Hello,

I'm sorry if this is a repetitive question but I can't seem to find the answer and I am pretty ignorant when it comes to trying to determine offset.

I have a 68 Camaro with OE fenders that I plan to have widened. The guy that widens them told me to get my wheels and he will widen them to fit. I want to run an 11" wheel with a 315 tire. I have a Heidts subframe. I assume the backspace would be the same as the 8" wheel that I have now but I need help with the offset.

Can someone please suggest an offset that I will need to make this work? The wheels that I want to run are the Forgestar F14 18x11.

Thanks
Brian

Let's take a quick look at how far out your wheels will be pushed from the hub - "front spacing".

Your current 8" wide wheel likely has 4.5 to 4.75" of backspacing. That same backspace would equate to 7.5" or 7.25" of front spacing with an 11" wide wheel. I know you are planning to widen the fenders, but that is pushed out pretty far.

Using the Ridetech Tru-Turn allows for 5.75" of backspacing with a 10" wide wheel. That equates to 5.25" of front spacing, which still requires some light modifications to the wheel wells. You'll be pushing your wheels out at least 2" more than that.

I don't see why you couldn't get it to bolt up if you could get the Forgestars with that low of backspacing, and had the fenders widened over 2". But, you would still be putting a ton of stress on your bearings, and might not have the best turning characteristics (Ackerman angle?) with the wheels pushed out that far. Hopefully others will have a more technical explaination of what happens with the wheels pushed out so far.

It's unfortunate that you can't use the Tru-Turn with the rack and pinion on the Heidits subframe to gain some backspacing and lessen the amount you have to flare. If you could run the 5.75" backspacing, then your front spacing would be 6.25". Not perfect and still a very negative offset/backspacing, but better than being well over 7" pushed outboard.

You might check out this tread where they fitted 11" wheels on the one lap Camaro.
