Hey guys, I'm looking for a "recipe" for 400-430hp. I have a 350 small block Chevy and in the future I'm planning to pull it out, rebuild it and install it back into the car with a 4 speed. My budget is 3,500-4K. I know I will possibly have to bore it out 0.030 which will make it a 355 which isn't a problem. Thanks-Justin

Think 383 stroker!

I started with a 4 bolt main 350 2pc rear seal block and installed a complete Scat 383 forged stroker rotating assy with flat top pistions, Edlebrock retrofit hydraulic roller cam kit #22015 and a pair of RHS 210 72cc aluminum heads then topped it off with an Edelbrock Victor Jr intake and Atomic throttle body EFI. It makes just a little north of 500hp. When you bury your foot it goes and yet it is very streetable.

+2 on 383. Built one for my 72 El C. I am so impressed with the difference that all future builds will be strokers .

Guess I'll jump in here as well. X3- 383 stroker with 6 speed. Very nice!

I port cylinder heads and build engines so I know first hand how quick a parts bill can add up. I did a cheap street 350 for a guy that made 450. It was a very basic build; hyper pistons, stock rods with arp bolts (tho you can upgrade to a scat I beam with a floating pin and spend about 40 bucks more by the time you have the bolts, resized the big end and pins pressed on and off...) stock crank, vortec heads with stock valves and bowl work, rpm air gap intake and a roller thumper cam (this was a factory roller cam block)

You got to be careful with a budget as tight as yours (depending on how much of the parts you already have) stuff adds up quick! Rockers, valve train, pushrods, ignition, wires, machine work... People usually price the big ticket items and forget all the smaller things that make a big difference in cost.

Head and cam choice will make or break your combination. I just added GM fastburn heads to my 383 in the off season along with a custom grind cam and those two changes bumped me from 430 ft lb\ 340 hp to 525 ft lb\467 hp. This is with 9.7:1 compression, dual plane intake and a quadrajet. Watch your local roundy round racing classifieds for a set of used fastburns from a blown up crate engine and go from there.

I have a over 11k 383 for sale. Look in the parts sale section for the add. I can bring it to LA if your serious.

Also this is my daily driver, but I want to be able to take it to the strip, so I need it to run on 91.

Or save up some money and do a LS swap...

https://www.airflowresearch.com/dyno.php do you guys think that these "combos" will actually put out this power. And can someone point me in the direction of a pump gas friendly bottom end rotating kit. Thanks guys the car will be out of the shop soon for me to post pictures!!!

With a $4.000 budget and your goal of 430hp on a manual trans, forget the 383. You can make that power no problem in a 355 and you wouldn't have to buy an all new rotating assembly.

Like already mentioned, much of the recipe is in the heads and cam. AFR 180cc Eliminators would kick ass, but they are a premium priced head. Talk to Eric Weingartner @ http://www.wengines.com/SBCweingartner.htmlfor a good set of Pro-Filer heads. Now you have $ 2.850 left. Vortec heads are a cheaper option but they need machine work to handle performance valve lifts.

Yes, the small things are the "hidden cost" of engine building. Once you're done with bearings, gakets, spark plugs, ignition, rockers etc $4.000 isn't a whole lot.

You gotta share more of what you have though, we don't know what's on your current engine. If this is a bone stock smogger engine, it's gonna be tight or you'll have to do some good deals and boneyard finds. An assembled crate long block might be a better option.
