Hey everyone- You've heard of our new ExtReme C10 full frames as seen in our '67 C10 shop truck. Without major tuning it handled so well it took 1st place trophies it's first time on the track. Click here to see it... (http://www.speedtechperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=422/category_id=7/mode=prod/prd422.htm)
Then came our ExtReme subframes for Camaros and Novas which have been flying out of the warehouse and will soon be popping up at events. Click here to check them out! (http://www.speedtechperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=177/mode=cat/cat177.htm)
Now that same awesome totally new suspension is underway for '64-72 A body cars!
Our first test car for the '68-72 A bodies is this beautiful '69 GTO project brought up by Tony from Las Vegas. Starting with a shell in great shape, we'll be dropping the GM chassis out and replacing it with our new ExtReme full chassis, including the same geometry/ front suspension as the C10 and the subframes, and out back will be our famous Torque Arm!
Some may ask why not leave well enough alone. Well, we're not after "well enough" in our suspension design, we want to see our customers win races rather than just participate. We all know that the triangulated 4 link with a few tweaks does ok in handling, but it still has issues with bind and potential for wheel hop. The Torque Arm on the other hand allows for less bind in a greater amount of articulation, and won't disrupt handling by maxing out. It also allows adjustable ride height, roll center, pinion angle, instant center, and wheelbase.
Here's my Photoshop rendering to get the ball rolling...

Not only will this GTO have a killer suspension, the drivetrain is in normal Speedtech fashion, plenty of power. Tony brought up this stroked LS2 packing boost by way of a Whipple supercharger going through Trick Flow heads. Woohoo, GT-go!

Looking forward to this.
What size tire do you think you can get on an A-body with your frame?
Also, what sort of anti-squat properties does the rear suspension have? I realize that optimized handling is the point, but I do like going drag racing on occasion.

Hi Andrew,
The chassis, suspension & frame are all designed to be optimum with a 315/30/18 front tire. While you can run larger in the rear, for handling purposes, I suggest the same 315/30/18 in the rear too. The eXtreme full chassis for the A-Body has all the same benefits as the F-Body clip we've been discussing. The dimensions are slightly different to achieve that optimization for the A-Body, so the result is the same.
As far as the Speedtech Torque Arm set-up in the full chassis, it will have 60% anti-squat.

Thanks for the info Ron. I like the idea of running a square set-up for tires, maybe 305/30-19s all the way around like the new Z28...

Great stuff.
By the way, where did you get those valve covers?
Ben@SpeedTech
02-23-2016, 07:09 AM
Thanks for the compliments everyone. We wish we could claim responsibility for the car itself, it really is pretty. At least we can be proud of the beauty of what will be underneath.
The valve covers came with the engine so we don't have any info on them at this point.
So far the plan is this car will have 19s in the front but the customer hasn't decided whether to do 19s or 20s out back. We'll keep everyone posted as things unfold.
Thanks for chiming in Ron!

He should skip the 20's in back.

I'm a more practical kind of guy, meaning cars were created to be beat on on a track, so I'm not into bling bling and big wheels, fat 18s and sticky tires suit me fine. But with the right stance I think this body style can get away with 20's out back and look good. If it's close to the rendering we nailed it and it'll be pretty wicked.
Another GTO on 20s...

Thanks for asking. We had the prototype frame in the car but felt we needed to make some minor final rear frame rail fitment adjustments to make it perfect. At this point are waiting for the updated plates from the laser cutter so we can assemble it again and anticipate this will be our last revision before production. We're estimating about 2 weeks to have it on the ground again. Once we know it fits the way we want I'll start posting pics, so thanks again for the interest and hang tight, more coming soon.

Out with the old. You can see what a factory frame minus springs looks like. That's not far off from the ride height potential the ExtReme frame has.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/08/6920GTO20Silver20007_zpsxdiq5s84-1.jpg
To prepare to swallow 345s out back a mintub was in order. Also note the contoured rear sheet metal removed and the insert that we provide to better conform to the shape of the new frame rails and suspension.

Because this chassis has such a low ride height we have created and added to our production lineup a high clearance complete trans tunnel insert. It comes in three main pieces that are easily fitted and welded into the floor.

Will raising the tunnel in the rear neccesitate modifications to a stock seat bottom?
Andrew
Ben@SpeedTech
08-30-2016, 11:49 AM
The stock floor is fairly low back there, so at this point our measurements say yes. You should be able to modify the center inner seat support to clear the tunnel and maintain the factory bench rear seat. We're not quite to that point in the build yet but so far that's what we're seeing. Note that our chassis is designed to maximize suspension travel range even at this low ride height. This necessitates the taller tunnel to clear the driveline at full suspension compression. The front will need to be converted to bucket seats if it has not been already, but we suspect a front bench seat pro touring car will be somewhat rare anyway.

The progress looks great! I've been doing some research for my '69 Chevelle and highly considering one of your frames, so i would love to see the results of this GTO in its final stance when you are complete on the frame swap. The cost of keeping the stock frame and adding the bolt-on parts with frame mods isn't much cheaper than this complete frame, so it is very enticing...

We like to use black epoxy primer to seal everything first, including the interior areas. Then in the exposed areas and the trunk we use spray on box liner as a second application. It's super durable, has a nice color and sheen to it, and along with the texture gives a nice contrast to the shiny frame and suspension parts. We're like form and function here.

While the paint and body crew were working on their handiwork the mechanical crew mocked up the engine and fitted our 1st set of production A body headers. For each of our applications we initially design and build the headers in house, considering both component and ground clearance specifically at a low ride height, and then send out that design for production models. In this case Ultimate Headers is building our ExtReme headers exclusively for us using their high quality materials and production processes. The end result is a super nice header that fits perfectly in our applications.
The engine here is LS3 based however everything internally has been upgraded. This motor was previously run by the owner in a late model Camaro which dipped into the 10's in the 1/4. Pulled out and freshened up for the GTO, the lighter weight A body should see a further drop in track times. He also shared with us it made a great around town cruiser too. This will be the ultimate GTO when it's back on the streets, right?

Next objective was installing the frame into the car and having a good last look at clearance and suspension geometry at ride height. For this we installed 315 30 18s on the front and 335s out back. Everything is looking perfect and working out just as we anticipated. I know some of you will have questions about clearance and all, hopefully I have everything covered in the pics. If not let me know and maybe I can shoot something specific for you.

And with the front clip and doors on. The 5th photo down from a ground up view the truck's tire makes it look there's something hanging down under the cross member that goes under the engine. There's actually a good deal of clearance there, even at this low ride height. Our goal was to have incredible geometry with plenty of suspension travel yet not have to worry about bottoming out at all.

Thanks guys!
There are a lot of great products out there and in trying a few we lean towards Defender Pro. It sticks well (prep is still important), is durable, has a bit of sound deadening quality and lays down nice. It' doesn't do much for blocking heat so we still use Dynomat inside as well.

Moving forward with the engine install, lots to do here. This shows the positioning pretty well in the ExtReme chassis. We make custom air intakes for each car, that way we can control exactly where and how we place the air filter. Note we had to machine the "whipple" logo off the supercharger for hood clearance. With some slight mods to the underside of the hood support this all fits under a stock hood!

Off to the side will be a custom air box that opens up to the grill area for cool fresh air. Up front we have a radiator, A/C condenser, intercooler, and uber heavy duty oil, power steering and trans coolers. Lots of plumbing on deck! Custom radiator support and brackets will be powdercoated silver to match the engine bay.

The GTO's brakes were feeling a little lonely, luckily the new wheels and tires finally showed up. Check out the impact that brushed nickel has, man that's a cool look! This car sports 295-30-19s up front and 345-30-20s out back.

138546Always great to see a GTO being built. This is my 1970 Goat firewall after waking it up from winter... I think I went a little more extreme with mine though :) I kind of have a LS3 Camaro, Z06 under mine, with a 2004 body pan transplanted with interior... oh and a 3 link rear end from a Mustang GT500 :)

A couple more pics of the cool, ...er, cooling parts. Dual fans, radiator, condenser, intercooler, then fluid coolers. Jeremy's still working on the plumbing and wiring so that'll all be routed and tucked in there nicely when he's done.

Next up was the roll bar. Not intended to be NHRA legal, our customer wanted a 4 pt bar with rear seat access. Jeremy custom bent this one to be practical and tucked in there nice and neat.

Are those the SpeedTech LS conversion headers?
Also, do you guys have an approximate curb weight of a complete A-Body with the Extreme Chassis?
Thanks,

Thanks Dan and Berd!
Mike- Yes, they are Speedtech headers. The frame rails are fairly tight on the ExtReme frames to get that 30 degree steering angle goal with tucking 315 tires so we developed a header that we knew would fit well and give great ground clearance too. We have not tested any other brands to see if something else would fit. I asked Jeremy if he could weigh it when he gets it all buttoned up. This car has a blower, a hefty intake with intercooler, coolant tanks, a roll cage, etc, so he said to expect it to be a little heavier than a more simple build.

More pics of chassis and exhaust detail, front suspension here. Note things like the tie down hooks for trailering and splined sway bars are standard on ExtReme frames. This customer chose to run 295-30-19s up front, although the suspension is designed to accept 315s. Everything about this frame is designed to be the missing link between street cruiser and race track thrasher. One thing I think is cool is the inclination angle on the front shocks is more effective allowing for a lighter rate spring to achieve heavier rate handling characteristics. Headers are designed to play nice with this super low stance. The spindle was redesigned to have even better geometry for even better handling than our current AFX spindle. Any questions or comments feel free to post 'em up!

Mid section here. As mentioned this car has 3" exhaust that tucks nicely parallel to the Torque Arm. We considered a triangulated 4 link for the A body cars when this chassis was in development mostly because that's what everyone was used to. That idea quickly got axed to run our Torque Arm instead, there's so many advantages to this system it just didn't make sense to run a 4 link. If you've never experienced how smooth and predictable our torque arm is, next time you're at an event ask a Speedtech equipped car's owner for a ride along.

Have you guys considered a TQ arm and watts package for A body guys running stock frames? Based on conversations I've had with other A body guys, I think it would be a big hit. Chassisworks has started making one now

Rear suspension. One of the biggest challenges with any lowered Pro Touring car is exhaust clearance, some rear suspensions make it more difficult than others. Our Torque Arm with it's panhard bar is tight too, but still allows ample room for a 3" system. We don't have a specific exhaust kit available, we usually buy a SW mandrel bent stainless universal builder kit and custom fit it to the car. Dutchman preps our 9" axles including welding on all Torque Arm brackets.
Unique to Speedtech are our 2-peice "Articulink" lower trailing arms that use components machined from billet steel to allow the arms to rotate with suspension articulation. This really makes for smooth transitions as you throw the car back and forth in the curves and over bumps in the road. Note that the arms have multiple mount position options as do the shocks so that you can maximize performance with your desired ride height. That billet lower shock mount can be flipped for a 1 1/2" difference in ride height without adjusting the shock at all. This suspension works so well a rear sway bar isn't typically necessary unless you're running a LARGE front sway bar for racing and the rear bar is needed to balance and reduce understeer. We like to use Rick's Tanks for our builds, they come with the extra clearance of notched corners and pretty much any fuel pump requirement provisions.

Nick- Good question. You never know what the future holds, ;). It's nice to know that folks are starting to get on board with the Torque Arm, something we've been promoting on Leaf Spring cars since the beginning. My car is a 4 link G body and I was excited about the huge difference I felt on the autoX by simply swapping from another brand solid rear control arms to the Speedtech Articulink arms. Now after having driven a few of these Torque Arm equipped cars and feeling how they're even smoother and predictable than what I have, I wish G body Torque Arms were on the to do list too!
For now, we're more focused on the total transformation of having superior front and rear matched suspension packages through this complete redesign of theory and geometry in the ExtReme products. We recently released the Tri 5 ExtReme chassis and look forward to some classic shoe boxes soon to be kicking some Camaro booty. We have several ExtReme cars in the line up for R&D, the earlier Chevelle/ A body like yours is in development as we speak. We're also working 50's Chevy and Ford Trucks right now and then 3rd Gen Camaros. Possibly doing a square body Chevy truck frame and Impalas are bringing up the rear of the list. We'd rather get it right the first time and give you guys the best bang for the buck so it takes a while to get these perfected and on the market for each application.
We've talked in design meetings about doing some other conversion ideas for factory frames, but for now they may have to wait till after the ExtReme product line is available for most applications.
Killer work ! Badass... Just awesome !
I just love it...
(think I said it already)

The frame rail near the front tire has about 4.5" of clearance. The front fender roughly 6.5", rear frame rail roughly 5.5" and the rear rocker in front of the rear tire roughly 7.5". Lowest point on the exhaust is the collectors at 3.5".

There is still some work to be done, including the hood tach which is off getting re-faced to match the interior gauges and some of the interior work which will get done at the upholstery shop down in Vegas.
