How come I have never seen a cage attached to the roof of the car? I know the roof material is thin but couldnt the cage attach to the pillars and pick up the roof in a few places? It would free up some room and stiffen the car.

??????????

You could also just upholster over the whole thing.

I bought a '64 Chevelle 2-dr wagon project done this way... I never finished it, and I sold it on ebay a few months ago... It looked cool as hell the way the cage was almost completely hidden if you weren't looking for it. I don't know why it's not done more often though???

people are lazy and want to take the easy way out. just bend the tubes roughly to shape not worrying about how long they are and welding them in...

but on the other hand a cage farther from the pillars/roof makes it easier to install factory interior pieces.

Track tech requires the tubes to be welded all the way around. It is very difficult to do this and attatch the roof to the tubes.

Thanks.

I figured if yoou did it this way you do custom headliner, etc.

I guess you could weld around the tube and then fit it, but what a pain.

Dirk,
FYI, the #80 has tabs that connect the corners of the roof and pillars to the cage. While not stiff enough on it's own, the roof and pillars add a bunch of stiffness to a limited cage. When do I get those pics of your ride?

Jenson Sorry , I will get on it tonight. I am developing C.R.S.

you can attach it like we do on rally cars, you fit the cage, drill holes in the floor, drop the cage down, weld the top and then put the mounting plates over the holes.

I like it! Gotta remember this for my install!

I remember when cars where cut in half to fit a cage...

I thought this was standard practice for a tight fitting cage? How do most people weld the top of their cages without doing this? I've never installed a cage before, and will be within the next few months, so I'm wondering?

21st Century Street Machines in developing a cage that ties directly to the "A" pillars with a cover that eliminates the factory "A" pillar cover on first gen Camaros.

Ralph, who is gonna do your cage?

Me, myself and I, lol. I'm either going start with a 10pt kit and modify it too my needs (i.e. add bars -- I want to do some things not found in kits like sill bars in additon to the door bars, a diagonal and horizontal rear bar(s) on the main hoop, etc.) or I'll get a tubing bender and scratch build one. I'll know for sure what I'm doing within the next month or so, as we're going to be starting bodywork around then or sooner. And soon after the bodywork, 3-link install, then cage.

Ralph We should talk, I may help you a day or two so I can learn a little for my cage. Do you have all the tools to do the whole thing in house?

Our cage is almost invisible from a front view of the car. The cage is much further along since the photo above and has had all the bodywork done to it and it is beautiful. I will see if Ed will let me put up some pictures of it.

Take a look at many road racing cars and you will find the a-pillar bar and frequently the b-pillar as well tied into the pilar with sheetmetal with lightening holes.

Wow, that looks fantastic. Very clean.

My only question would be if it would pass tech like that?

I am more interested in how complicated the headliner is going to be.

I don’t know if would pass tech inspection like this. It would pass in it original state before we added all the filer panels and did the finish work.

We won’t know much about the head liner until we make one that wont be until some time in January. I will put up some pictures of it when we get to that point.

thank you for the info, that cage looks great.

I always assumed you would have to ditch the stock headliner and have an interior guy cover a cage built like this.

You might not pass tech just because they cant see the welds.?

Cool, thanks. I was figuring either Evo or STi, but I'm not real familiar with those cars. Besides the cage, I like the interior, Mitsu did a good job.

Yes, it's an Evo.

Here is an STi cage. Same builder, TC Design Fab in San Jose.

That is a serious cage, they do nice work. Any idea what class that cage is spec'd for? From what I can see it far surpasses the slower SCCA / NHRA tech.

The Evo was built for a NASA 25 hr race at Thunderhill. The finished 3rd. 659 laps of the 3.1 mile circuit. The chassis was built by Tony Collicio (TC) of TC design Fab. and driven by Csaba Csere (Editor-in-Chief, Car and Driver magazine), Gary Sheehan (Grand Am, USTCC), Dave McEntee (ALMS LMP2, ALMS GT), Dale Sievwright (USTCC), Auston Harris (Formula TR), and Marco Romani (BMW CCA Club Racing).
