Hello

I have been building this truck slowly ovee the last few years and have been racing it some. I figured now is the time to start a build thread as things are starting to pick up and get good with this build.

Things start out with a 79 c10 with a 5.3l 4l80e. Basic mods on engine to include a Z06 cam, springs, decked heads, long tubes, etc.
The suspension was zed in the front 3" with 2.5" drop spindles, one cpil cut on moog 6454 springs, 1 ton front sway bar, and 17x8 rims with 255/40r17 615ks that are basically slicks now. The rear has an axle flip, c notch, relocated shocks to stand them upright, a long panhard bar, 17x8s with 255/40r17 615ks.

The truck handles great with the exception of having absolutely no traction and a tad underpowered. I am consistently running about 6-8 seconds behind the leaders in the CAM-T class. So im thinking with some tires and some creative suspension mods i should be getting closer.

The plans: not really revealing full details yet but i have purchased an 06 crown victoria front crossmember and have called Ron Sutton to get some parts quotes. Here are some pictures of how it sits currently

Awesome Bryan! The beast seems to handle pretty good already, what are the major advantages of the Crown Vic other than the rack?

Mtrhd329

I agree for what it is there is almost no body roll and it sticks well and rides well. I am plagues with being HEAVY! and all you other CAM cars are about 1000# lighter than i. So the plan was to remove weight and/or move fromt wheels forwards to better distribute that weight if it cant be removed. After going back and forth with ideas and bench racing with my sponsor Current Performance in El Cajon Ca, we decided that a crown vic crossmber would be an easy swap. It is LIGHT (i can pick it up) where the crossmember i have now i can barely pick up without any suspension pieces bolted to it. Plus it comes with a rack and disc brakes and coilovers. And since this is a fairly modular design it would be simple to make a tube front end for it at the same time to land the ride height and suspension geometry where i want it exactly. No more hodge podge parts. I feel i can design this to accept an 18x10 rims with say....285 35 18s fairly easy. Plus withy steerimg box out of the way i can move the crossmber forward and help get some weight on the rear tires.

I like the "Recycled Racing" sticker on the windshield. Mind if i copy that some time?

For the weight problems:
- glass or carbon fibre hood and bumper
- punch "speed" holes into the inner structures of the fenders and core support (use a punch for sink mixer taps, these make nice clean holes and are pretty cheap to aquire)
- relocate the battery, loose battery tray
- replace copper rad with an aluminum version

You could aswell put some weight into the rear of the bed... like 3/8" steel plate bolted to the bed floor. Needs a bit more HP to move it around but it's an option to shift weight...

Mtrhd329
03-25-2016, 06:34 AM
Sure you can use that. It was something i came up with since all my parts are recycled from the junkyard or craigslist. No bigh dollar build here.

Ive cut almost 250# off the truck since my last trip to the scales. I removed 30# from the hood by cutting all the bracing out. 25# from gutting the core support. Cut the fenders down to just the outer skin, removed outer bumper brackets, etc. I also had put a fleet side bed in place of the wood bed to add some weight back there.

Fuel tank in the back?
On my Dodge i can use the fuel tank of the Ramchargers and mount that way behind the rear axle.

Is your 5.3 an all aluminum block or the iron version?

Mtrhd329
03-25-2016, 03:31 PM
Yes the fuel tank is out back. On the c10s we can run a blazer tank in the rear frame rails. That is the setup i have. Block is an iron block. I would love to switch to an aluminum block but its not in the cards right now. Maybe down the road once i have no other weight reducing options.

my truck is torn down right now hoping to borrow some tips from you and mtrhead to make my truck a great driver and ok autoxer. how many leafs are you running in the rear right now?

Dr G
03-28-2016, 02:40 PM
Ive cut almost 250# off the truck since my last trip to the scales. I removed 30# from the hood by cutting all the bracing out. 25# from gutting the core support. Cut the fenders down to just the outer skin, removed outer bumper brackets, etc. I also had put a fleet side bed in place of the wood bed to add some weight back there.
The scale report shows your truck weighs more than 4000 lbs. I am curious where all that mass is located. When I got my '56 F100 back from a prior builder back in 2010 it weighed 2960 lbs. I am not joking. But that was with no bumpers and no bed floor. With that stuff added, plus the mass of a fuel injection manifold, eight ignition coils etc. and a bunch of sound proofing I'm still around 3300 lbs. Why would there be such a large difference. Were the body panels thicker on the later trucks?

Mtrhd329
03-28-2016, 03:38 PM
2roundko-

Im running 4 leafs. #1,2,3,5 per the Make it handle thread

DrG- i think curb weight depending on options are around 3800-4000. That weight was with my 275# fat butt in it. I think the frames are thicker between your model and mine and some thicker panels maybe. I was surprised to see such a difference in curb weights also.

kingcrunch
03-30-2016, 01:33 PM
Reviewing your weight chart i don't think you can pull a lot more weight without replacing larger components with lighter stuff, like fenders and the hood, the bumper...
You could have your hood and fenders acid dipped to reduce weight. I don't know if that still can be done...

Mtrhd329
03-30-2016, 02:49 PM
I agree. I have already removed the inner hood bracing and the inner fender structure and some other basic weight reduction mods. Thats why im going towards a frame build and crossmember swap. I have also been toilying with cutting out the firewall and floor and making it all aluminum panels. The cab is 600# with no doors or seats. It will get down to 3000# somehow.....

Have a look at the parts of http://www.usbody.com/
I am thinking about buying a hood from them.

I have been looking for fiberglass parts for a while now but my bidget is extremely small for this build so thats not.happening for a while. All of my purchases will be craigslist or ebay for a while. But slowly aelling my extra parts for the 3 link build so maybe i will have some left over. I got.my hood down from 78 to 44# now so thats a start.

kingcrunch
04-01-2016, 01:31 PM
Do you still run the copper rad?
And what about aluminum wheels?
Replacing the heavy steelies with aluminum wheels should decrease your trucks nose weight a bit and improve the handling a bit as well (less unsprung weight).

Mtrhd329
04-02-2016, 06:42 AM
King crunch- yes that is a wing of sorts. Made from some old riot shields i had laying around. Mostly a gag but the came out decent. I have an aluminum radiator and have switched out two of the cragars for some mustang rims which helped some. I would Love aluminum rims but they are pricey.

Tom- truck felt good. Rear grip out performed the front so after two laps i was pushing everywhere. Need more 18s and some re71s all around, but that will be after CAM challenge. Heres a vid of my first run.

Video from yesterday. Won the CAM-S class. Times were competitive to other classes also. Most were in the 50s, my best was 56. Not bad for a truck. This run was smooth and felt great. It really felt slow to me but i was looking out ahead and decided to give it everything. I think i might need to get a radio in this pig because i remember driving a whole lot ballsier when i was cranking metal. Ok tom here is the video.

Looks like tons of fun!
What did you do to the steering? It looks like it turns pretty quickly for - i assume - a saginaw type steering box.
Low ratio box?

Mtrhd329
04-03-2016, 10:08 AM
Its a saginaw box. A newer one from the 81-87 trucks. Turns ok. But in the cab im working the wheel. I need quicker turns.....

Idea:
Have the fenders sand blasted, like several times. If they use a coarse abrasive, it'll remove quite some material. Especially in the "vent areas" on the lower corners :lmao:

Mtrhd329
04-04-2016, 02:21 PM
Ha. Those are......fender vents.....haha. never really started any body work on this thing. Not really a priority. But with the future plans we have been thinking over it might become a large part of the next build phase. I would imagine there is at least two coats of paint in this thing olus the rattle can job i put on. Should be a decent amount of weight coming off if i strip it. I got it scaled at the impound after my runs on saturday and i was happy with my results so far.

Front and rear scales are opposite. I al NOT happy with my wheel base numbers. 117" i measured. Minimum is 100 i think. I am pushing to make it a lot smaller here shortly. And some pics...

How were the Kooks?

Mtrhd329
04-04-2016, 04:27 PM
Very predictable and would not break loose. I also found that 615ks handle well once you take all the tread off. I was able to stick fairly well. I put some good speed to the truck and it didnt phase it. Well it pushed a little with th 615k slicks on it but the rears were awesome!!!

Tomswheels
04-05-2016, 07:51 PM
Cool, the kooks tend to like heat and the 615k likes cool, so you may find depending on temp one works better than the other. For the Summer you may want to see if you can find some used kooks for the front...

Thanks for the kind words. Ill definately provide some interesting low budget ideas. Today i got my 17x10.5" mustang rims mounted with some 255 40 17 rs3s. Why not a 285 or 315 or somwthing with such a wide rim? Well performanc tires in 17" are not easy to come by. Also sidewall flex is important also. I bought 255s since they were cheap and popular and then 10.t" rims to match my back rims. When i put them together there was an inch on either side of the rim outside of the rubber. I got scared to say the least. Then i started looking around and saw that tires wider than rims are not winning. A few cars even had the tires slightly streched and they said it was reduce sidewall roll. Seemed like a decent idea to try to put those 255s on my rims. Mounted them up and i have to say they look pretty good. Got them on the crossmember so now i can set ride height and get some measurements taken and start cutting frame rails.

Spent a little bit in the garage today. Got my crossmember bolt sleeves cut and the holes in the rails drilled out. Found out my old black and decker doesnt like to work hard. It fought me and started spraying chucks of the motor brushes out so i had to go get a new craftsman drill. Bout a ****ty hole saw and burned that up fast. So i was left with wallowing out the holes with an old 5/8 drill bit.

Got my second layer of 2x3 on the rails to tie in to the crossmember supports. I will weld it all up tomorrow once i can bolt it down so it wont twist when hot

Got the front all welded up and started mocking up my LCA rear mounts. Going to have to drop a plate down about 2" from the frame to land them correctly and cant decide if a piece of 2x3 will be strong enough. Need some more vodka to think on that a while. Got my middle frame section tacked up to th front and some 2x3 layed in place. Need to clearance a little more so it lines up inside the rail and make some transition pieces where it drops down. My plan is to turn the 2x3 on its side to help gain ground clearance and once its welded up to cut the bottom of the rails off. I was also thinking with the cage it should be a little stronger. I was thinking a board lying flat would be harder to twist that a board on its side. Especially with some structure above it. Sounds great in my head. We will see how the idea works out once i get my cage in. The cage will be a jegs 12 point and should be here in a few days.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/05/20160509_144144_zpsqsqm5ogq-1.jpg (http://s134.photobucket.com/user/wells_329/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160509_144144_zpsqsqm5ogq.jpg.html)

I am going tomorrow to get a used cab. Plan to mount that to the frame by building an outer frame rail out of some 1x2 and welding another piece to the pinch weld. This will allow me to bolt the cab to the frame and if need be pull it off over the cage. This will also allow me to take out the complete floor, firewall, and rear wall below the window and replac with aluminum. Hopefully saving some weight since my last cab weighed in just shy of 600# without doors.

Got the rear rails measured out and welded on. Put the rear axle in olace ad started trying to decide how i am going to make my 3 link bars. I bought 4ft length for each bar but im thinking i will only be able to use 3ft on either side. I need to get the cab on and the engine in beforr i can really figure out how to make a crossmember for the frame side of the lower links bars. Heres a picture of the mockup stages.

Truck looks good! Looks like you have a good idea of the way to go. I would add a one ton sway bar to the front. My crossmember sits about where yours is with a 3" z w.5" spindles, springs. My front stays flat in a corner. Be careful with 305s on the front it might wanna push going into a corner. You can tune that though.
For the rear i would brace between the leaf spring mounts. Like an x between them. I run 4 leafs with poly bushings and it runs ok. I had a slight body roll with that setup so after talking to Bryant at Current Auto Performance in El Cajon, he reccommended a panhard behind the axle to keep the axle centered. Rear end is now firmly planted and i have tons of adjustability to keep it olanted no matter the track setup. But binding always happens. Sliders replacing the shackles may help but i decided to go 3 link and coilovers with a brand new frame and 12 point cage to see if i can improve any.

Thanks man. I have a full set of 1 ton sway bars, im ditching the leaf springs, and going with Trailing arms setups from a 67-72 c10 with custom panhard and a Ford 9". I also have a full cage being built in, so that will control alot. Should run pretty flat when complete. we will see. The Chassis isnt complete, as i deployed (Navy) everything is on pause right now.

I was looking into that at first also. Read through Ron Suttons threads a million times and decided on a 3 link. Much more articulation and adjustability.

https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/100779-HELP-how-do-I-set-my-3-link-bars/page2

While your out read up on some of his threads or shoot him an email. Im thinking if you are wanting to do some racing you might change your mind. I run with the SCCA racing in the CAM class at qualcomm. You should come check it out sometime. Its crazy fun and a lot of the guys would be happy to share some info and insight. Would be nice to see another truck out there to gauge my performance lol. Lots of camaros and mustangs. I will be down for a few month while i build my frame and cage and ATTEMPT to get my pig under 3300 pounds to be close to their weight.

Whos building your cage? I was going to have autopower do mine but i couldnt spend that much to make it that close so i just bought a jegs cage. Not bad for 350 shipped. I went a little smaller gauge with my frame since i will be running a 12 point cage. Hopefully the weight equals out

That was fun pulling the cab backwards up the driveway without dropping it.....now i just need to cut out the floor and firewall and make new mounts. My new mounts/ outer frame rails should weigh 25# but should take out 100# or more of metal. Plus the cage is supposed to be here today.

I would definitely love to get down there and turn some times. I wont be back home till later this year..
so hopefully plan to have the truck up and running this winter.
I'm not dead set on the truck arms yet. I still have time to do more research, and go from there. so we will see.
As for my cage, i bought a S&W race cars cage, and it didn't fit very close at all.. so we started building our own.
I had to step down to 1 1/2" bars, as I didn't have $300 for a new die for my buddies bender that i was borrowing.
The cage will be at least a 10 point, but with some street ability built into it.
I ended up plating my factory frame after i had it straightened. I wasn't setup to build a full frame correctly.
So i decided to due what i could with the stock frame and see how far i could push it. Ill definitely hit you up when i get back,
and see about getting some racing in.

Sounds good. I went back and forth with boxing the frame or just adding reinforcements. The kick in the nuts was my first time getting on the scales. A bunch of the guys from the CAM class were there getting weighed and were all right around 3100. I put my truck on the scales and i was 4175. So from then on i have been anal about the weight. I managed to cut off and shave out enough weight to get me down to 3700 but i know there is more there that i can get rid of. The factory 6" c channel frame rails are HEAVY. and are not solid at all. So i figured since the frame wasnt doing what i wanred anyways and i had to z the frame and c notch it just to get the height i wanted that i would build my own. I am not setup for frame building either, nor have i ever done this before. But i am making everything off my reference plane of the garage floor and building from there. Will it be perfect? Not hardly! But its mine and i will know i built the lightest strongest truck i could with basic tools. Right now i can lift my frame up by the front crossbar with the front crossmember and wheels and move it around the garage. Def lighter than the factory frame. I i got my 12 point "kit" from jegs yesterday and im not too impressed with it. It will serve as a good baseline but i know it could be better. I might get a main hoop bent from autopower and start with that. Havent decided yet. For the time being i am just cutting my floor out so i can plan how i will be mounting the cab to the outriggers.

Got a few hours this morning and set up the upper link frame mount. Im using the caprice upper link mounting points to make a mount. I wont have the full 6" offset i wanted to have for my 8% of my track width but it will be close at 5ish. Still needs two more tubes notched and the rear tabels welded on. Should be plenty strong and is being built with parts laying on the floor from the rest of the build.

Love the build.

Are you using flux core welding wire? If so, move over to a gas setup and your welds will look sooo much better without all the splatter.

Mtrhd329

Yup Flux core for now. I have the kit to convert to gas but dont wanna spend 100 on the bottle and gas. One day after i get it built i will get some gas. It would make for less splatter.

Not much to report. Been getting all of my tacks welded solid in the front end for the LCA mounts and crossmember mounts etc. I think i am almost ready to stab the motor. I MAY run the brake lines now before i stab the motor......or i may wait until i pull it hack out to weld in the motor mounts. Need to get the OLD frame out of my driveway soon. Maybe this weekend!

Got the motor pulled from the old frame and stuck into the new. Set the motor down in its new spot. Had to jack the cab up a couple feet to get it to clear the motors jew home but with a little cutting it is going to be awesome and LOW. my driveshaft should be maybe 2ft long. This is also goong to leave me no room for a gas pedal so i will have to move over the brake booster, steering column mount and make a new oedal mount. If im going that far i might cut the whole firewall and start over. More to follow aftwr i think on the next step. Heres pix.

Found that my new stainless headers that were for a 98-02 camaro will NOT FIT. Collectors were trying to poke out under the frame. Way to much of an angle. So back with my old headers and then try to fit the $20 ebay xpipe in there. I will be running the $10 speedway 3" bullet mufflers and the x pipe and hope im under 93db for the track. Got the trans mounted and some of the floor planned out. Ordered coilover springs finally so i can roll the truck around. Got the rear panhard mounted and the swat bar mocked up. Keep in mind, air can get trapped in hoses.
To me it looks like that hose elbow would sit above the top row of the radiator.
Honestly, i don't think the radiator needs to be mounted at that extreme angle.

Mtrhd329
07-07-2016, 02:47 PM
Understood. There is no function of the radiator that is making me mount it at this angle. I understand about the air bubbles, i will be adding a remote fill in the upper hose which will be my highest point and i will be extra attentive to the burping process.
The purpose of such an intense angle is for ducting the radiator. I am going to try a ducted setup which will force air in the grille opening and out the top of the hood. This will increase cooling and (my main hope) will add downforce to the front end byforcing all of that air over the hood. This will allow me to seal off the rest of the front end in hopes of the splitter i will be building to help the front end suck down to the ground.

That engine setback would put fear in any corvette owner. Hopefully its not too intrusive to the cabin, but at minimum I see the pedals need tending to. I would just mount the gas pedal to the left of the brake pedal and call it a day. Might help your autoxing to use the gas when your brain wants to brake :) I kid.

The weight distribution front to back has to be looking real good now. Keep up the good work, we miss you at the track.

Without the cage finished and no gas tank mounted its 60/40 front to rear. Be interesting to see what happens when its all daid and done and i quit moving stuff around. Pedals are being moved over to the left and SOMEHOW i have to cover this engine and make a floor. Ive been missing racing also. Bryant keeps trying to persuade me to come out even to watch but if i do that it counts as truck time and i could use that time to get this thing done. I may be complete enough for a test drive at the next event but no where near race ready. Ill be back soon. Hopefully all that im doing will have positive effect and i wont be chasing my tail haha

Loving the progress. On your rad, make sure you seal the front, so the air is forced through it. I'm just messing around with rad placement, angle, etc myself. I hoping to find some info on air flow through radiators and how angle and venting affects placement and how to better design the hood.

The only thing i did to the old frame was weld in a hitch i made. There was a ton of flex back there with only the factory rivets holding everything together.

On one frame i welded all the joints that were riveted together. I would say triangles are your friend. If you arent running a blazer tank get some tube or square stock and make an x between the leaf spring mount points. Then lake another x between forward leaf spring mounting points and as far forward as you can go.....like the trans crossmember. Triangle are stronger.

When i went to get more pipe today i saw some gussets while i was waiting in line and picked up a few. They are awesome. Love them and they should add a TON of strength. Gotta get some more and put em everywhere hahahaha. Did some talking to some people and decided to go to manual brakes and move my pedal over to the left. What kind of brake lines are those?

Mtrhd329

Thats just 3/16" brake line from the parts store. It bends like licorice. Had to cross lines since the master has rear port in front.

Just to note, you could have issues with bleeding out all the air with your lines higher than the MC ports. Typically you want them lower so no air gets trapped.

I would get some gas for your welder if your welds are breaking apart, much stronger plus they will look much better as well .

I only welded sides and put all the trucks weight on that joint. It has since been rewelded and fish plated and braced.

Build looks extreme bud! I admire your devotion to the project, and your time spent writing it all up for us! The crown Vic subframe is looking real tempting for my c1500. I need to look into that one a little more.
FWIW, some of your welds look cold, not enough penetration, especially on the frame. I'm guessing you have a welder like I do, the typical 115-145 amp mig. Shielding gas will absolutely help, and you should definitely get that bottle. Put off the other stuff you want to get until you get that. When you get the gas set up, use .035 wire and tips. Slow down your wire speed, and bump your amperage up. Your machine most likely has a terrible duty cycle like mine. Something crazy like 20% working time, and 80% resting time. This drives me crazy because I like to move quick. You can get good welds with a smaller machine, but you have to really let it rest, Leave the machine in so the fan runs. I'd guess thst I get about a min or two in my machine when cranked up to 135 amps, Then it needs to rest for 10 min. This is why I'm saving for a high amp tig.

Please don't take my second post here as me ripping on you, I'm not. I want to see you hauling around the track whooping arse, and go home safe at night. If that rear snaps on you while you're on a corner, you could flip.

I had people give me the same advice years ago, and I'm thankful they did! Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing this thing finished! I am curious as to how the manual brakes will work on the truck too. I'm up in the air on my truck brakes. Let us know how they compare to the booster system

Thanks for all that are watching this build and the positive feedback. It helps a lot when i just dont want to wrench some days.

Well after a 6 week work thing i had to do, i am back and hitting the truck hard.
I dropped my driveshaft off today to get shortened and new yolks to run 1350 u joints all around. Got a good deal at 260 but was not expecting that much. Well better do it right and do it once. Ill have that next week.
I kept looming at my trans crossmember and didnt like the 1" tubing as i felt it was small and i couldnt find a way to keep it and make it work so i cut it off. Went to my scrap ule and found a small section of pipe an old trans mount plate and some square tubing and made a new crossmember.

I feel this one is a lot stronger and i dont have to mess with my exhaust to get it to clear the crossmember now. Now that the xmbr was in place i started messing with the pile of 3" exhaust i had laying around. To see what routing would look like with parts on hand. After the x pipe i plan to run one or two of the bullet mufflers to keep my sound under the db limit. Heres a few pics of me playing around with exhaust.

Pulled the wiring harness from the truck and started to disassemble the circuits one by one so i can reroute it a little nicer. I want to make sure that once i cut the harness to install the connector everything is run in the right spot. Once i had every circuit in its own bundle, i started plugging in the connectors and running them one by one. In the past i went with a layer of electrical tape covered by convoluted tubing, followed by more tape. I decided on this time running some tech flex over each bundle with the cloth tape used on factory harnesses securing the ends. This accompanied by the mil spec connector should be a decent harness. Found a few cut wires so those will be repaired. Im hoping to get this wrapped up and hear this thing fire up soon. Still have to wire in my fuse block and make a switch panel. Heres a few pics

Did a bunch of little stuff today. Got headers on and starter installed. Ran my positive cables from alternator to starter and starter to cutoff switch. Made a cutoff switch label plate from scrap handicap sign. Welded xpipe and installed. Trimmed some more around the dash and the dash itself to see how that fit and where to put my dash bar.
Then i got the mail and all my weather pack connectors and harness tape came in. So i will be spending some late nights wiring this beast up over the next few days. Have to figure out how to wire everything in place and have the trans tunnel be removable also. Lots of connectors in store for me. Im goong to get some vodka and start drawing it out on paper.

Got my fuse block in wired it up and tried to fire up the truck and.....no dice. Crank and no fire. I completely redid the harness so i need to recheck all my connectiojs once again and try it once more.

Also i think the dash could use some paint. What do you guys think? I have gloss dark grey, metallic blue and flat black sitting around. Truck will be royal blue eventually.

Next up is to frame out the firewall so the aluminum skin has something to attach to. Then i can build the floors. Im using 3/4" square tubing to frame everything out with .032 aluminum sheet for firewall and floor. SCCA minimum and VERY light. Bracing will be key for this project.

Worked on the exhaust a little bit. I know this truck wil be crazy hot as my floor pans and firewall will be the thinnest allowable by the rules. So i wrapped the pipes with header wrap to try and cut down on some heat. I will save for getting my headers ceramic coated at a later date. I can hold my hand on the pipe while its idling and its barely warm. Awesome stuff.

Where my 3rd link meets the frame there was not much in reinforcement. The two plate sit in a groove in a crossmember between frame rails. I added a piece of 2x3 standing on its end between the plates and i feel this will help a ton once i tie that into the cage. Since my misalignment spacers are 2" the metal slid right in there.

Didnt take a picture with it in. Got done and cleaned up and forgot. I also made my radiator mounts so i can now start filling my fluids and hopefully this week pull this truck put of the garage and turn it around so i can start fabbing the front sheetmetal. Also good time for some pictures.

I don't think the steam line into the thermostat housing is going to work. You can go into the water pump on the side closest to the thermostat, or you can T off that heater hose.

Why wont it work? Its in the same body of water as it would be in the top of the radiator. Bubbles go in and rise to my fill point in the upper hose.

Played around with where i want the rear fender to sit. Im thinking i will level it with the bottom of the cab? I keep thinking i need to cut it in half and take out some of the length of the fender so there isnt so much gap around the tire. 8" looks to be the amount i would need to cut. Still thinking about that one.

On the cab there is a body line right below where the door handle would be. I was kinda using this as a reference for the cab. On the fender the top is kinda flat, and it steps out at a 45, and then another 45 a few inches later to be vertical. I have where i think it looks ok height wise....mbut i keep looking at the fender lines and the cab line and wondering if i will wish i had lined those up later.

Hevent been updating here lately. Got a lot of stuff done. Still have a long way to go.
Got a trans tunnel fabbed up and a plate to mount the quicksilver shifter and 4th gen fbody e brake handle. I am going to cover it up with a 4th gen fbody center console.

Got a little bit of rust repair done on passenger fender and cut the wheel openings down some so the fit around the tire better. The outer lip of the tire was even with the fender so flares were ordered and the fender was trimmed out to gain clearance. Heres a shot with the flares clekod in place. Still need to patch one more spot and shave the marker.
https://postimg.org/image/d0oh1cp8l/

Bought a small bead roller and made a vise mounted sheet metal brake and decided to give a shot at making my floors from .032 aluminum. Came out ok i think. Pretty strong and together weigh about a pound. Still need a few more pieces to finish it off but im out of the steel i was using for the support. Need to make some seat risers next to get the seats off the floor a bit.

https://postimg.org/image/ybdy2ku11/

Heres a shot of the truck head on with the pass side ducting mostly finished. Needs a few more screws and some ducting tape to seal it all up. All ducting was made from street signs and are attached very solidly

Coilovers were rubbing the caliper bolts so i drilled new holes and moved the inboard slightly. It was suggested i pull the axles and swap the backing plates to put calipers on the other side. Keeping that in mind in vase this doesnt work.

A shot of tue new geometry. Swapped in my 200# spring while i was in there.

Next up is fixing a PCM issue i have been having. I fried one PCM. bought a replacement read it with hp tuners and then it corrupted somehow. 2nd Pcm now is toast. Waiting on funds to post so i can license PCM 3 next week and hopefully get this thing running. Still havemt heard my new BLACK WIDOW mufflers. I owe them a video .

I need to pull this pig put of the driveway under its own power so i can finally get working on the drivers side. I have been neglecting that side because its close to the garage wall and a pain to work on.

Got some more little things knocked out this week and started driving the truck. Overall i am very happy with my suspension setup. Very tight and comfortable to ride. The 3 link rear is night and day over my leafs i had before and i am happy with the crown vic front clip and rack and pinion. I need to remove some camber but thats an easy fix. I am REALLY leaning toward 315s all the way around but that will have to wait until later.

Took the truck over to CURRENT AUTO PERFORMANCE to get scaled. Hung out for a while and saw some of the awesome builds the have going on over there daily. Great shop and great people. Got the truck on scales and was blown away at where i am at

3035 overall with 55% front 45% rear. I plan to add some more cage reinforcements and bed pieces in the rear which should add some weight and bring the bias closer to equal. Then i will start reproducing parts in the from out of fiberglass to shed some weigh up front. Still pretty good for starting out at 4200 and dropping to 3700 before the frame build. New frame with custom suspension and adding a full cage dropped me 700#. I now dont have any excuse for camaros beating me. We are close in power weight and design. This should get interesting. The only seperating factor will be giys like tom and danny running 315s. I guess this will show how much effect larger tires have.

Make a tailgate. Make some sort of sound reduction devices. Fix my power steering leak. And i think thats it for now. Just ran out of welding wire so i need more to finish a few other random things like mount seat belts and finish some tabs. Hooefully i will ha e most everyrging done by next weekend. I am doubtfull of the hood being done as my fiberglass wont be here until the 24th. That gives me a week to mold a hood from my old one. No pressure. Will probably just be a skin for CAM challenge and then i can finish it up after.

Sorry for the phone typing errors. Apparently i have big fat fingers and phones are being built without the big fat finger function on these little keyboards.

Today i got one camber bolt installed and sitting at -2.3* camber. The other.....well that ******* is on there. Impact gun, 4ft cheater bar and still nothing. Fixed my power steering leak. Cant wait to see how the rack feels with fluid in it.

Got the tonneau cover cut down and mounted. Need all the downforce i can get back there. Drove to the big 3 show this weekend and every time i applied more than half throttle i spun the rear like nothing. I did some calculations and i need to add more anti squat. Project for monday. Today with some help i found that my PS pump was leaking between the pump and reservoir. 12 dollar seal kit and 30 minutes and i had it resealed and no more leak. Got my brakes bled since i had help today and got a bunch of air out of the lines but the pedal still feels squishy for my tastes. Im thinking i might need a 1" bore master cylinder to upgrade from the 15/16" one i have now. Hopefully that helps.

O2 sensor heater fault popped up today randomly so truck runs like poo again. Probably melted a wire. Need to find that tomorrpw also. It is definately crunch time for CAM challenge on friday. Hopefully i can convince work that racing is what i shoukd be doing friday so i can get some tuning laps in to dial in my 3 link bars and panhard settings. More tomorrow.

138054138055138056

My first run at test n tune i had a passenger and set out to see what the truck gad in her. Tan through the slalom kinda loose and came to the end and went to hit the brakes for a sharp 90 and the pedal went to the floor and i had to spin the truck at 50 mph to scrub the speed. Limped off the course and flintstone stopped in the pits. The bolt that held the brake pedal to the pushrod lost its nut and came out. After my passenger stopped puking i ran to lowes and got new hardware to include a nylok nut. Came back to run again and my overflow bottle was dripping so i got flagged from running. Turns out my fans werent getting turned in to cool the motor and i was overheating. Rewired my relays and i was back up but test n tune was closed. Drove gome for the night and got a p1860 code for the tcc the motor was surging badly and wpuld not hold idle when coming to a stop and would die.

Saturday. I got to the track early and tuned my tcc out to get rid of the codes and started running. The truck was solid in the front end and i could not get any push like i was plagued with all last year. The fron suspension was solid. However after a few cones in the slalom the ass end woyld just come around and spin me out. This led to a day of spinning and not being able to really get into the gas at all. Disconnected the rear bar and lowered the panhard to attempt to get grip back to no avail. Coolant fans were too close to the radiator and were rubbing.

Sunday. Ran my numbers for my rear suspension and i was running 176% AS and needed a top link change. Moved the bar down to attempt to correct it. This was the wrong way. While waiting and watching i dove in ron suttons threads on rear suspension and discovered my lower bars were angled and introducing rear steer and coupled with my high AS woyld not let me get any rear grip.

Overall i had a blast visiting with freinds and talking about race cars all weekend was awesome. The CAM culture is like none other and i wouldnt hang out anywhere else. Our next event is in two weeks so a few bar changes and some new 315s for the rear and i will see what she has with consistent grip. Shakedown almost complete. The truck scares me with its acceleration amd balance in the corners i cant wait to see what its capable of.

Looked Awesome out there Bryan! The amount of stiffness you have in that truck has really transformed the way it looks going around corners. I'm no Engineer but I would think a bit more weight in the back would benefit in two ways. 1. During acceleration some weight transfer could occur onto the rear tires. 2. Under cornering weight could be transferred to the outside rear, giving some "natural" stick. Great to see someone building something truly outside the box, love having this racing CAM in our region.

Tom- i agree. I am adding weight slowly back there. Gotta pull weight outta the front also though.

Dr g- yup thats qualcomn west lot. I like this side due to the elevatuon changes and potential for longer straifht aways.

R beast- im sure the shorter wheel base amplified the effect of rear steer but i had my suspension set up horribly due to my numbers being off. Should be loads better now.

Picked up some Koni ps8 shocks today. They came with eibach springs in the 250 variety. Extra 50# stiffness should work well when i put the spoiler on.138121

I went to the BMW Club auto-x at Qualcomm yesterday. On the huge West Lot.

I encourage you to try them out some time, they set up very fast and flowing courses. They allow non-BMW's (X class). Yesterday there were a few Miata's, a few new Mustangs, and older 5.0 Mustang which was pretty modified, a few Corvettes, some Porsches, and even a small Formula car of some type. You can pre-register online to guarantee your spot.

They have another event coming up in April on the SE lot. They promised the track would be very good.

Here's a clip of one of my runs yesterday. Not in my truck, just our daily driver. But concentrate on the course (not me missing my apexes!). I hit third gear on the back straight, as did a lot of others. There was only one hairpin on the entire course. A lot of fun.

Lots of changes since me last update. I finished the rear spoiler. Made a few changes to my rear geometry to make my number a little better. I cut almost 3 inches out of my upper link to get the numbers in check. My tire temps from the last event told me that i had to much negative camber at -3* so i took it back some to -2* and we wikl see how that does on sunday.

Installed a fire extinguisher just to be safe. Rewired my fans so they will work correctly.

Got tired of my.camaro gauges being mostly accurate and intermittent at best. Started gathering some gauges here and there and i am starting to make a panel for them now.

Oh ya and i got some 315s for the rear for better grip.

Update!!

Well work has been ridiculous. I have been working overnight every four days and have been working 18 hour days on top of that. Finally got two days off in a row that landed on a weekend and got some work done on the truck.

Since i last posted i pulled the trigger on pulling the 4l80e and selling it to fund a t56 swap. I could never get the auto transmissions to shift when i wanted or pull like i wanted. I always felt like i was waiting on the gears to catch up to me. Could be my setup. Could be me. But i have wanted a manual in this truck since i first got it in high school so i figured why not.

Sold my 4l80e and fpund a t56 on craigslist the same day. Go figure the odds. Drove to LA and sold one and picked up the other. A buddy donated a centerforce clutch to the project and i bought some ARP fasteners and put it all in. Drive shaft ended yp being perfect length i just had to swap yokes. Trans mount was redone to clear exhaust better and be more sturdy. Clutch master bolted right up no issues. Took me forever to bleed the clutch but i habe rock hard pedal now and i must say it is a whole new truck now. I even had my son under the truck helping me line everything up. Not bad for a minecraft addicted 7yo.

My buddy and i donned our helmets and took it around the block. Lots of wierd looks from people seeing a racy looking truck and two guys in helmets driving around. But its in and drives awesome. Just waiting on my shifter now and i can try and button up my console. I must say having my engine set back almost a foot makes for an interesting shifter location.145692145691

Finally got around to cutting out the factory crossmember and the hacked up top link mount i made in a hurry.

I used 2x4 .120 wall for each side of the crossmember with a piece of 1x4 .120 wall over the top. This was welded to the stubs of the factory crossmember which were also welded to the frame. I then cut some 2x4 to slide over the crossmember to make the top link. Thus allowed me to not only weld arpund the base of the 2x4 to thw crossmember but also added a piece over the back of it for a little added strength. Came out ok and should allow for a lot more strength than i had in there.

Mounted a 1" master from a 6cyl mustang. Upgrade from the 15/16 master i had before. Im hoping for a better pedal feel. Bled the brakes and adjusted my push rod. Need to bleed once more then test out the brakes.

Spent some time and started making my belly pan pieces out of some aluminum i had left over.

Played around with the dimple die and popped some holes in the door. And cut out the piece under the door panel. Net savings of 10#. Every little bit helps.

Haven't heard anything back from the guy above who was going to go see it this weekend. Work and tornados have prevented me from getting back to Cali so far this year.
