I know this is way pre-mature, but I would very much appreciate thoughts on what I would need. Additionally, while the engine is out what upgrades and work should be done to it.

I have a complete running LS6 with every goodie you can think of. Will any of it transfer over?

If if I convert to wet sump, what kind of market does the dry sump system have? The LS7 will a complete pull-out.

There's lots of guys who would have interest in ls7 stuff...as for what swaps over... headers and as far as I know the accessories.... Valve covers... Valley pan ...NOT THE INTAKE...

How about my clutch and flywheel? I have a new twin I would like to reuse if possible

If you convert to wet sump, the oil pan will work, and all front accessories, headers, and valve covers like Ryan said.

Valley pan will NOT work as they're a different shape.

The flywheel & clutch will also work.

Thanks Dale, I would like to buy the conversion kit from SD parts, but are there other sources? Possibly by pieces?

If the pan and accessories fit, I would leave it dry sump. I can imagine you'd only need a tank and the plumbing then.

I will have it all. I could run the dry sump, if I can figure out how to mount the tank in my 70 camaro. Wet sump seemed like the easy way to do it

I would keep it dry sump and do whatever it takes to make it fit, oil system reliability is a huge deal when your hitting corners hard, that's why gm put it there in the first place. That being said I sold a new take out (crate engine) dry sump set up minus tank for 600 bucks. Probably could have held out for more but I wanted it gone.

How much power do you have now and how much more are you looking for?

Right now my ls1 makes 450 rwhp, I'm sure the ls7 will make that stock, but I'm leaning towards atleast a cam. 500+ to the wheels. I wasn't even looking to buy an engine this soon, one just kind of presented itself so I will be looking to throw it in asap to recoup some money by selling the LS1

Personally I would keep what you have there is definitely more power left in that ls1 especially if your only looking for 500+ to the tire. With the smaller cubic inches you'll have to turn it more rpm than an ls7 but then you can put more gear in the car and won't have to worry about modulating the throttle coming off corners because your making all that bottom end with 427 inches. It will make the car easier to drive for sure. I don't know how cheap your getting the ls7 for but you would probably save a lot just upgrading what you got.

Just out of curiosity can you post your current engine specs?

Jordon .....go look at his other thread posts ...you'll see the info....DO NOT RUN THE STOCK DRY SUMP TANK I can't remember what year the motor is and what year gm made some changes but the tank has a few design flaws .... I have a destroyed ls7 in the garage do to this ... avaid makes some parts which can be used to upgrade it if you decide to stick with it . I'd recommend doing your homework and checkout their website

My ls1 is pretty maxed out. With the exception of doing more internal mods and aftermarket heads.

Stock block/internal LS1
Fast 102 intake
Fast 92mm tb
CAI by Spectre
PRC cnc ported/larger valve LS6 heads/milled .020
TSP 228r cam
SLP oil pump and dual chain
DSE headers
ATI 10% balancer
36lb injectors
85mm MAF
SLP t-stat
Trunnions upgrade

= 460 on the chassis dyno and probably $7k bucks or so

lS7
= I picked up for $5500 and same power in stock form.

It is a tough call when you consider the work involved to swap engines. I kind of hate the lack of lowend grunt. I'm told the LS7 is designed to spin to 7,000? Mine ls1 tops out at 6700-6800.

Ooooh yea that's a good deal, for that cheap I'd ditch the ls1 for sure! Recoup some money from the sell of the old motor (I wouldn't take it out till it's sold) but for the price of a computer tune and all that for the ls7 i would throw a carb on it, especially if your going to hop it up some later. Fuel injection is cool but for to me a hot rod doesn't have to get good gas mileage and paying a couple hundred bucks for a tune every time I changed something stacks up pretty quick.

I have used the LS3 version. No issues, car started on first crank. Just be sure to follow the instructions for locating the MAF sensor. It's not the prettiest harness but works fine.

I assume you have the stock LS7 heads and cam. Otherwise the tune will not be right.

Scoggin Dickey or Jegs are reasonably priced. The controller kit- we use those on most of our LS swaps when going with crate engines.

Regarding the dry sump, put an Aviaid baffle in the pan and run a Peterson tank if possible. Or the C6 tank and an Aviaid baffle inside that.

Any tips or thoughts getting a tank into a sec gen?
