you give me a quick explanation of how you did it? Just the nut shell version, not a full tutorial.

I just cut down behind the door jam, by the bumper and the inner wells out and just kind of pulled it all out by hand.
I had to pull the pillar in behind the door though as it wants to pull out when you stretch the quarter.
