View Full Version : Oversized wheel legislation, HOAX!

I have read the article about supposed pending legislation which would apparently outlaw the use of oversized wheels and after some due diligence I have come to the conclusion that this article is a HOAX.

http://www.racefactor.org/uncategori...-set-in-motion (http://www.racefactor.org/uncategorized/pending-congress-bill-to-make-over-sized-rims-illegal-is-set-in-motion)

The suspicious thing about this article is that it does not cite any author of a bill or provide any bill number. In fact it does not provide any specific verifiable information of any kind. Typically a bill will be introduced by one or more members of Congress and any reference to said bill will contain the bill number and the name of the congressman who introduced it.

I have been unable to find any such bill existing on any reference list of bills pending before congress. In addition, SEMA Action Network lists no reference to any such bill on their web site and I am certain that SEMA would be all over a bill of this nature in the same way the NRA is all over gun legislation and stink is on a skunk.

After spending the better part of a day searching and finding no reference to this pending legislation anywhere other than the original story on racefactor.org I am convinced this story is a HOAX. If anyone has any verifiable information to indicate otherwise please share it with us.

However, it does make for an interesting topic of discussion.

It may sound bad but I'd almost support this bill under certain circumstances.... Nothing screams safety like a 85 caprice on 30's

But where is the line drawn? I'll support the Caprice on 30's if it keeps the Feds off our backs. Suddenly will they declare anything larger than OEM equipped as illegal? So if I'm building my 58 Edsel, is anything larger than 14" illegal? Would the 18's I have for my 71 Firebird be illegal? Government needs to stay out of our cars, period.

well, I have heard elsewhere about this rule being implemented, and I don't know much about it here in the states, however, they do have this law in Australia and they set it so you cannot increase your overall wheel diameter by something like 30mm(1 1/4 inch). so that is tire included, and again it is to limit fools using 30's and making their car unsafe, or more importantly, affecting their speedometer..

keep in mind the popo don't have a book of OEM wheel sizes.
the people who it really affects are owners of trucks and 4x4s... so I don't see it happening in america, unless they really label who it affects... so again, I don't see it happening

Tire diameter would work for the P-T folks, but it wouldn't work for my K5 Jimmy on 35's, as you'd mentioned. I'm not the only one, especially in AZ, so I don't see this happening. There would be a lot of vehicles suddenly declared illegal with the swipe of a pen.

Personally I think the line should be drawn for cars where the grille is sitting at or above the windshield of most other cars on the road. I'd hate to be the guy who gets hit by a lifted truck with a massive brush guard on the front...

I think a law such as this one should be primarily aimed at those who are making their vehicles more dangerous on the roads, and I don't think 18" wheels instead of 15" wheels falls in that category.

And we're supposed to let the Federal Government make that call?

I'd rather they stay out of modifications 100% than have them determine what any of us can do. And this definitely includes my K5 Jimmy on 35's, which is also lifted 6". Lifted trucks have been around longer than P-T cars, it would be quite unfair to say "my modifications are okay, but I don't like that guy's lifted truck".
