Do you need to have the vent windows installed to get a good panel alignment ?? My initial thought is no since a 68 is basically the same without the vent windows installed. So forgive me if this is a dumb question.

I dont think so, but some experts are free to say otherwise. Im still working on mine, and after getting it lined up i put in the vent in to check alignment and it floated (never touched the a-pillar).
I think that it has some free movement and the weatherseal closes any gaps.

Thanks. I talked to a few 67 owners and they say just get the back edge (quarter panel) and the rockers aligned and the rest should be ok.

Not really that necessary. There will be a small amount of adjustability with the vent windows, so it's not a big deal. But the hard limit will be the sheetmetal, that will dictate where the doors have to be. Hood width will dictate fender width, which will dictate door location in/out of the jambs.
