View Full Version : Alternative to PSC resrvoir when running Corvette steering pump and hydroboost?

I'm using the factory Corvette steering pump location on my Ls3. It's high up on the drivers side of the motor. The car has hydroboost and am experiencing noise which would be solved (I'm told) by running a proper reservoir instead of the factory GM one. The PSC reservoir is very tall and there is no place it can be mounted high enough where it would satisfy the proper feed tube angle required for the pump. The car this is in is a 71 Firebird. The only 2 things I can come up with are lose the hydroboost or the accessory drive. I'd rather not do either. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

The reservoir is:

are you sure that is it or did you plumb your return wrong? Mine works great and i have the same setup

I agree it is the return line should be lower within the fluid line. When I called, I was told I needed a hydroboost specific reservoir because of the noise I'm experiencing.

Do you have a pic of your setup?

Under what conditions do you experience noise; normal driving, autocrossing, etc?

I have been running the same setup for about 4 years have had no issues/noises with it. Also your return line should tee into the factory return line and not directly into the reservoir. Who is telling you that you need a special reservoir?

See the pic on this page. http://www.hydratechbraking.com/tech.html

I had noise when using the T. All the time. When I plumbed it into the reservoir, it got much quieter. I get a wallowing pretty consistently. Look at the note in the diagram. I was told by Hydratech several months ago that the preferred method is directly into the reservoir.

I wonder what has changed as Hydratech told me years ago the preferred method was the T, otherwise I would have issues. Regardless something doesn't add up as icemanrd19 and myself have the same setup using the T with no issues/noise. What steering gearbox are you using? Are you sure you have enough fluid in the system? Did you raise the front wheels and rotate the steering wheel the work the air out of the lines?

Did all that. DSE gear box. The fluid is what was recommended by Turn One steering. Before that, it was OEM GM steering fluid from the service department. I've had the hydroboost for years and the T has always been listed as an optional, but not preferred method. I did originally run the T.

Just looked and it's Redline steering fluid.

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm currently looking at running a Hydratech hydroboost along with a Wegner acc drive setup. Casey Wegner recommended I look at the PSC reservoir as it is plumbed for the 2 return lines. He also said he could supply the acc drive kit with a hi-flo PS pump with AN fittings to work with the reservoir and hydrotech unit. The information I got was noise was a problem when trying to use a stock PS pump and reservoir as it didn't have enough flow or fluid capacity. I was hoping this would be the solution, but now I'm worried about whether I can place it high enough as required? Anyone else running this setup or similar?

For the heck of it, I plumbed the return line from the hydroboost below the fluid level near the bottom of the flat area you can see in the above pic of the reservoir. Not on the downward angled portion. Unfortunately, I needed a new reservoir to do this as I didn't want to plug the hole I made previously. Luckily, I have no more odd noises that I can tell. The car is somewhat loud to begin with, but I don't hear anything coming from this area like I did before.

I found this picture in another thread with the remote reservoir mounted near the radiator, and still above the PS pump. Since you moved the spot down on your reservoir and it seemed to keep everything quiet, it may be why the PSC res has all 3 AN fittings at the bottom?

I looked into doing that as well and it still would not have placed the reservoir high up enough to satisfy the requirements in the instructions. That motor looks low in whatever car that is while the core support is higher than in my car.
