1966 Impala Big "front " brake kits ? CPP vs Baer

Need help deciding from the experts here on PT. Both of these kits will be using the same 2" drop spindle. The CPP kit is quite a bit cheaper but if the Baer kit is that much better. I don't mind spending the extra money if it is worth it.

I have dealt with both companies and tech support is nice to have. Baer is miles ahead in that department. Baer also puts out a top quality product.

I am leaning towards CPP because of price. I also like that factory PBR C15 caliper they use. I think the rotors are thicker also.

No way will I touch anything CPP. Just search for their poor customer service anywhere. If you're just price shopping, expect to get what you pay for.

I'd be surprised if the rotors where thicker than 1.1" like the Baer. The fact that I just tried to find out the thickness but could not tells you something about the product.

I am not opposed to companies offering a product that uses offshore sources for parts but if you do a search on brake upgrades you will find that many end up with performance that did not meet expectations. Many times this is attributed to the fact the combo is not matched but it still happens.

Lets take a step back and attempt to make sure you do this right the first time. What master are you using? What are your plans for the rear? What are the goals for the car?

This is just a driver that is still all original . it still has the single master and 4 drums on it now. I just want to convert to power front disk and leave the rear drums alone. I have 18"inch wheels on it now so I thought it would be nice to put some big brakes on it now that I have the space to fill. I have talked to Baer about there kit and my application. My plan was to get there front wheel kit and then use a factory style booster/master from CPP with there combination valve. The person at Baer said for what was doing that would work fine but of course if I needed to do any fine tuning I would need an adjustable proportioning valve. Then later I found the CPP big brake kit and I got me thinking.

I have to say. the more i look at the SSBC kit the better it looks.
Does anybody here have any experience with SSBC brakes ?

Look at using a Corvette '65-82 spindle(later have larger outer bearing) and caliper set up. They fit behind 15" Vette Rally wheels and might be a better match braking if you keep drum on the rear.

I was wanting to use the 2" drop spindles that these kit provide. I have a spring in the car right now that I would prefer not to cut but I want to bring the front down 2".

never mind on the SSBC Kit.

I called and they can not ship that kit anymore. They do no have a source for the drop spindle and longer.

When out and did some measuring on my wheels. Looks like with the Baer I am going to have to run a small spacer (1/8") to clear the caliper face. Those things are massive compared to the others.

I can tell you the CPP kit are cast iron, two piston, truck calipers off a Silverado. Factory replacement re-painted as CPP. You will have very limited pad selection if you ever want a performance pad. How do i know? I had them and they worked ok, but after two track days the rotors started cracking etc. Smart of you to ask the forum. Wish I had.

I recently installed a Baer kit on my Cougar and I am very impressed with the quality of the components as well as the after sale support that I have received.
