View Full Version : Suggestions for race seats 67 camaro
Anyone have real world preference for protour race seats, I am looking for advise on adjustable back seats, I am 6feet tall, 34 waist, 200lbs, and have no way of trying out fit of seats before buying.....so any help is appreciated. The car is a 67 convertible camaro and will have a roll bar and side door bars.

One thing that bothers me about aftermarket adjustable-back seats is that there is no standard for construction. I even called Recaro to find out if there was such a thing, and I was told no. For this reason I took seats out of a production car. There are a lot of good options out there, and even the most expensive ones typically are cheaper than aftermarket options. Here's a list to get you started looking:
S2000
Evo
WRX, STi
Prelude
RSX
several VW models had optional recaros over the years
I would avoid anything too new as it will have airbags built in. Also note that seats from sedans will not flip forward to allow access to the rear seats in your car.

I'm 6ft 35in waist and 200lbs. I have a pair of Sparco EVO III seats and have been very happy with them. They are a bit spendy but very strong. I had a pair of Cipher seats and they are very cheap china made seat that started falling apart within 6 months of installing them.

Sparco Chrono Road for me, 6'5" and 235.
Over the past 3 weeks, I've put 2300 miles on them without one complaint. Very supportive and comfortable to me.

I have corbeau. Kinda cheaply made.
My 69 rarely gets driven and the side bolsters are more blown out than they should be

I put a set of high back race type buckets in my 67 vert several years ago. They looked "funny" to me with the top down, so I took them out and sold them. I'd look for a low back seat with adjustable headrest.

Race seats or made to sit driver straight up and harness to hold him in place, upright. Because of this they also tend to cause your body to submarine forward under the seat belts, hence the use of 5 or 6 pt belts to prevent this. Leaning the back of seat backwards out of the upright position greatly increase the probability of your body trying to submarine forward under the belt in a crash.
2nd problem for us in US is finding 4/5/6 point belts that are street legal per US safety laws, that require all seat belts used in street driven cars to have seat belts that have one thing in common, they have a Red Seat Belt Release Button so that Rescue personal or average Joe knows how to extricate you out of those belts as quickly as possible, without having to think or figure out how to do that, just mash that Red Button on them and your free.
Good write up about subject in Safety Equipment section of Forum on subject.
By the way, your waist size in most cases, isn't the most common fitment problem, it's your shoulder and hip size fitment, and seat needs to fit snug enough to keep your body in an upright position, no side to side movement, unless your installing race seats for the Cool Factor Look.
PS: Hope your roll bar will be a 4 PT with side bars since the race seats are going in a Vert where there is no metal roof to help car slide on it's top . With a cloth top, bar will be more likely to dig in or hang on something and bend in a roll over.
Thanks for all the input, in regards to rollbar, yes it will be a 4 point , with cross member for belts, as well as side bars, the only reason I am considering race seats is so I don't contact the bar in a collision, I can see the stock low backs being an issue, as for the back seat NO one will ever be in it and the bar set up will insure that's yhe permanent case. The car has ls3, full tci suspension and proper brakes, I don't want to miss on the safety any more than I do on the handling or power.
I am big guy...5'11" and 280lbs...and have developed a fairly anal sense of seat and pedal position over the years. I have used Cerullo, Sparco, Cipher, Recaro, stock seats, and a few generic copies. My first choice [by a lot] is Recaro...in either the fixed hardshell Profi XL, or the adjustable back styles like the CS Sportster or the Specialist. They are expensive for a reason. Personally, I won't use anything else.
Sparcos are good as well, especially if you are on a budget...they just are not as "great" as the Recaros. I like the Cerullos for a street car...very comfy, but for a big guy in a car that may see lots of lateral G forces, they are not as robust as the Recaros. I still have Cerullos in my GSX. That car will see "casual" autocross action...but not the pounding that our other cars see.
OEM seats, Cipher, or other generic copies...don't bother.
ALSO...it is a significant and deliberate effort to get any aftermarket seat properly mounting in these musclecars, especially in a Gen 2 Camaro. The trick is to get them absolutely as low as possible [remember to leave room for a helmet] and as far back as possible [nobody will be in the back seat anyway]. I will also tell you that no one [that I have found yet] makes an acceptable bolt-in mounting bracket. They all either place the seat too high, too far forward...or don't fit anything. I will also add that we have recently developed a mounting plate for a Recaro adjustable back seat using the Recaro sliders that places the seats as I think they should be placed...low and rearward. I have not decided if we will actually put those in production, but potentially could, depending on demand.
Seat, pedal, and steering wheel placement is way more important that what most people think...spend the time to get it right. You and your hotrod will be much happier for the effort.
BTW...when I referred to OEM seats above, I was thinking about the OEM Camaro/Chevelle seats. There are likely some new car OEM seats that could be decent, I just haven't used any yet. Typically, new car oem seats are large and heavy...and don't fit well in the older cars, but I am sure there are exceptions.
