4 Speed or 5 Speed Camaro

I need help chosing a pretty reasonably priced trans for my 76 camaro. It needs to hold 400hp. Need help trying to find the best. I would prefer a 5 speed but will take a 4. Also what would I have to change from a th350 to a manual. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Personally I would not even consider a 4 speed if I was you. The benefits and increase in all around drivability make a 5 speed a MUCH better choice. In addition at 400 HP you should have many choices available.

What is your budget? What trans is in the car now?

I would consider installing a 4 speed if on a low budget and considering how many people are looking to ditch them for a 5/6 speed. A stock Super T10 with a factory Hurst Competition shifter is a great setup. Could even throw a shifter on it from Long. There are some pretty serious looking aftermarket 4 speeds out there that are extremely light weight.

Personally, I think the question you should be thinking about is a 5 speed vs a 6 speed. To go from your existing TH350 to a manual you will need to start under the dash and buy everything from the pedal assembly down. If you are on a tight budget 4 speeds are cheap since everyone, including myself, is pulling them out and replacing them with over drive transmissions. I personally prefer a mechanical Z-bar clutch linkage over a hydraulic setup. But you do need to decide on the transmission before you buy a bellhousing because depending on the transmission it may require a different style bellhousing.

However, if you decide on a 4 speed I can make you a good deal on a nice freshly rebuilt ST10 with Hurst shifter, flywheel, Lakewood bellhousing and driveshaft I removed from my SBC 68 Camaro when I installed my T56 Magnum.
